Relationship between Meige syndrome and alpha-methyldopa-induced parkinsonism.

We studied two patients with Meige syndrome who developed alpha-methyldopa-induced parkinsonism. Opposite responses of parkinsonian and dystonic symptoms to antiparkinson drugs in some cases suggest a functionally reciprocal relationship between these disorders.

Blepharospasm and Meige syndrome: a review of diagnostic, aetiological and treatment approaches.

No known pathophysiological mechanism can explain the majority of cases of blepharospasm, i.e. spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle; it may also affect the lower face, neck and jaw--Meige syndrome. Only symptomatic treatment is possible, and surgery should be a last resort for severe cases. Much more clinical research will be required before promising behavioural interventions, including biofeedback, can be considered treatments of choice.

Blepharospasm, Meige syndrome, and hemifacial spasm: treatment with botulinum toxin.

In 34 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm, 5 with Meige syndrome, and 11 with hemifacial spasm, local injection of botulinum toxin gave temporary relief from the involuntary movements of the eyelids. Local ophthalmologic side effects were minimal. There are no known systemic side effects. The procedure had to be repeated every 12 weeks. Tolerance to the toxin did not appear.

[A Case of Pseudo-Meigs' Syndrome Caused by Ovarian Metastasis from Colon Cancer].

This case pertains to a female patient in her 60s who was diagnosed with carcinoma in the cecum with lung, ovarian, and peritoneal metastases. She complained of abdominal distension and poor feeding because her ascites and ovarian metastasis worsened 18 months after chemotherapy initiation. Repeated cytologic examination of the ascitic fluid revealed no malignant cells. Therefore, Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome was suspected. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed as palliative surgery because of the patient's reduced capacity to perform activities of daily living(ADL)due to ascites. After pall

Two Patients With Meigs' Syndrome and Elevated Serum CA-125: A Case Report.

Patients with Meigs' syndrome and elevated serum CA-125 are not frequently reported. A 59-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman sought help because of progressive shortness of breath caused by pleural effusion. The presence of a pelvic mass was noted in both the patients and was thought to be the cause of the effusion. Both patients had elevated serum CA-125, which raised the possibility of malignancy. After complete resection of the tumors, the pathologic reports confirmed a benign and a low-grade malignant ovarian neoplasia, respectively. We comment on the outcome and follow-up of these two

Three Cases of Pseudo-Meigs' Syndrome Secondary to Ovarian Metastases from Colorectal Cancer.

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome is used to describe cases of ascites and/or pleural effusion associated with ovarian neoplasms other than benign tumors, which improve after removal of the ovarian lesion. We present three cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to ovarian metastasis from colorectal cancer. In case 1, the patient has severe dyspnea and hypoxia due to massive right pleural effusion; therefore preoperative thoracic drainage was needed. In case 2, the patient needed paracentesis every two or three days to improve abdominal distension. After two courses of 5-fluorouracil, levofolinate, and

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome caused by retroperitoneal tumor in a patient with Ebstein anomaly.

We report an extremely rare case of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome caused by a retroperitoneal tumor in a patient with Ebstein anomaly. A 60-year-old woman was admitted because of marked hydrothorax and ascites. She also had pleural effusion. Because echocardiography revealed Ebstein anomaly, medical treatment was performed, under the diagnosis of heart failure. However, her pleural effusion and ascites did not completely disappear. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a round solid retroperitoneal pelvic mass, with a diameter of approximately 5 cm in the vesicouterine fossa. After resection of the tu

Effects of onabotulinum toxin type A injections in patients with Meige's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Meige's syndrome is a type of facial dystonia characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. Although botulinum toxin type A (OBTA) injections are the standard treatment, evidence of their effectiveness and safety in this scenario is still lacking. OBJECTIVE: Our research aimed to evaluate the improvement and occurrence of side effects following injections of onabotulinum toxin type A (OBTA) in patients with Meige's syndrome. METHODS: Patients with Meige's syndrome undergoing botulinum toxin injections were enrolled in this study. We ass

A Presentation of Meige Syndrome With Associated Upper Motor Neuron Symptoms.

Meige syndrome (MS) is a cranial dystonia that involves blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. It can also evolve to include other adjacent muscle groups in the cervical region. It typically presents in middle-aged females, and while the disorder is relatively uncommon, its exact prevalence varies. Diagnosis is typically made with a thorough history and physical and workup to rule out other causes. Treatment options include medical management with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonists, dopamine antagonists, and anticholinergics for short-term management. Long-term treatment options are

Case Report: Ovarian fibroma: typical presentation with Meigs's Syndrome.

Meigs's syndrome is characterized by a triad of ovarian fibroma, ascites, and pleural effusion which can be managed surgically. Pleural effusion and ascites are usually transudative. Ovarian fibroma is an uncommon tumor. We herein report a case of Meigs's syndrome in a 61-year-old woman who presented with complaints of abdominal pain for two-three months along with decreased appetite and constipation. On examination, there was decreased air entry in the right side of the chest, generalized abdominal distention, and a firm irregular mass was felt which was mobile and extending from upper border

Aripiprazole in Meige Syndrome: Clinical Response and Implications for Treatment Development.

INTRODUCTION: Meige syndrome is a segmental form of dystonia where botulinum toxins are the preferred treatment option. However, its invasive nature, treatment costs, partial responsiveness, and benefit duration are some of their limitations. METHODS: Six consecutive subjects with Meige syndrome were treated only with aripiprazole. RESULTS: A dramatic response was obtained in all subjects during the first weeks of treatment. Aripiprazole mean ± SD daily dose was 7.9 ± 3.6 mg. Three subjects developed parkinsonism related to aripiprazole treatment; the former improved after reducing the dosag

Blepharospasm, Oromandibular Dystonia, and Meige Syndrome: Clinical and Genetic Update.

Meige syndrome (MS) is cranial dystonia characterized by the combination of upper and lower cranial involvement and including binocular eyelid spasms (blepharospasm; BSP) and involuntary movements of the jaw muscles (oromandibular dystonia; OMD). The etiology and pathogenesis of this disorder of the extrapyramidal system are not well-understood. Neurologic and ophthalmic examinations often reveal no abnormalities, making diagnosis difficult and often resulting in misdiagnosis. A small proportion of patients have a family history of the disease, but to date no causative genes have been identifi

The Great Mimicker: Pseudo-Meig Syndrome in a Pregnant Patient. A Review.

Meig syndrome is the triad of benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion. Pseudo-Meig syndrome mimics the Meig syndrome triad; however, in pseudo-Meig syndrome, the ovarian tumor usually represents a primary malignancy or metastases. Differentiating Meig from pseudo-Meig syndrome is challenging both clinically and with diagnostic imaging but is important because prognoses for these distinct entities are drastically different. Evidence-based sonographic prediction models are valuable because they can aid in this distinction. Here, we present the first reported case of pseudo-Meig syndr

Meige's syndrome: History, epidemiology, clinical features, pathogenesis and treatment.

'Meige's syndrome' is a type of cranial dystonia characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia and can be associated with complex movement of lower facial muscles, mouth, jaw, tongue, pharyngeal and cervical muscles. Frequently, blepharospasm is the earliest clinical manifestation, which spreads over a period of time to involve other cranial and extra-cranial muscles. Common characteristics of this syndrome are well known, but their variety is wide. Different eponyms such as "Breughel syndrome", "Wood syndrome", "Blepharospasm plus", "Segmental cranial dystonia" and "Segmental cran

Tardive Blepharospasm and Meige Syndrome during Treatment with Quetiapine and Olanzapine.

Meige syndrome, which has been presented in tardive syndromes, is a form of blepharospasm accompanied by oromandibular dystonia with manifestations over the face, jaw, and neck. A blepharospasm can be induced by antihistamines, dopaminomimetic or sympathomimetic drugs, or long-term exposure to dopamine antagonists. Atypical antipsychotics have less extrapyramidal side effects because of a weak dopamine D2 receptor binding affinity or a strong antagonistic effect to serotonin 5-HT2a receptor and have been known to cause less tardive dyskinesia than typical antipsychotics. Thus, in literature, a

Effectiveness of unilateral pallidotomy for meige syndrome confirmed by motion analysis.

BACKGROUND: We report the case of a 64-year-old woman with bilateral manifestation of Meige syndrome (MS) successfully treated with left-side unilateral ventroposterolateral pallidotomy. METHODS: Symptoms were evaluated according to the Burke-Fahn-Marsden dystonia rating scale. Head tremor, blepharospasm and orofacial dyskinesia were measured with an infrared, video-based, computerized, real-time passive marker-based analyzer of motions (RTPAM). RESULTS: The Burke-Fahn-Marsden score showed a 90.2% reduction (from 25.5 to 2.5) at 6 months, and an 88.2% long-lasting benefit (to 3.0) at the 3-y

Bilateral pallidal deep brain stimulation in primary Meige syndrome.

Primary Meige syndrome is an idiopathic movement disorder that manifests as craniofacial and often cervical dystonias. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) has emerged as a powerful surgical option in the treatment of primary generalized or segmental dystonia. However, the experience with GPi-DBS in Meige syndrome is limited. We followed 5 patients with disabling Meige syndrome treated by bilateral GPi-DBS for 49 ± 43.7 (mean ± SD) months. All patients were assessed before surgery and at the last follow-up after surgery using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating

[Meige's syndrome associated with basal ganglia and thalamic functional disorders].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or single positron emission computed tomography (SPECT) or both were performed and the responses of surface electromyography (EMG) were examined in seven cases of Meige's syndrome. MRI or SPECT or both demonstrated lesions of the basal ganglia, the thalamus, or both in five of the cases. Surface EMG revealed abnormal burst discharges in the orbicularis oculi and a failure of reciprocal muscular activity between the frontalis and orbicularis oculi in all the cases. These findings suggest that voluntary motor control and reciprocal activity in the basal ganglia-t
