Introduction of Meglumine Diatrizoate into the Middle Cranial Fossa: A Rare Fatal Complication of Temporomandibular Joint Arthrography.

The authors here report a rare fatal complication of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrography. A 57-year-old woman suddenly exhibited spasm and dizziness during TMJ arthrography. A multislice CT scanning of head demonstrated a defect in the roof of the glenoid fossa and unanticipated introduction of meglumine diatrizoate into the middle cranial fossa, which should account for neurotoxic symptoms of the patient and could be fatal if not appropriately treated in time. As TMJ puncture is widely performed in clinical practice and generally considered a safe technique, this case might serve as a

Cost-effectiveness of meglumine antimoniate versus miltefosine caregiver DOT for the treatment of pediatric cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Oral miltefosine has been shown to be non-inferior to first-line, injectable meglumine antimoniate (MA) for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in children. Miltefosine may be administered via in-home caregiver Directly Observed Therapy (cDOT), while patients must travel to clinics to receive MA. We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing miltefosine by cDOT versus MA for pediatric CL in southwest Colombia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPLE FINDINGS: We developed a Monte Carlo model comparing the cost-per-cure of miltefosine by cDOT compared to MA from patient, government

Clinical and Parasitological Features of Patients with American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis that Did Not Respond to Treatment with Meglumine Antimoniate.

BACKGROUND: American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is a complicated disease producing about 67.000 new cases per year. The severity of the disease depends on the parasite species; however in the vast majority of cases species confirmation is not feasible. WHO suggestion for ACL produced by Leishmania braziliensis, as first line treatment, are pentavalent antimonial derivatives (Glucantime or Sodium Stibogluconate) under systemic administration. According to different authors, pentavalent antimonial derivatives as treatment for ACL show a healing rate of about 75% and reasons for treatment fail

PANCREATIC TOXICITY AS AN ADVERSE EFFECT INDUCED BY MEGLUMINE ANTIMONIATE THERAPY IN A CLINICAL TRIAL FOR CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania. Pentavalent antimonials are the first choice drugs for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), although doses are controversial. In a clinical trial for CL we investigated the occurrence of pancreatic toxicity with different schedules of treatment with meglumine antimoniate (MA). Seventy-two patients were allocated in two different therapeutic groups: 20 or 5 mg of pentavalent antimony (Sb5+)/kg/day for 20 or 30 days, respectively. Looking for adverse effects, patients were asked about abdominal pa

Intralesional meglumine antimoniate for the treatment of localised cutaneous leishmaniasis: a retrospective review of a Brazilian referral centre.

Although intralesional meglumine antimoniate (MA) infiltration is considered an option for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) therapy and is widely used in the Old World, there have been few studies supporting this therapeutic approach in the Americas. This study aims to describe outcomes and adverse events associated with intralesional therapy for CL. This retrospective study reviewed the experience of a Brazilian leishmaniasis reference centre using intralesional MA to treat 31 patients over five years (2008 and 2013). The median age was 63 years (22-86) and the median duration time of the lesions

Effects of flunixin meglumine and prostaglandin F2 α treatments on the development and quality of bovine embryos in vitro.

Assisted reproduction procedures, such as embryo transfer (ET) and artificial insemination (AI), in cattle could induce the secretion of prostaglandin F2 -alpha (PGF2 α) from uterine horns which may in turn interrupt embryo development and implantation. This study investigated the effect of flunixin meglumine (FM), prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) and FM combined with PGF2α supplementation in culture medium (IVC-II) on the development and quality of in vitro produced bovine embryos. The development rate of embryos was significantly higher in the FM group (33.3%) than in control (24.3%), PGF2 α (

Dressings combined with injection of meglumine antimoniate in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected infectious disease and a major health problem in several developing countries. Despite some reasonable explanation for their potential benefits, there is only trace evidence regarding the role of dressings in the treatment of CL. METHODS: This randomized, assessor-blind, controlled, clinical trial was conducted in an endemic area for CL caused by Leishmania major in Iran to assess the efficacy of administration of weekly intralesional meglumine antimoniate (i.l.MA) either alone or combined with application of a silver or a non-silver pol

Efficacy of combined therapy with liposome-encapsulated meglumine antimoniate and allopurinol in treatment of canine visceral leishmaniasis.

An innovative liposomal formulation of meglumine antimoniate (LMA) was recently reported to promote both long-term parasite suppression and reduction of infectivity to sand flies in dogs with visceral leishmaniasis. However, 5 months after treatment, parasites were still found in the bone marrow of all treated dogs. In order to improve treatment with LMA, the present study aimed to evaluate its efficacy in combination with allopurinol. Mongrel dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum were treated with six doses of LMA (6.5 mg Sb/kg of body weight/dose) given at 4-day intervals, plus al

Should we continue to indicate meglumine antimoniate as first-line treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis in Tunisia.

Meglumine antimoniate compounds have been the mainstay of treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) for decades. We propose to evaluate the place of these drugs in this indication in Tunisia. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 67 patients treated for (CL) using meglumine antimoniate at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 15 day from 1998 to 2010. Clinical and laboratory data, tolerance, and outcome were precised. Side effects were recorded in 17 among 67 patients (25%). The average age was 44.4 years (2-86 years). Antimony intolerance events occurred in 11 patients, stibio-intoxication eve

Assessing omeprazole and flunixin meglumine co-administration in treating equine gastric ulcer syndrome in Mongolian horses.

BACKGROUND: Flunixin meglumine (FM) is commonly used in painful conditions in horses; however, it may contribute to equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS). Some veterinarians combine omeprazole (OME) and FM to reduce EGUS risk. However, the efficacy and safety of this combination in Mongolian horses with chronic lameness remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the changes in lameness and EGUS scores in Mongolian horses through the comparison of three treatment strategies: FM, FM + OME and placebo treated control (CON) and to assess the effects of these treatments on gastric fluid pH, serum t

Meglumine antımoniate-TiO2@Ag nanoparticle combinations reduce toxicity of the drug while enhancing its antileishmanial effect.

Currently, the treatment of leishmaniasis is increasingly insufficient as current antileishmanial drugs have many disadvantages such as toxic side effects, high cost, and growing drug resistance. In order to overcome these disadvantages, researchers have recently focused on combination therapy by using pentavalent antimonials in conjunction with other antileihmanial compounds. Our previous study found that TiO2@Ag nanoparticles (TiAgNps) demonstrated significant antileishmanial effects. However, a lethal dose of TiAgNps on L. topica promastigotes was found to be toxic for macrophage cells. Mor

Determination of Flunixin Meglumine in Veterinary Pharmaceutical Formulations by Capillary Electrophoresis With Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection.

This work describes a novel, simple, fast, reliable, and environmentally friendly analytical method for the determination of the anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug flunixin meglumine (FM) in veterinary pharmaceutical formulations. The method uses capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (CE-C4D) to quantify meglumine (N-methylglucamine), the counterion of flunixin in FM. This approach allows the use of the less expensive and more readily available meglumine, rather than FM or flunixin, as the standard reagent. Lithium ions were used as an interna

Ozonated Sunflower Oil Stimulates the Local Antioxidant System and Helps Meglumine Antimoniate to Ameliorate Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Lesions.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an infectious disease that causes disfiguring scars, which are not eliminated by drugs available to the treatment. Besides, these marks lead to economic and social and economic losses. Ozonated oil has wound healing activity as proven in the literature, and its use with the standard treatment to leishmaniasis could enhance the therapy. This study investigated ozonated sunflower oil as an adjuvant to meglumine antimoniate (MA) in the treatment of lesions caused by Leishmania amazonensis. BALB/c mice were infected with the parasite, and after the lesions appeared, they
