Re-emission of legacy mercury from soil adjacent to closed point sources of Hg emission.

Mercury (Hg) emissions from point sources to air may disperse over long distance depending on Hg speciation in the plume. A significant fraction of Hg, particularly in its divalent forms, deposits locally and causes pollution to surrounding biomes. The objective of this study was to investigate (1) the historic Hg deposition to the immediate vicinity of an industrial complex that had intentional use of Hg (i.e., chlor-alkali and polyvinyl chloride production) for 5 decades until 2011, and (2) the Hg0 re-emission from soil to air soon after the closure of the facility. The spatial distribution

Mercury mobility and effects in the salt-marsh plant Halimione portulacoides: Uptake, transport, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms.

The plant Halimione portulacoides, an abundant species widely distributed in temperate salt-marshes, has been previously assessed as bioindicator and biomonitor of mercury contamination in these ecosystems. The present study aims to assess uptake and distribution of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) within H. portulacoides, potential mercury release by volatilization through leaves, and toxicity and tolerance mechanisms by investigating plant photochemical responses. Stem cuttings of H. portulacoides were collected from a salt-marsh within the Tagus estuary natural protected area, a

Bioaccumulation of methylmercury within the marine food web of the outer Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine.

Mercury and methylmercury were measured in seawater and biota collected from the outer Bay of Fundy to better document mercury bioaccumulation in a temperate marine food web. The size of an organism, together with δ13 C and δ15 N isotopes, were measured to interpret mercury levels in biota ranging in size from microplankton (25μm) to swordfish, dolphins and whales. Levels of mercury in seawater were no different with depth and not elevated relative to upstream sources. The δ13 C values of primary producers were found to be inadequate to specify the original energy source of various faunas, how

Mercury methylation and hydrogen sulfide production among unexpected strains isolated from periphyton of two macrophytes of the Amazon.

The periphyton of macrophytes had previously been identified as important spots for mercury methylation in the Amazon basin, but the microorganisms that facilitate methylation in such compartment are still to be identified. Here, bacteria were isolated from periphyton associated with Eichhornia crassipes and Polygonum densiflorum in Widdel and Pfennig medium and tested for mercury methylation with a stable isotope tracer technique using (198)HgCl, hydrogen sulfide production and molybdate inhibition. Three Pleomorphomona spp., one unidentified Deltaproteobacteria, two Klebsiella spp., and one

Methylmercury measurement in whole blood by isotope-dilution GC-ICPMS with 2 sample preparation methods.

BACKGROUND: Despite its known toxicity, methylmercury is rarely measured directly in clinical studies; instead, conclusions are based on total mercury measurements. We have developed isotope-dilution-based methods for methylmercury-specific analysis of whole blood by coupled gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICPMS). METHODS: We analyzed animal and human blood samples after alkaline digestion or extraction of methylmercury into dichloromethane and back extraction into water. Methylmercury was converted to the volatile ethyl derivative, purged, and trapped on a

Generalist seabirds as biomonitors of ocean mercury: The importance of accurate trophic position assignment.

Monitoring mercury concentration in the marine environment is pivotal due to the risks that mercury intake poses to the ecosystem and human health. It is therefore of interest to make reliable, comparative measurements over large geographic areas. Here, the utility of wide-ranging generalist seabirds as mercury biomonitors at an ocean basin scale was assessed, using the Cory's Shearwater as a model species. The mercury concentration in flight feathers moulted at distant non-breeding areas of geolocator-tracked birds was quantified, reflecting contamination in various geographic areas. Compound

An experimental approach to investigate mercury species transformations under redox oscillations in coastal sediments.

This work describes a laboratory experiment designed to unravel mercury species reactivity in superficial coastal sediments oscillating between oxic and anoxic conditions. The experimental set-up has been applied to a sediment slurry from the Arcachon Bay (France) to follow the evolution of both naturally occurring (i.e. endogenous) and isotopically enriched added mercury species (i.e. exogenous, ¹⁹⁹IHg and ²⁰¹MMHg) at environmental levels. The transformation and partition between the different phases (aqueous, solid and gaseous) of the endogenous and exogenous mercury species (inorganic Hg (I

Lipid-free tuna muscle samples are suitable for total mercury analysis.

Tropical tunas are largely consumed worldwide, providing major nutritional benefits to humans, but also representing the main exposure to methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin that biomagnifies along food webs. The combination of ecological tracers (nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes, δ15N and δ13C) to mercury concentrations in tunas is scarce yet crucial to better characterize the influence of tuna foraging ecology on mercury exposure and bioaccumulation. Given the difficulties to get modern and historical tuna samples, analyses have to be done on available and unique samples. However, δ13C val

Wintering in the Western Subarctic Pacific Increases Mercury Contamination of Red-Legged Kittiwakes.

Marine methylmercury concentrations vary geographically and with depth, exposing organisms to different mercury levels in different habitats. Red-legged kittiwakes (Rissa brevirostris), a specialist predator, forage on fish and invertebrates from the mesopelagic zone, a part of the ocean with elevated methylmercury concentrations. We used kittiwakes as bioindicators of MeHg concentrations in remote mesopelagic systems by examining how wintering distribution and habitat affected kittiwakes' mercury exposure. In 2011-2017, we sampled winter-grown feathers on St. George Island, Alaska, from birds

Inter-species differences of total mercury and methylmercury in farmed fish in Southern China: Does feed matter?

China is now the largest producer of marine farmed fish and there is a considerable concern of seafood safety due to potential mercury contamination. We analyzed both the total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in nine species of commercial fish from two marine-cage farms in Southern China. 13C and 15N stable isotopes were concurrently analyzed to identify the artificial feed sources and the trophic levels of farmed fish. Mercury concentrations of all species were much lower than the human health screening values and safety limits established by different countries. Mercury

Decline in methylmercury in museum-preserved bivalves from San Francisco Bay, California.

There are ongoing efforts to manage mercury and nutrient pollution in San Francisco Bay (California, USA), but historical data on biological responses are limited. We used bivalves preserved in formalin or ethanol from museum collections to investigate long-term trends in methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and carbon and nitrogen isotopic signatures. In the southern reach of the estuary, South Bay, MeHg in the Asian date mussel (Musculista senhousia) significantly declined over the study duration (1970 to 2012). Mean MeHg concentrations were highest (218ng/g dry weight, dw) in 1975 and declin

Mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in mesopelagic biota.

This study investigated the distribution and biomagnification pathways of total mercury (THg) concentrations in three mesopelagic species in the Tasman Sea: two fish (Diaphus hudsoni, Metelectrona ventralis) and one predatory squid (Lycoteuthis lorigera). THg concentrations in muscle tissue ranged from 0.06 to 0.26 μg g-1 dry weight (DW) and were consistently higher in liver tissue (0.15-0.96 μg g-1 DW) across all species. Species-specific variations in THg bioaccumulation and the liver-to-muscle THg ratio suggested differences in mercury metabolism. Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) vari

Insights into the reduction of methylmercury accumulation in rice grains through biochar application: Hg transformation, isotope fractionation, and transcriptomic analysis.

Methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin, easily moves from the soil into rice plants and subsequently accumulates within the grains. Although biochar can reduce MeHg accumulation in rice grains, the precise mechanism underlying biochar-mediated responses to mercury (Hg) stress, specifically regarding MeHg accumulation in rice, remains poorly understood. In the current study, we employed a 4% biochar amendment to remediate Hg-contaminated paddy soil, elucidate the impacts of biochar on MeHg accumulation through a comprehensive analysis involving Hg isotopic fractionation and transcriptomic an

Validation of methylmercury determinations in aquatic systems by alkyl derivatization methods for GC analysis using ICP-IDMS.

Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS), using an inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometer (ICPMS) and a species-specific methylmercury spike was applied to validate the commonly used GC method for methylmercury (MeHg+) determination, which is based on the formation of volatile methylethylmercury by derivatizationwith NaBEt4. The spike compound, Me201Hg+, was synthesized by reaction of 201Hg-enriched mercury chloride with methylcobalamin. By analyzing different environmental aquatic samples, it was found that in most cases, transformation of MeHg+ into elemental mercury (Hg0)

In Situ Photochemical Transformation of Hg Species and Associated Isotopic Fractionation in the Water Column of High-Altitude Lakes from the Bolivian Altiplano.

Photochemical reactions are major pathways for the removal of Hg species from aquatic ecosystems, lowering the concentration of monomethylmercury (MMHg) and its bioaccumulation in foodwebs. Here, we investigated the rates and environmental drivers of MMHg photodegradation and inorganic Hg (IHg) photoreduction in waters of two high-altitude lakes from the Bolivian Altiplano representing meso- to eutrophic conditions. We incubated three contrasting waters in situ at two depths after adding Hg-enriched isotopic species to derive rate constants. We found that transformations mostly occurred in sub

Mercury anomalies and the timing of biotic recovery following the end-Triassic mass extinction.

The end-Triassic mass extinction overlapped with the eruption of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), and release of CO2 and other volcanic volatiles has been implicated in the extinction. However, the timing of marine biotic recovery versus CAMP eruptions remains uncertain. Here we use Hg concentrations and isotopes as indicators of CAMP volcanism in continental shelf sediments, the primary archive of faunal data. In Triassic-Jurassic strata, Muller Canyon, Nevada, Hg levels rise in the extinction interval, peak before the appearance of the first Jurassic ammonite, remain above back

Leaching of mercury from seal carcasses into Antarctic soils.

More than 400 seal mummies and skeletons are now mapped in the northern part of James Ross Island, Antarctica. Decomposing carcasses represent a rare source of both organic matter and associated elements for the soil. Owing to their high trophic position, seals are known to carry a significant mercury body burden. This work focuses on the extent of the mercury input from seal carcasses and shows that such carcasses represent locally significant sources of mercury and methylmercury for the environment. Mercury contents in soil samples from the surrounding areas were determined using a single-pu

Counting sulfhydryls and disulfide bonds in peptides and proteins using mercurial ions as an MS-tag.

Organic mercurial compounds are the most specific and sensitive reagents for reaction with the sulfhydryl groups (SHs) in peptides and proteins because of the strong mercury-sulfur affinity. Using the monofunctional organic mercury ion RHg(+) as a mass spectrometry (MS)-tag has the advantages of reacting with one sulfhydryl group, offering definite mass shift, and especially stable and characteristic nonradioactive isotopic distribution. Mass spectrometric analysis of derivatized sulfhydryls in peptides/proteins is thus an alternative for precisely counting the number of sulfhydryl groups and
