Effects of Short-Term Versus Long-Term Mentalization-Based Therapy on Psychiatric Symptoms in Outpatients With Borderline Personality Disorder: Exploratory Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial.

We conducted a randomized clinical trial assessing the beneficial and harmful effects of short-term versus long-term mentalization-based therapy (MBT) for outpatients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and found no evidence of a difference on BPD symptom severity, functional impairment, quality of life, global functioning, and severe self-harm. In this paper, we assessed the effects of short-term versus long-term MBT on the exploratory outcome, psychiatric symptoms, assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Participants included the full intention-to-treat sample of th

Mentalization-based treatment versus bona fide treatment for patients with borderline personality disorder in Germany (MAGNET): study protocol of a prospective, multi-centre randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental disorder. Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is an evidence-based treatment for individuals with BPD. Specifically, MBT has previously been highlighted for its effectiveness regarding the reduction of suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Yet, randomized-controlled trials (RCT) on MBT in outpatient settings compared with bona fide treatment (BFT) are still scarce and none has been conducted in Germany. The primary objective of this RCT is to investigate whether outpatient MBT is more effective in the reduction of cr

On the research on youth mental health: A scientometric analysis across mental disorders.

In youth-i.e., adolescents and young adults-mental disorders represent a major burden on well-being and quality of life. This scientometric study aimed to map research trends concerning any mental disorder in youth. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection for studies published between 01/01/1985 and 28/08/2025, using keywords on mental disorders and youth. Co-citation reference networks were extracted. R-bibliometrix/CiteSpace were used. 65,684 studies were included, forming a well-structured co-reference network. A trend in the 1980s concerned the prevalence/outcomes of specific mental

The moderating effect of mental toughness on the relationship between stress and mental health.

INTRODUCTION: Mental toughness (MT) is increasingly recognized as a psychological resilience factor that can help individuals to cope with stress more effectively and maintain better mental health. While previous studies suggest that MT buffers the negative effects of stress, it is unclear whether these patterns are consistent across broader adult populations and multiple dimensions of mental health. METHODS: This preregistered study examined whether MT moderates the relationship between perceived stress and three indicators of mental health: depressive symptoms, the mental health component o

Examining the Mental Health of Siblings of Children with a Mental Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Mental disorders tend to cluster within families, yet the majority of research focuses on one child per family. There is a paucity of research examining the impact of a child's mental disorder on siblings. This scoping review addresses the following questions: (i) How do mental disorders in children impact the mental health of their sibling(s)? (ii) Which resources exist that address the needs of siblings of children with mental disorders? We searched eight databases for empirical studies and screened for those published since 2011. n = 27 studies were included; n = 21 studies addressed resear

Mental Health and Mental Illness in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Mental health disorders are known to correlate with poorer outcomes in orthopaedic surgery, yet research focusing on pediatric orthopaedic patients remains sparse. This study aims to evaluate publication trends on mental health within pediatric orthopaedic surgery over the past two decades. A systematic review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science identified articles published between January 1, 2003 and July 17, 2023, focusing on mental health in pediatric ortho

COVID-19, Mental Health, and Mental Health Treatment among Adults.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been widely reported to have increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. It may also have significantly disrupted continuity of treatment for existing patients and made access for those newly seeking care more difficult at a time when treatment needs are higher. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study seeks to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health status and mental health treatment among adults residing in the U.S. civilian, non-institutionalized population. METHODS: The data are drawn from the 2019-2020 Medica

Identifying people with deteriorating mental health using a mental state assessment.

Research indicates that approximately one in six people will experience a common mental health condition such as depression or anxiety, while people with severe mental illness commonly experience significant health inequalities. Nurses will come into frequent contact with people experiencing mental health issues in hospitals and in the community. Mental state assessment is a tool that enables nurses to develop an understanding of an individual's mental health that will be universally recognised across healthcare services. This article provides an outline of the various elements involved in a m

Mental health recovery: Peer specialists with mental health and incarceration experiences.

Mental health recovery has not been examined widely in individuals with mental illnesses reentering the community from correctional settings. An important component of mental health recovery is engaging in work and many with lived mental health experiences become peer support specialists, yet little is known how this process unfolds for individuals who also have incarceration histories. Using life history phenomenological interviewing, this study investigates recovery pathways for peer support specialists with incarceration histories. Findings show that experiences of hope, connectedness, iden

The mental health status of ethnocultural minorities in Ontario and their mental health care.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are a leading cause of disability and early mortality. The objective of this study was to describe and compare psychosocial indicators and mental health service use among ethnoculturally-diverse Ontarians. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of the Ontario Health Study pilot investigation. Residents were mailed an invitation to one of 3 assessment centres (urban, rural and northern sites) from March 2009 to July 2010. Participants had an interview with a nurse and completed a questionnaire on a touchscreen kiosk. The questionnaire included sociodemographic

Workplace Violence in Mental Health: A Victorian Mental Health Workforce Survey.

The international literature suggests workplace violence in mental health settings is a significant issue, yet little is known about the frequency, nature, severity and health consequences of staff exposure to violence in Australian mental health services. To address this gap, we examined these aspects of workplace violence as reported by mental health services employees in Victoria, Australia. The project used a cross-sectional, exploratory descriptive design. A random sample of 1600 Health and Community Services Union members were invited to complete a survey investigating exposure to violen

[The super extended sub-mental flap or combo sub-mental flap].

The author presents a technical variation of the sub-mental flap including in a conventional pedicled flap both sub-mental axes and their anastomoses on the midline. The assessment of the first flaps raised according to this method confirms the improvement of the distal blood supply. It allows the possibility to harvest "super extended" flaps reaching the contralateral auricular lobula. This variation can be considered as an axial flap which only the tip, located beyond the mandibular angle, is at random. The evolution of the sub-mental flap from its original description to this variation call

The impact of mental health services on arrests of offenders with a serious mental illness.

This study examines the impact of mental health services on arrests of offenders with a serious mental Illness (SMI) by assessing changes in associations between receipt of outpatient and emergency room/inpatient services and arrests one, two, and three quarters later. A variety of data sets were used for identifying 3,769 offenders who were in the Pinellas County Florida jail between 7/1/2003 and 6/30/ 2004, and 7,755 offenders who were in the Harris County Texas jail between 10/1/2005 and 9/30/2006. Mental health nurses' attitudes towards severe perinatal mental illness.

AIM: This paper reports on a study exploring the experiences and attitudes of generic mental health nurses towards care of women with severe mental illness during the perinatal period. BACKGROUND: Severe mental disorder in the perinatal period is a global public health concern. However, there are concerns that mental health nurses other than dedicated perinatal mental health teams may lack knowledge, skills and experience in caring for such disorders, because of their low prevalence. METHODS: Sixteen generic Registered Mental Nurses working in public adult mental health services participated

Social determinants of mental health: the missing dimensions of mental health nursing?

In this paper we explore how aspects of the social world may be linked to mental health and psychiatric morbidity and propose that conditions should be created which allow individuals and communities greater opportunities for self-care and self-management. Specifically the focus is on social connections, disability and homelessness and work stress. There is a clear policy direction pursued by many national governments and international organizations such as the World Bank to build healthy communities. The environment as it relates to health and well-being can be thought of in terms of physical

A high density ERP comparison of mental rotation and mental size transformation.

To compare mental rotation and mental size transformation, 128-channel EEG was recorded while subjects performed both tasks using random two-dimensional shapes as stimuli. Behavioural results showed significant linear effects of both size transformation and mental rotation on reaction times. Rotation ERPs showed experimental effects at two latencies: a bilateral component distributed over posterior parietal electrodes at a latency of approximately 232-300ms and a second component at approximately 424-492ms distributed over right anterior parietal electrodes. The latency and spatial distributio

Attitudes of mental healthcare workers towards persons with mental illness in Vietnam.

There is a shortage of research specifically examining the stigma among mental health workers toward people suffering from mental illness in Vietnam. Therefore, this study investigates the factors that are related to their attitudes. A cross-sectional study was conducted in June and July 2021. Participants were mental health staff from ten different psychiatric hospitals throughout Vietnam. Using the Mental Illness: Clinician's Attitudes Scale version 4 (MICA-4) was used to measure their stigma towards persons with mental illness. A stepwise multiple regression analysis, one-way ANOVA, post ho

Exploring individual differences in the mental rotation of hands and their links to mental health.

Past research has provided insights into mental imagery strategies applied when making judgments in same-different tasks (SDTs) and hand laterality tasks (HLT). We explored individual differences in the use of these strategies, and their relationship to anxiety and depression. University students completed an SDT and an HLT along with measures of sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), alexithymia, anxiety, and depression. Group-level results suggested the use of: a) object-based transformations in the SDT; b) visuospatial transformations for back views in the HLT, and c) motoric simulation for
