Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Is Associated with Low Levels of Immunoglobulin Chains and Cystatin-SN.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a highly prevalent condition and the most common cause of evaporative dry eye disease. Studying the proteome of MGD can result in important advances in the management of the condition. Here, we collected tear film samples from treatment naïve patients with MGD (n = 10) and age-matched controls (n = 11) with Schirmer filtration paper. The samples were analyzed with label-free quantification nano liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The proteins were considered differentially expressed if p < 0.05. A total of 88 proteins were significantly regulate

Association of Serum Lipid Level with Meibum Biosynthesis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: A Review.

The primary role of meibomian glands (MGs) is to actively synthesize and secret lipids and proteins spread onto the tear film, and the glandular lipids promote tear stability, prevent evaporation, and reduce friction. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eye disease and one of the most common ophthalmic problems worldwide. MGs are densely innervated and regulated by hormones and growth factors. However, since the polar and nonpolar lipids are produced through processes in MGs that are not completely understood, a relevant question has been raised: Would the altered sys

Intense Pulsed Light for the Treatment of Dry Eye Owing to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

Dry eye disease (DED) is an increasingly common condition and one of the most common complaints of patients. The vast majority of DED is caused by the so-called "evaporative" subtype, that is mainly caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Intense pulsed light (IPL) devices employ high intensity pulses of polychromatic lights with a broad range of wavelength (515-1200 nm). IPL treatment has been utilized for years in the field of dermatology, and then its use was applied to ophthalmology for the treatment of MGD. Recently, a new device employing IPL was specifically designed for the perioc

Tear Lactoferrin and Features of Ocular Allergy in Different Severities of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

SIGNIFICANCE: Meibomian gland dysfunction, but not atrophy, was associated with lower tear lactoferrin concentration, greater dry eye, and allergic symptoms, indicating greater inflammation and discomfort in patients with lower meibomian gland expressibility. PURPOSE: Meibomian gland dysfunction can potentially damage adjacent palpebral structures, which may induce inflammation in accessory lacrimal glands and affect lactoferrin secretion. This study aimed to examine the relationships between the severity of meibomian gland dysfunction with tear lactoferrin, conjunctival cell morphology, and

Discoid lupus erythematosus of the eyelids associated with staphylococcal blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Lower eyelid involvement occurs in 6% of patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). Eyelid lesions are rarely the initial manifestation of DLE. We describe a 25-year-old woman presenting with discoid lesions of the lower eyelids, staphylococcal blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction, who later developed a discoid lesion on the chin. Histopathological and immunofluorescence studies of a biopsy specimen from this lesion established the diagnosis of DLE. We are unaware of any previously reported cases of DLE presenting with discoid eyelid lesions associated with staphylococcal blephari
