Memory complaints are common after stroke, yet there have been very few studies of the outcome of memory rehabilitation in these patients. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a new manualised, group-based memory training programme. Forty outpatients with a single-stroke history and ongoing memory complaints were enrolled. The six-week course involved education and strategy training and was evaluated using a wait-list crossover design, with three assessments conducted 12 weeks apart. Outcome measures included: tests of anterograde memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test: RAVLT; C

Cholinergic system has an important role in memory and learning. Abnormal cognitive and behavioral changes have been reported in Japanese encephalitis (JE), but their basis has not been comprehensively evaluated. In this study, we report memory and learning and its association with acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, JE virus titer, and with histopathological observations in a rat model of JE. Wistar rats were intracerebrally inoculated on 12th day with 3 × 106 pfu/ml of JE virus. Memory and learning were assessed by the active and passive avoidance tests on 10, 33, and 48 days post inoculat

BACKGROUND: The hippocampal alterations resulting from hydrocephalus are associated with various cognitive dysfunctions. Reduced learning and memory are early functional deficits that recover with time in experimental hydrocephalus. This study investigated the recovery processes of learning and memory loss in relation to the morphology of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and the degree of expansion of the ventricles.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hydrocephalus was induced in adult mice by intracisternal injection of sterile kaolin while controls received sham operation. Neurobehavioral tests for memory

Three studies were conducted evaluating semantic and phonological coding deficits as alternative explanations of reading disability. In the first study, poor and normal readers in second and sixth grade were compared on various tests evaluating semantic development as well as on tests evaluating rapid naming and pseudoword decoding as independent measures of phonological coding ability. In a second study, the same subjects were given verbal memory and visual-verbal learning tasks using high and low meaning words as verbal stimuli and Chinese ideographs as visual stimuli. On the semantic tasks,

Objective: Memory dysfunction is a persistent cognitive symptom following traumatic brain injury (TBI), negatively impacting capacity for independent living and productivity. Traditional scoring of neuropsychological memory tests does not allow for differentiation of specific impairments of encoding, consolidation and/or retrieval, or the potential impact of strategy deficits. Method: The current study examined performance of 142 moderate-to-severe TBI participants and 68 demographically matched healthy controls on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) using Item Specific Data Analysis

This study aims to investigate the mechanisms through which fructose diphosphate (FDP) causes anti-hypoxia and anti-fatigue effects and improves learning and memory. Mice were divided into three groups: low-dose FDP (FDP-L), high-dose FDP (FDP-H), and a control group. Acute toxic hypoxia induced by carbon monoxide, sodium nitrite, and potassium cyanide and acute cerebral ischemic hypoxia were used to investigate the anti-hypoxia ability of FDP. The tests of rod-rotating, mouse tail suspension, and swimming endurance were used to explore the anti-fatigue effects of FDP. The Morris water maze ex

A series of twelve cases, all of whom had received surgery for the removal of a colloid cyst in the third ventricle, was examined on a series of memory tests. The only consistent predictor of poor memory performance that could be detected from MRIs was the presence of bilateral interruption of the fornix, which occurred in three of the subjects. Although these three cases were poor on tests of learning and recall, there was evidence that recognition was less impaired. The subjects were also tested on a set of recognition and concurrent discriminations that closely matched tests given to non-hu

Introduction. Cognitive deficits are commonly reported by patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Duloxetine, a dual serotonin/noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, may improve cognitive deficits in MDD. It is unclear if cognitive improvements occur independently of antidepressant effects with standard antidepressant medications. Methods. Thirty participants with MDD who endorsed cognitive deficits at screening received 12-week duloxetine treatment. Twenty-one participants completed treatment and baseline and posttreatment cognitive testing. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated B

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the present study was to assess the extent to which reading disabilities (RD) in young adults are related to deficits in specific aspects of temporary storage of verbal information, namely, memory span and the central executive (CE) component of working memory. Thirty-two native Hebrew-speaking young adults with and without RD were administered a battery of memory tasks. These tasks included Digit Span Forward and Backward tests and a new version of the Token Test (TT) which is aimed at detecting subtle deficits in auditory verbal working memory. Results showed signi

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for patients suffering from major depression. However, its use is limited due to concerns about negative effects on cognition. Unilateral ECT is associated with transient cognitive side-effects, while case-controlled studies investigating the effect of bilateral ECT on cognition remain scarce. We investigate the effects of bilateral ECT on cognition in depression in a longitudinal case-controlled study. We hypothesize that adverse cognitive effects of bilateral ECT are transient rather than long-term.

PURPOSE: Intermittent hypoxia (IH) is associated with learning/memory dysfunction during the early growth period. However, the sex- and subregion-specific brain vulnerability to IH and its effects on learning, memory, and emotional stability in infants remain unclear. This study investigated sex- and subregion-specific vulnerability to IH in the hippocampus, relating to memory and learning, and in the amygdala, relating to early emotional development in infant rats.
METHODS: Thirty-six 1-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to IH (IH group) or normoxic air (N group). Learning/memory func

INTRODUCTION: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent form of drug-resistant epilepsy with concurrent cognitive impairment. Prevention, earlier diagnosis, and personalized management of cognitive deficits in TLE require more understanding of underlying structural and functional brain Ialterations. No study has evaluated the performance of TLE patients in different cognitive domains based on their structural brain lesions.
METHODS: In this study, 69 refractory TLE patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) epilepsy protocol and several neuropsychological tests, consisting o

Caffeine, a widely consumed psychoactive substance, may affect the neurotoxicity of environmental toxins. The study aimed to investigate the effects of the combined administration of caffeine and heavy metal compounds (cadmium chloride and lead acetate) on brain tissue function, focusing on memory processes and oxidative stress parameters. Adult male Swiss mice were administered substances intraperitoneally for 10 days. A passive avoidance test evaluated long‑term memory, while the Y‑maze assessed spatial working memory. In addition, lipid peroxidation and glutathione levels, as well as supero

Sleep fragmentation is a common symptom in sleep disorders and other medical complaints resulting in excessive daytime sleepiness. The present study seeks to explore the effects of sleep fragmentation on learning and memory in a spatial reference memory task and a spatial working memory (WM) task. Fischer/Brown Norway rats lived in custom treadmills designed to induce locomotor activity every 2 min throughout a 24-h period. Separate rats were either on a treadmill schedule that allowed for consolidated sleep or experienced no locomotor activation. Rats were tested in one of two water maze-base

Scopolamine is the secondary metabolite of the Datura stramonium and act as a muscarinic receptor antagonist. Previous studies showed that scopolamine caused attention and memory deficit. However, the effects of scopolamine on specific cognitive functions, such as fear learning and social recognition, remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate the effects of scopolamine on fear learning, social memory, and neural activity in zebrafish, providing a novel perspective on its impact on cognitive and social behaviors. Here, we used equal number of male and female zebrafish as an animal model an

We analyzed verbal episodic memory learning and recall using the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III to determine how gender differences in AD compare to those seen in normal elderly and whether or not these differences impact assessment of AD. We administered the LM to both an AD and a Control group, each comprised of 21 men and 21 women, and found a large drop in performance from normal elders to AD. Of interest was a gender interaction whereby the women's scores dropped 1.6 times more than the men's did. Control women on average outperformed Control men on every asp

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A considerable amount of experimental evidence suggests that sleep plays a critical role in learning/memory processes. In addition to paradoxical sleep, slow wave sleep is also reported to be involved in the consolidation process of memories. Additionally, sleep deprivation can induce other behavioral modifications, such as emotionality and alternations in locomotor activity in rodents. These sleep deprivation-induced alterations in the behavioral state of animals could produce state-dependent learning and contribute, at least in part, to the amnestic effects of sleep depriva

The transition from recreational drug use to addiction involves pathological learning processes that support a persistent shift from flexible, goal-directed to habit behavioral control. Here, we examined the molecular mechanisms supporting altered function in hippocampal (HPC) and dorsolateral striatum (DLS) memory systems following abstinence from repeated cocaine. After 3 weeks of cocaine abstinence (experimenter- or self-administered), we tested new behavioral learning in male rats using a dual-solution maze task, which provides an unbiased approach to assess HPC- versus DLS-dependent learn

Diabetes mellitus can induce impairment in learning and memory. Cognitive and memory deficits are common in older adults and especially in those with diabetes. This is mainly because of hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and vascular abnormalities. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can decrease oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and inflammatory markers, and improve vascular function. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the possible effects of CoQ10 on cognitive function, learning, and memory in middle-aged healthy and diabetic rats. Adult middle-aged male Wistar rats (390-460 g, 12-13 m
