BACKGROUND: African Traditional Medicine (ATM) is used for the healthcare of about 80% of the rural populations of the continent of Africa. The practices of ATM make use of plant-products, which are known to contain plant-based secondary metabolites or natural products (NPs), likely to play key roles in drug discovery, particularly as lead compounds. For various reasons, including resistance of strains of Plasmodium to known anti-malarial drugs, local African populations often resort to plant-based treatments and/or a combination of this and standard anti-malarial regimens. Emphasis has been l

Eight new triterpenoids, prototiamins A-G (1-6, 9) and seco-tiaminic acid A (10), were isolated along with four known compounds from the bark of Entandrophragma congoënse. Their structures were elucidated by means of HRMS and different NMR techniques and chemical transformations. Assignments of relative and absolute configurations for the new compounds were achieved using NOESY experiments and by chemical modification including the advanced Mosher's method. Additionally, the structure and relative configuration of compound 3 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound

Swietenia macrophylla (mahogany) is a highly valued timber species, whereas the leaves are considered to be waste product. A total of 27 phenolic compounds were identified in aqueous extracts from mahogany leaves by comparing retention times and mass spectra data with those of authentic standards using LC-ESI-MS/MS. Polyphenols play an important role in plants as defense mechanisms against pests and pathogens and have potent antioxidant properties. In terms of health applications, interest has increased considerably in naturally occurring antioxidant sources, since they can retard the progress

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Kenya, most people especially in rural areas use traditional medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases including malaria. Malaria is of national concern in Kenya, in view of development of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs especially chloroquine, which had been effective and affordable. There is need for alternative and affordable therapy. Many antimalarial drugs have been derived from medicinal plants and this is evident from the reported antiplasmodial activity.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study reports on the in vivo antimal

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Flavonoids interact with multiple targets in Central Nervous System resulting in a broad neuroprotection mediated by complementary processes and synergic interactions. Therefore, flavonoid-based therapies may input positive outcomes in the prevention and early management of neurodegenerative diseases. In Brazilian folk medicine Trichilia catigua is used for its neuroactive properties, such as neurostimulant, antioxidant and anti-neuroinflammatory, while Turnera diffusa is traditionally used as a tonic in neurasthenia. Both species are known to be rich in flavono

Phytochemical investigation of the seeds of Khaya senegalensis (Desr.) A. Juss. led to the isolation of three new mexicanolide-type limonoids (1, 2, 5) and two new gedunin-type limonoids (3, 4), along with five known compounds (6-10). The structures of all new compounds including absolute configuration were unequivocally established by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including HRESIMS, 1D/2D NMR and ECD, and those of 1-3 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Notably, limonoids 1-4 were identified as rare lactonization derivatives arising from the furan ring

Cycloartane triterpenoids (CATT), natural compounds derived from Dysoxylum malabaricum, have substantiated promising anticancer potential, specifically against breast adenocarcinoma T-47D cells. However, the underlying mechanisms of action remain largely unexplored. The present work investigated the antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects of CATT on human breast cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. CATT exhibited potent cytotoxicity against T-47D cells (IC50 = 40 µg/ml) while sparing normal cells (IC50 > 80 µg/ml). CATT treatment significantly suppresses the growth of breast cancer cell

Arthropods are dangerous vectors of agents of deadly diseases, which may hit as epidemics or pandemics in the increasing world population of humans and animals. Among them, ticks transmit more pathogen species than any other group of blood-feeding arthropods worldwide. Thus, the effective and eco-friendly control of tick vectors in a constantly changing environment is a crucial challenge. A number of novel routes have been attempted to prevent and control tick-borne diseases, including the development of (i) vaccines against viruses vectored by ticks; (ii) pheromone-based control tools, with s
