Dyslexia: a neuroscientific puzzle.

The initial assumptions as to the existence of neurodevelopmental disorders have been confirmed by almost a century of studies focused on the nature and causes of reading disability. Dyslexia is an umbrella term for the various manifestations of reading disabilities, each of which is related to its own complex of neuropsychological dysfunctions, sometimes accompanied by neurological symptoms that can be indicative of the specific location involved. Electro-physiology and neuro-imaging in relation to metabolic activity have also confirmed that, to some extent, there is dysfunction in various ce

[Mental adaptation disorders in duodenal ulcer patients].

Mental adptation disorders that appeared as a result of the stressogenic factor effect include two interrelated processes concurrently: processes of the development of the acute stage of ulcer (pathogenesis) and mechanisms of recovery (sanogenesis). Pathogenetic processes prevail over sanogenetic ones at the beginning of the acute stage--pains and ulcerous defects in the duodenal bulb occur more frequently in case of a mental adaptation disorder than in case of its absence. The incipient recovery (disappearance of pains and appearance of a postulcerous scar on the spot of the former ulcer) rep

Revisiting formulation: part 2. The task of addressing the concept of the unique individual. Remediating problems with formulation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical basis of addressing the concept of the unique individual, one of the tasks prescribed in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Formulation guidelines for candidates, and to propose a rational basis for remediation of the problems that many candidates and other professionals have with formulation. CONCLUSION: The difficulty that RANZCP candidates and other mental health professionals have in producing a completely integrated account of an individual is multi-determined, but is partly explainable

Trait mindfulness, psychological skills, and mental toughness in paddleboard athletes: A correlational study.

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 172 athletes. Participants completed the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28), and the Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ). Results indicated moderate-to-high levels across all study variables, with no significant gender differences observed. Trait mindfulness was positively associated with psychological regulation processes (r = 0.642), and both variables were positively associated with mental performance expression (r = 0.498). Psychological regulation processes were strongly associated

Anticipatory processing in social anxiety: two pilot studies.

Two studies investigating the cognitive processes associated with anticipatory social anxiety are reported. Study 1 used a semi-structured interview to compare high and low socially anxious individuals ( [Formula: see text] per group) in terms of their reported mental processes during periods of anticipatory social anxiety. Study 2 investigated the anxiety inducing effects of the mental processes that were shown to be characteristic of high socially anxious individuals in Study 1. Prior to giving a speech, high and low socially anxious individuals ( [Formula: see text] per group) either engage

The mirror mechanism in the parietal lobe.

The mirror mechanism is a basic mechanism that transforms sensory representations of others' actions into motor representations of the same actions in the brain of the observer. The mirror mechanism plays an important role in understanding actions of others. In the present chapter we discuss first the basic organization of the posterior parietal lobe in the monkey, stressing that it is best characterized as a motor scaffold, on the top of which sensory information is organized. We then describe the location of the mirror mechanism in the posterior parietal cortex of the monkey, and its functio

Carry on winning: the gamblers' fallacy creates hot hand effects in online gambling.

People suffering from the hot-hand fallacy unreasonably expect winning streaks to continue whereas those suffering from the gamblers' fallacy unreasonably expect losing streaks to reverse. We took 565,915 sports bets made by 776 online gamblers in 2010 and analyzed all winning and losing streaks up to a maximum length of six. People who won were more likely to win again (apparently because they chose safer odds than before) whereas those who lost were more likely to lose again (apparently because they chose riskier odds than before). However, selection of safer odds after winning and riskier o

Consciousness, information integration, and the brain.

Clinical observations have established that certain parts of the brain are essential for consciousness whereas other parts are not. For example, different areas of the cerebral cortex contribute different modalities and submodalities of consciousness, whereas the cerebellum does not, despite having even more neurons. It is also well established that consciousness depends on the way the brain functions. For example, consciousness is much reduced during slow wave sleep and generalized seizures, even though the levels of neural activity are comparable or higher than in wakefulness. To understand

Shifts in information processing level: the speed theory of intelligence revisited.

A hypothesis is proposed here to reconcile the inconsistencies observed in the IQ-P3 latency relation. The hypothesis stems from the observation that task-induced increase in P3 latency correlates positively with IQ scores. It is hypothesised that: (a) there are several parallel information processing pathways of varying complexity which are associated with the generation of P3 waves of varying latencies; (b) with increasing workload, there is a shift in the 'information processing level' through progressive recruitment of more complex polysynaptic pathways with greater processing power and in

Eye movements in reading and information processing: 20 years of research.

Recent studies of eye movements in reading and other information processing tasks, such as music reading, typing, visual search, and scene perception, are reviewed. The major emphasis of the review is on reading as a specific example of cognitive processing. Basic topics discussed with respect to reading are (a) the characteristics of eye movements, (b) the perceptual span, (c) integration of information across saccades, (d) eye movement control, and (e) individual differences (including dyslexia). Similar topics are discussed with respect to the other tasks examined. The basic theme of the re

[Features of disorders of mental activity in schizophrenics].

A comparative experimental-psychological study of characteristics of psychic activity disorders was conducted in patients of 2 nosological groups: patients with schizophrenia and patients with astheno-neurotic disturbances in neurasthenia. The authors used methods directed at the study of characteristics of involuntary and voluntary attention as the direct expression and prerequisite of the activity of psychic processes. On the basis of the experimental data, the authors attempt to develop a psychological classification of characteristics of determinant factors of changes in psychic activity o

Depersonalization in accident victims and psychiatric patients.

A transient depersonalization syndrome was identified in nearly one third of persons exposed to life-threatening danger (accident victims) and close to 40% of a group of hospitalized psychiatric patients. Although the syndrome was similar in these populations, mental clouding developed more commonly among patients and alertness was more prominent among accident victims. Anxiety was significantly associated with the development of depersonalization among psychiatric patients and was almost certainly a factor in its appearance among accident victims. The findings suggest that this syndrome is a

Spatio-temporal theta pattern dissimilarity in the right centro-parietal area during memory generalization.

Generalization across past events may guide our action in novel situations. Although generalization is a fundamental memory process, its neural underpinnings are not fully understood yet. In the present experiment, we combinedElectroencephalography(EEG) with multivariate representational similarity analysis (RSA) to examine in particular the role of spatio-temporal patterns of theta oscillations known to be important for associative memory processes, in memory generalization. We recorded EEG while healthy participants (n = 56) performed an acquired equivalence task. In this task, participants

Anxiety Sensitivity and Pain-Related Anxiety Among Sexual Assault Survivors With Hazardous Drinking and PTSD.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual violence is a major public health issue associated with poorer mental health and greater alcohol use problems. Limited work has examined the underlying constructs that may help explain risk for these outcomes among those with a history of sexual violence and probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who engage in hazardous drinking (heightened alcohol consumption that increases risk for negative consequences). METHODS: The present investigation evaluated anxiety sensitivity and pain-related anxiety as correlates of mental health and clinically significant alcohol use

The frontoparietal control system: a central role in mental health.

Recent findings suggest the existence of a frontoparietal control system consisting of flexible hubs that regulate distributed systems (e.g., visual, limbic, motor) according to current task goals. A growing number of studies are reporting alterations of this control system across a striking range of mental diseases. We suggest this may reflect a critical role for the control system in promoting and maintaining mental health. Specifically, we propose that this system implements feedback control to regulate symptoms as they arise (e.g., excessive anxiety reduced via regulation of amygdala), suc

Reconceptualizing mental disorders: From symptoms to organs.

Most mental pathologies are diagnosed on the sole basis of the symptoms reported by patients, such as "I'm feeling low." The thrust of this paper is the proposal to reconceptualize mental disorders as dysfunctions of brain subsystems. This shift from symptom to organ would bring psychiatry in line with the rest of medicine, and is analogous to the change in status of venereal infections from skin pathologies, such as chancres, to bacterial infections. The proposal in question is part of the reconceptualization of mental processes as brain processes, in line with the materialist conception of t
