Applications of digital subtraction angiography in the management of penetrating injuries of the maxillofacial region: A case report.

This report presents a clinical case of trauma due to assault with a knife, and describes the importance of using the correct imaging modality in cases of facial penetrating trauma involving the superficial and deep anatomical planes. Penetrating wounds in the maxillofacial region are rare and poorly reported, but can result in serious complications that are difficult to resolve and may compromise the patient's quality of life, especially when large blood vessels or other vital structures are involved. Thus, it is essential to determine the extent of the affected blood vessels and the proximit

Midline Submental Orotracheal Intubation in Maxillofacial Injuries: A Substitute to Tracheostomy Where Postoperative Mechanical Ventilation is not Required.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial fractures present unique airway problems to the anaesthesiologist. Nasotracheal intubation is contraindicated due to associated Lefort I, II or III fractures. The requirement for intraoperative maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) to re-establish dental occlusion in such cases precludes orotracheal intubation. Tracheostomy has a high complication rate and in many patients, an alternative to the oral airway is not required beyond the perioperative period. Hernandez1 in 1986 first described "The submental route for endotracheal intubation". Later some workers faced difficul

Injury Patterns in Soccer-Induced Maxillofacial Fractures and Ocular Trauma: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial fractures and ocular trauma are significant injuries in soccer, with potential functional, aesthetic, and visual consequences if unrecognized. Few reviews have specifically examined both injury patterns in this sport. The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize the current literature to identify injury patterns associated with maxillofacial fractures and ocular trauma in soccer, thereby aiding clinicians in timely diagnosis and management. Given the heterogeneity and limited quality of the available evidence, this review also highlights areas where further r

Epidemiology of maxillofacial injury among adults in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Injuries remain one of the leading causes of death globally. These disproportionately affect young adults and are particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Maxillofacial injuries (MI) pose significant challenges to public health systems. However, much remains unknown regarding the epidemiology and extent of the financial burden in resource-limited areas, such as SSA, further necessitating more research and support. This scoping review aims to investigate the mechanism, distribution, and financial impact of MI in adults aged ≥ 18 years in SSA. MAIN BODY: The scoping revie

Multi-disciplinary surgical management of ocular and maxillofacial ballistic injury: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Injury to the maxillofacial region is of great importance due to the highly sensitive area, and the vital structures it carries. Special surgical wounding techniques must be used due to the significant tissue destruction. We report a unique case of a ballistic blast injury in a pregnant woman in a civilian setting. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old pregnant female, in the third trimester, presented at our hospital after ballistic ocular and maxillofacial injuries. Due to the complex nature of her injury, a multi-disciplinary team consisting of otolaryngologists, ne

Role of Transarterial Embolization in the Treatment of Life-Threatening Hemorrhage in Patients With Maxillofacial Injury.

Life-threatening hemorrhage following maxillofacial injury (MFI) is rare but can be fatal. Conventional measures for hemostasis including nasal packing, balloon tamponade, and surgical ligation of bleeding points may not be effective or efficient in patients at risk of hypovolemic shock. Advantages of transarterial embolization (TAE) include rapid identification of the bleeding focus and its access, direct obstruction of the culprit vessels, ability to control multiple bleeding sites, and no requirement of general anesthesia. The internal maxillary artery is the most frequently targeted vessel
