dab2 is required for the scavenging function of lymphatic endothelial cells in the zebrafish meninges.

To date it is only partially understood how the brain is cleared of waste products resulting from its high metabolic activity, although this process has important implications for the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Lymphatic vessels play a central role in maintaining fluid and tissue homeostasis, and the recent description of meningeal lymphatic vessels within the dura mater of mice, human and zebrafish has raised considerable interest in unraveling the function of these vessels. In zebrafish, brain lymphatic endothelial cells (BLECs) constitute an additional mening

Histological and Immunohistochemical Characterization of Vascular Alterations in Meninges of Cats Infected with Gurltia paralysans.

Gurltia paralysans, a metastrongyloid nematode, parasitizes in meningeal vessels in the thoracolumbar spinal cord of cats in South America and causes progressive paraparesis. Recently, the first report outside of South America described gurltiosis in a cat in Spain. As this parasitic disease has so far been largely neglected, especially outside of South America, the aim of the present case study was to add knowledge to the histologic and immunohistochemical characterization of central nervous lesions. To this purpose, formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples from the spinal c

Adult rhabdomyosarcoma originating in the temporal muscle, invading the skull and meninges: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin that mainly affects children. Spindle cell/sclerosing RMS (SSRMS) is even rarer. It is a new subtype that was added to the World Health Organization disease classification in 2013. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of adult SSRMS disease classification originating in the temporal muscle. CASE SUMMARY: SSRMS originating in the temporal muscle of a male adult enlarged rapidly, destroyed the skull, and invaded the meninges. The tumor was completely removed, and the postoperative patholo

Primary undifferentiated sarcoma of the meninges: A case report and comprehensive review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Sarcomas make up 1% of all cases of adult cancer, with 5-10% of those classified as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas (UPS/PUS) and 0.1-4.3% primary intracranial sarcomas. Intracranial undifferentiated sarcoma is characterized by an earlier age of onset and generally poorer prognosis compared to extracranial undifferentiated sarcomas. Current therapies involve surgical excision with wide margins and radiotherapy, with minimal data available regarding the efficacy of chemotherapy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 79-year-old man with a history of remote superficial bladder ca

A New Classification for Pathologies of Spinal Meninges, Part 1: Dural Cysts, Dissections, and Ectasias.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of pathologies of the spinal dura is often unclear and their management controversial. OBJECTIVE: To classify spinal dural pathologies analogous to vascular aneurysms, present their symptoms and surgical results. METHODS: Among 1519 patients with spinal space-occupying lesions, 66 patients demonstrated dural pathologies. Neuroradiological and surgical features were reviewed and clinical data analyzed. RESULTS: Saccular dural diverticula (type I, n = 28) caused by defects of both dural layers, dissections between dural layers (type II, n = 29) due to def

Secondary gliosarcoma with massive invasion of meninges, skull base, and soft tissue, and systemic metastasis.

INTRODUCTION: A common view is that head tremor (HT) in cervical dystonia (CD) decreases when the head assumes an unopposed dystonic posture and increases when the head is held at midline. However, this has not been examined with objective measures in a large, multicenter cohort. METHODS: For 80 participants with CD and HT, we analyzed videos from examination segments in which participants were instructed to 1) let their head drift to its most comfortable position (null point) and then 2) hold their head straight at midline. We used our previously developed Computational Motor Objective Rater

Ex vivo and in vivo diffusion of ropivacaine through spinal meninges: influence of absorption enhancers.

Following epidural administration, cerebrospinal fluid bioavailability of local anesthetics is low, one major limiting factor being diffusion across the arachnoid mater barrier. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of absorption enhancers on the meningeal permeability of epidurally administered ropivacaine. Five enhancers known for their ability to increase drug permeability via transcellular and/or paracellular pathways, i.e. palmitoyl carnitine, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, sodium caprate, dodecylphosphocholine and pentylglycerol, were tested ex vivo on fresh specimen of m

Histological evidence for drug diffusion across the cerebral meninges into the underlying neocortex in rats.

Transmeningeal pharmacotherapy has been proposed to treat neurological disorders with localized pathology, such as intractable focal epilepsy. As a step toward understanding the diffusion and intracortical spread of transmeningeally delivered drugs, the present study used histological methods to determine the extent to which a marker compound, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), can diffuse into the neocortex through the meninges. Rats were implanted with bilateral parietal cortical epidural cups filled with 50 mM NMDA on the right side and artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) in the contralateral s

The fine anatomy of the human spinal meninges. A light and scanning electron microscopy study.

The fine anatomy of the human spinal meninges was examined in five postmortem spinal cords taken within 12 hours after death from patients aged 15 months to 46 years. Specimens of spinal cord were viewed in transverse section and from the dorsal and ventral aspects by scanning electron microscopy. Transverse sections of spinal cord and meninges were also examined by light microscopy. The arachnoid mater was seen to be closely applied to the inner aspect of the dura. An intermediate fenestrated leptomeningeal layer was observed attached to the inner aspect of the arachnoid mater and was reflect

Hemangiopericytoma of the meninges of the optic nerve. A clinicopathologic report including electron microscopic observations.

A 61-year-old man complained of visual loss of his right eye following a systemic viral illness. At this time, complete ophthalmologic examination failed to disclose any abnormalities. Over the next months the patient developed dramatic loss of vision. Extensive workup, including CT scans, failed to clarify the underlying cause and a diagnosis of optic atropy following optic neuritis was made. The patient remained asymptomatic, but repeated CT scans depicted a fusiform enlargement of the intraorbital portion of the right optic nerve, three years after the onset of visual loss. The presumptive

The skull bone marrow-meninges-brain axis: A new sentinel for neuroinflammation regulation in ischemic stroke.

The central nervous system (CNS) has long been regarded as relatively immune-privileged, but the discovery of glymphatic transport and meningeal lymphatic vessels has reshaped our understanding of neuroimmune communication. In ischemic stroke, emerging evidence suggests that post-injury inflammation is regulated not only by systemic leukocyte recruitment and blood-brain barrier disruption but also by a spatially organized skull bone marrow-meninges-brain axis. Anatomical studies have identified vascular channels connecting calvarial bone marrow with the dura mater, providing a potential route

Intestinal infections establish antigen-specific, long-lived memory CD4+ T cells in the brain and meninges.

The meninges form the border between the brain and periphery and house a rich network of immune cells. Here we show that gastrointestinal challenges (intracellular or extracellular bacteria and parasites) reshape the nature of CD4+ T cells in the dura mater, the outer meningeal layer, changing the dominant polarization states to T helper (TH) 1, TH17 and TH2 cells, respectively, with differing cytokine profiles. This occurs via CXCR6-CXCL16-dependent migration of gut-activated CD4+ T cells to the central nervous system, where they establish long-lived memory populations around the dural venous

Primary Disseminated Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis of the Lungs, Brain, Meninges, and Abdomen: The World's First Case.

Tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease. It usually infects the lung, but dissemination to different organs results in a severe form of tuberculosis, i.e., disseminated tuberculosis. The situation becomes even more challenging when the infection is due to multidrug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The present case is a very rare one where a 17-year-old Indian girl presented with headache, vomiting, cough with expectoration, abdominal pain, and a seizure. A diagnostic workup led to the diagnosis of primary disseminated multidrug-resistant tuberculosis of the lungs, brain, me

Loss of Twist1 and balanced retinoic acid signaling from the meninges causes cortical folding in mice.

Secondary lissencephaly evolved in mice due to effects on neurogenesis and the tangential distribution of neurons. Signaling pathways that help maintain lissencephaly are still poorly understood. We show that inactivating Twist1 in the primitive meninges causes cortical folding in mice. Cell proliferation in the meninges is reduced, causing loss of arachnoid fibroblasts that express Raldh2, an enzyme required for retinoic acid synthesis. Regionalized loss of Raldh2 in the dorsolateral meninges is first detected when folding begins. The ventricular zone expands and the forebrain lengthens at th

Streptococcus pneumoniae Rapidly Translocate from the Nasopharynx through the Cribriform Plate to Invade the Outer Meninges.

The entry routes and translocation mechanisms of microorganisms or particulate materials into the central nervous system remain obscure We report here that Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), or polystyrene microspheres of similar size, appear in the meninges of the dorsal cortex of mice within minutes of inhaled delivery. Recovery of viable bacteria from dissected tissue and fluorescence microscopy show that up to at least 72 h, pneumococci and microspheres were predominantly found in the outer of the two meninges: the pachymeninx. No pneumococci were found in blood or cerebrospinal flui
