Mercury compound distribution and stable isotope composition in the different compartments of seabird eggs: The case of three species breeding in East Greenland.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant of global concern and the impact on Arctic ecosystems, particularly in seabirds, is critical due to large-scale Hg transport towards polar regions and its biomagnification in marine trophic systems. While the adverse effects of Hg on reproductive processes in seabirds are established, the understanding of Hg maternal transfer pathways and their control on Hg reproductive toxicity is limited. The combination of Hg compounds speciation (inorganic mercury and monomethylmercury MMHg) and Hg stable isotope composition in the different egg compartments (yolk, albu

Remediation of brownfields contaminated by organic compounds and heavy metals: a bench-scale test of a sulfur/vermiculite sorbent for mercury vapor removal.

In this study, we report for the first time a novel type of sorbent that can be used for mercury adsorption from the air-based off-gasses-vermiculite impregnated with alkali polysulfides and thiosulfates. In contrast to other sorbents, vermiculite exhibits superior thermal stability in air and low adsorption capacity for organic vapors. This allows for a more favorable design of the soil remediation unit-direct coupling of thermal desorber with catalytic oxidizer using air as a carrier gas. In the bench-scale test at 180 °C, the sulfur/vermiculite sorbent exhibited significantly higher efficie

Tin and mercury and their speciation (organotin compounds and methylmercury) in worldwide red wine samples determined by ICP-MS and GC-ICP-MS.

One hundred and twenty-two red wines were analysed for their total tin, total mercury and speciation concentrations. Total Sn and Hg concentrations were in average 4.4 ± 7.2 µg/L and 0.22 ± 0.12 µg/L, respectively. Two GC-ICP-MS methods were developed and validated for speciation purposes: one to measure organotin compounds (OTCs) with internal standard correction; the other, to evaluate methylmercury (MeHg+) by isotopic dilution. Methyltins (mainly dimethyltin, but also monomethyltin) were the most abundant OTCs recovered. Methylation seems to occur biotically during the wine making process a

Temporal trends in a biomagnifying contaminant: Application of amino acid compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope analysis to the interpretation of bird mercury levels.

Temporal trends in levels of biomagnifying contaminants, such as mercury (Hg), in top predators can provide insights into changes in contaminant bioavailability through time. However, interpreting contaminant temporal trends in predators can be confounded by temporal changes in their diets, which, in turn, could affect organism trophic position and exposure to biomagnifying contaminants. To address this issue, bulk stable nitrogen isotope analysis, that is, analysis of whole tissue, is widely incorporated into contaminant-monitoring programs for the estimation of organism trophic position. Diphenyl diselenide, a simple organoselenium compound, decreases methylmercury-induced cerebral, hepatic and renal oxidative stress and mercury deposition in adult mice.

Oxidative stress has been pointed out as an important molecular mechanism in methylmercury (MeHg) intoxication. At low doses, diphenyl diselenide ((PhSe)2), a structurally simple organoselenium compound, has been shown to possess antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Here we have examined the possible in vivo protective effect of diphenyl diselenide against the potential pro-oxidative effects of MeHg in mouse liver, kidney, cerebrum and cerebellum. The effects of MeHg exposure (2 mg/(kg day) of methylmercury chloride 10 ml/kg, p.o.), as well as the possible antagonist effect of diphenyl

Spatial trends in a biomagnifying contaminant: Application of amino acid compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope analysis to the interpretation of bird mercury levels.

Levels of biomagnifying contaminants are greatest in high-trophic level biota (e.g., predatory birds such as gulls). Gull eggs have been used to assess contaminant spatial patterns and sources, but such assessments must consider how organism trophic position may influence spatial inferences. Stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15 N) in bulk tissue are routinely used in this context. However, bulk δ15 N values are only useful if spatial differences in baseline δ15 N values are considered. Amino acid compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope analysis can generate estimates of baseline δ15 N values and tr

The organic mercury compounds, methylmercury and ethylmercury, inhibited ciliary movement of ventricular ependymal cells in the mouse brain around the concentrations reported for human poisoning.

Functions of the nervous system are supported by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is driven by the ciliary beating of ventricular ependymal cells. The aim of the present study was to examine whether methylmercury (MeHg), a substance with potent neurotoxicity in humans, affects the ciliary movement. The effects of another organic mercury compound, ethylmercury (EtHg), were also assessed for comparison. Toxicity of MeHg or EtHg was evaluated by measuring alterations in the ciliary beat frequency of ependymal cells lining the third ventricle of mouse brain slices. The obtained results

Removing and recovering gas-phase elemental mercury by Cu(x)Co(3-x)O(4) (0.75< or = x < or =2.25) in the presence of sulphur compounds.

The Hg(0) oxidation ability and reusability of Cu(x)Co(3-x)O(4) were investigated in an attempt to improve SO(2) anti-poisoning ability of metal oxide and produce more economic and effective sorbents for the control of Hg(0) emission from combustion processes. The influence of copper content on Cu(x)Co(3-x)O(4)'s (0.75< or = x < or =2.25) oxidation ability of Hg(0) in the presence of SO(2) was investigated. According to the X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and mass balance analysis on mercury, we found that Cu(1.5)Co(1.5)O(4) showed the highest S(BET) and best Hg(0) oxidation ab

Does mercury biomagnification in a boreal lake food web vary year-round? - A comparison using bulk δ15N and compound-specific δ15N of amino acids.

Seasonality characterises northern latitude lakes, however, limited knowledge exists regarding seasonal fluctuations in mercury (Hg) biomagnification. This study tested for these fluctuations year-round in the food web of a boreal humic lake (Lake Pääjärvi, in southern Finland) and for differences between two methods of trophic level (TL) determination. A food web sample was collected in three open-water seasons and one ice-covered season. TL was calculated using bulk nitrogen stable isotopes (δ15N) and compound-specific stable isotope analysis of δ15N in amino acids (CSIA-AA). Biomagnificatio

Compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope analysis of amino acids shows that bulk methods provide higher estimates of mercury biomagnification in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) provides a method to estimate baseline δ15N values of food chains, allowing less biased estimates of trophic positions for organisms. Greater accuracy in trophic positions can improve estimates of contaminant biomagnification. We calculated trophic positions with various CSIA-AA equations for four species of fish and northern gannets (Morus bassanus) from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We examined the effect of CSIA-AA-derived trophic positions on mercury biomagnification metrics (trophic magnification factors (TMF) and biomagnifica

New insights into the metabolism of organomercury compounds: mercury-containing cysteine S-conjugates are substrates of human glutamine transaminase K and potent inactivators of cystathionine γ-lyase.

Anthropogenic practices and recycling in the environment through natural processes result in release of potentially harmful levels of mercury into the biosphere. Mercury, especially organic forms, accumulates in the food chain. Mercury reacts readily with sulfur-containing compounds and often exists as a thiol S-conjugate, such as the l-cysteine (Cys)-S-conjugate of methylmercury (CH(3)Hg-S-Cys) or inorganic mercury (Cys-S-Hg-S-Cys). These S-conjugates are structurally similar to l-methionine and l-cystine/l-cystathionine, respectively. Bovine and rat glutamine transaminase K (GTK) catalyze tr

Immunological alterations inducible by mercury compounds. III. H-2A acts as an immune response and H-2E as an immune "suppression" locus for HgCl2-induced antinucleolar autoantibodies.

In responder mouse strains repeated injections of subtoxic doses of HgCl2 induce formation of antinuclear autoantibodies (ANA) and antinucleolar autoantibodies (ANolA). Others have shown that responsiveness to HgCl2-induced formation of ANA and ANolA is linked to H-2. Here, we extend these studies to a variety of mouse strains not tested previously. After confirming that strain B10.S (H-2s) is a high responder we have shown that strains B10.D2 (H-2d) and B10.BR (H-2k) are nonresponders. By comparing a panel of strains carrying appropriate intra-H-2 recombinant haplotypes derived from d, k and

Compound-specific stable isotopes of amino acids reveal influences of trophic level and primary production sources on mercury concentrations in fishes from the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Total mercury concentrations ([THg]) exceed thresholds of concern in some Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) tissues from certain portions of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. We applied compound-specific stable isotope analyses of both carbon and nitrogen in amino acids from fish muscle tissue to quantify the proportional contributions of primary production sources and trophic positions of eight prey species (n = 474 total) that are part of Steller sea lion diets. Previous THg analyses of fish muscle, coupled with monomethylmercury analyses of a subset of samples, substantiated previous findin

A high-efficiency decomposition method for mono and dimethylmercury induced by low-energy electron attachment (<≈7 eV): A computational insight into the decomposition mechanism of extremely toxic mercury compounds.

Dimethylmercury (DMM) and monomethylmercury (MMM) are extremely toxic and dangerous environmental contaminants. Unfortunately, there is no effective way to remove these substances from the environment. This study looks into the efficient decomposition of DMM and MMM by low-energy electrons. The calculated quantum scattering properties reveal the presence of metastable electronic states in both molecules. An examination of the spatial features of the electronic resonances, as well as the computation and characterization of the vibrational normal modes, suggests possible bond break pathways of t
