Short arm splints for wrist stabilization: A mechanical material test and cadaveric radiography study.

PURPOSE: Documentation of the wrist stabilizing effect and mechanical properties of common splinting materials is warranted to support evidence-based condition-specific recommendations for wrist immobilization. The objectives of this study were to assess the wrist stabilizing properties of volar and dorsal short-arm splints made of four different materials and evaluate the mechanical properties of the splinting materials. METHODS: Dorsal and volar short arm splints made of plaster of Paris (PoP) (eight layers), Woodcast (2 mm, rigid vented), X-lite (classic, two layers) or a 3D-printed materi

Fatigue-driven compliance increase and collagen unravelling in mechanically tested anterior cruciate ligament.

Approximately 300,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears occur annually in the United States, half of which lead to the onset of knee osteoarthritis within 10 years of injury. Repetitive loading is known to result in fatigue damage of both ligament and tendon in the form of collagen unravelling, which can lead to structural failure. However, the relationship between tissue's structural, compositional, and mechanical changes are poorly understood. Herein we show that repetitive submaximal loading of cadaver knees causes an increase in co-localised induction of collagen unravelling and tissu

Assessment of Sensory Thresholds in Dogs using Mechanical and Hot Thermal Quantitative Sensory Testing.

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is used to evaluate the function of the somatosensory system in dogs by assessing the response to applied mechanical and thermal stimuli. QST is used to determine normal dogs' sensory thresholds and evaluate alterations in peripheral and central sensory pathways caused by various disease states, including osteoarthritis, spinal cord injury, and cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Mechanical sensory thresholds are measured by electronic von Frey anesthesiometers and pressure algometers. They are determined as the force at which the dog exhibits a response indic

Ex-vivo Mechanical Testing of Novel Laryngeal Clamps Used for Laryngeal Advancement Constructs.

Rostral laryngeal advancement, also known as laryngeal tie-forward, is used to treat horses for intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate and has a morbidity rate of about 6%. We hypothesized that a novel laryngeal clamp would prevent morbidity associated with the sutures tearing through the thyroid cartilage. Larynges (n = 35 horses) were used for ex vivo testing. For uniaxial testing, 15 equine larynges were tested in one of three laryngeal tie-forward constructs [standard laryngeal tie-forward; modified laryngeal tie-forward using a suture-button; and modified laryngeal tie-forwar

Identification of circumferential regional heterogeneity of ascending thoracic aneurysmal aorta by biaxial mechanical testing.

Ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) can present an asymmetrical aortic dilatation compared with patients with tricuspid aortic valve (TAV). This pattern of aneurysm dilatation led us to hypothesize that biomechanical differences likely induced by regional heterogeneity of material properties can underlie the observed asymmetric enlargement discrepancies between BAV ATAA and TAV ATAA. This study aimed to characterize the mechanical properties and associated aortic tissue stiffness changes along the circumferential direction of aortic rings coll

Virtual reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament for mechanical testing of total knee arthroplasty implants.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) design continues to be refined. As part of the pre-clinical design process, kinematic evaluation under ideal circumstances must be simulated. Previously, this was accomplished mechanically through the use of elastomeric bumpers and human cadaver models, which can be costly and time-intensive. With improved technology, a six-axis joint simulator now allows for virtual ligament reconstruction. The aim of this study was to create and evaluate a virtual posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) model to simulate native knee kinematics for component testing in TKA.

A review of mechanical and synaptic processes in otolith transduction of sound and vibration for clinical VEMP testing.

Older studies of mammalian otolith physiology have focused mainly on sustained responses to low-frequency (<50 Hz) or maintained linear acceleration. So the otoliths have been regarded as accelerometers. Thus evidence of otolithic activation and high-precision phase locking to high-frequency sound and vibration appears to be very unusual. However, those results are exactly in accord with a substantial body of knowledge of otolith function in fish and frogs. It is likely that phase locking of otolith afferents to vibration is a general property of all vertebrates. This review examines the liter

Hormonal mechanisms and the optimal use of luteinizing hormone tests in human menstrual cycle research.

Tests of whether women's psychology or behavior shifts during the fertile window vs. other cycle phase regions often employ a design in which fertile window test sessions are scheduled after a positive urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) test result. Lobmaier and Bachofner (2018) point out that this design will schedule high fecundity test sessions at the very end of the fertile window, if not later, when fecundity is not at its highest. I agree with their arguments, and here argue that the problems with this scheduling technique appear even more severe if one considers the hormonal mechanisms th

Ventral tegmental area cholinergic mechanisms mediate behavioral responses in the forced swim test.

Recent studies revealed a causal link between ventral tegmental area (VTA) phasic dopamine (DA) activity and pro-depressive and antidepressant-like behavioral responses in rodent models of depression. Cholinergic activity in the VTA has been demonstrated to regulate phasic DA activity, but the role of VTA cholinergic mechanisms in depression-related behavior is unclear. The goal of this study was to determine whether pharmacological manipulation of VTA cholinergic activity altered behavioral responding in the forced swim test (FST) in rats. Here, male Sprague-Dawley rats received systemic or V

Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia: incidence, clinical features, laboratory testing, and pathogenic mechanisms.

Drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia (DIIT) is a relatively uncommon adverse reaction caused by drug-dependent antibodies (DDAbs) that react with platelet membrane glycoproteins only when the implicated drug is present. Although more than 100 drugs have been associated with causing DIIT, recent reviews of available data show that carbamazepine, eptifibatide, ibuprofen, quinidine, quinine, oxaliplatin, rifampin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and vancomycin are probably the most frequently implicated. Patients with DIIT typically present with petechiae, bruising, and epistaxis caused by an acu

Novel lap test determines the mechanics of delamination between annular lamellae of the intervertebral disc.

Delamination between lamellae of the annulus fibrosus is a crucial stage of intervertebral disc herniation, and to better understand the mechanics of the delamination process, a novel lap test was devised. Specimens consisting of two adjacent, naturally bonded lamellae were obtained from the cervical region of frozen porcine spines. They were cut into specimens nominally 3.5mm wide by 7 mm long and tabs of the deep and superficial layers were removed from opposite ends of the specimens so that a 4.5-5.0mm long intact interface remained between the lamellae. Specimens were mounted in a BioTeste

Extensor mechanism laxity at the metacarpophalangeal joint as identified by a new provocative test: predisposition to dislocation.

A tendon subluxation test was performed on the unaffected side in 13 patients with traumatic extensor tendon dislocation of the middle finger and on both middle fingers in 800 healthy controls to identify extensor mechanism laxity at the metacarpophalangeal joint. Ten of the 13 patients with dislocation had laxity of middle finger extensor tendon, compared with 174 of the 800 (22%) controls. The difference in these rates of extensor tendon laxity is significant (P<0.0001), and suggests that extensor mechanism laxity at the metacarpophalangeal joint may predispose to traumatic extensor tendon d

Fabrication and mechanical testing of polydioxanone hook cross biodegradable self-expandable enteric stent: impact of fabrication density and mechanical properties of the stent.

BACKGROUND: The mechanical properties of biodegradable stent when fabricated using different number of pins per row of fabrication has been limited. We compared the radial compressive force of polydioxanone (PDO) stent that was fabricated in hook and cross manner, using 13, 17 and 19 pins per row and measure the radial compressive force and ex vivo deployment. METHODS: The PDO stents fabricated by the in-house aluminum mandrel were tested for radial force using plate compression until the stent achieved 50% strain. The relationship between compression force and %strain was calculated. Ex vivo

An Official American Thoracic Society/American College of Chest Physicians Clinical Practice Guideline: Liberation from Mechanical Ventilation in Critically Ill Adults. Rehabilitation Protocols, Ventilator Liberation Protocols, and Cuff Leak Tests.

BACKGROUND: Interventions that lead to earlier liberation from mechanical ventilation can improve patient outcomes. This guideline, a collaborative effort between the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians, provides evidence-based recommendations to optimize liberation from mechanical ventilation in critically ill adults. METHODS: Two methodologists performed evidence syntheses to summarize available evidence relevant to key questions about liberation from mechanical ventilation. The methodologists appraised the certainty in the evidence (i.e., the quality of e

Comparative analysis of shear wave elastography and biaxial testing for accurate soft tissue mechanical assessment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to validate the efficacy of shear wave elastography for biomedical research by demonstrating its ability to accurately and non-destructively characterize tissue stiffness in-situ. While this study validated a specific device, the underlying physical principle - shear wave propagation speed for stiffness measurement - suggests these results should generalize to other shear wave elastography systems operating with similar specifications and measurement protocols. METHODS: To validate the ability of the shear wave elastography function to measure absolute tissue stiffn

Remote clinical trial to test mechanisms of 'practice quitting' treatment: Trial design and methodological report.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder is a chronic, relapsing health condition that necessitates a chronic care approach. However, there are limited treatment strategies relevant to individuals who smoke across a continuum of motivation to quit. Further, there is no clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying treatment strategies to engage individuals who are not yet ready to quit smoking. METHODS: The current study will enroll 780 individuals who smoke and are unmotivated to quit within the next month through a nationwide remote clinical trial (NCT05513872). Participants are randomized to re

Multi-omics tests identify novel shared genetic mechanisms of primary biliary cholestasis and sarcopenia.

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) may affect skeletal muscles through the muscle-liver axis, subsequently leading to sarcopenia. Our study aims to explore the unclear genetic relationships between PBC and sarcopenia. We investigated the shared genetic architecture of PBC and sarcopenia using advanced statistical genetics methods and genome-wide association summary data. We employed global and local genetic correlation to gain potential shared biological mechanisms. We identified risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and functionally annotated genomic multi-markers by conducting the unifi

Study on the energy evolution mechanism and periodic micro-fracture of the BR under triaxial compression tests.

In underground metal mining, the complex environment and in-situ stress control requirements impose increasingly strict standards on backfill mining methods. Owing to its advantages of safety, high efficiency, economy, and environmental friendliness, backfill mining has become an inevitable choice for green mining. This study focuses on the two-step stope post-backfill method, where the stability of the backfill-encased-rock (BR) composite structure-formed by backfill wrapping rock-plays a crucial role in overall stope stability.Taking the BR composite structure as the research object, with si
