Plastic surgeons around the globe are implementing projects that mix audit with medical research to ensure and improve the level of care offered to patients with cleft lip and palate. We performed an audit of the treatment of genital warts at our clinic by reviewing the case notes of 302 patients who presented with a first episode of genital warts. 186 were suitable for inclusion, of whom over 90% were clear of warts within three months. However, even after just one month of treatment, 84.9% of men and 60.2% of women were clear of warts. On the basis of this information, we can be more optimistic when advising patients about the likely duration of treatment.

Audit is essential for good medical practice, but is time-consuming, and each unit has been left to devise their own techniques. One method is described using a widely available computer package that allows the results to be charted and updated automatically. Any deterioration in performance is thus readily apparent. This method has been particularly useful for auditing shunt infections, but could easily be adapted for other uses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is currently little published guidance on the management of anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication in patients admitted with epistaxis. The routine practice of withholding such medication in an attempt to control the epistaxis is common in the UK. However, this practice is not evidence-based, is often unnecessary, and can be associated with significant morbidity. This study introduces a treatment algorithm for oral anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy in epistaxis patients, validated through a completed audit cycle.

BACKGROUND: Data extraction tools (DETs) are increasingly being used for research and audit of general practice, despite their limitations.Objective This study explores the accuracy of Pap smear rates obtained with a DET compared to that of the Pap smear rate obtained with a manual file audit.
METHOD: A widely available DET was used to establish the rate of Pap smears in a large multi-general practice (multi-GP) in regional New South Wales followed by a manual audit of patient files. The main outcome measure was identification of possible discrepancies between the rates established.
