Merkel cell carcinoma: a systematic review of ENT presentations.

The aim of this study was to perform a systematic literature review of Merkel cell carcinomas (MCCs) originating exclusively in the ear, nose and throat (ENT) district. An appropriate string was run on PubMed to retrieve articles dealing with ENT presentations of MCC. A double cross-check was performed on citations and full-text articles found using the selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. In total, 43 articles were finally included in the study, describing 51 cases of MCC involving the ENT region: 22/51 (43%) cases involving the ear; 20/51 (39%) cases involving the mucosal sites; 9/51 (

Lateral distribution of Merkel cell carcinoma in a nationwide cohort.

BACKGROUND: The asymmetric laterality of UV-linked skin cancer, including melanoma and non- melanoma skin cancers has been identified. However, there seems to be a paucity in the data correlating the laterality and presence of Merkel cell polyoma virus (MCPyV) DNA as an aetiological factor for this phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: To study the laterality in Finnish primary Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients, and compare statistically clinicopathological variables with lateral distribution. METHODS: Data on 171 primary MCC patients and tumour characteristics; and the presence of MCPyV DNA or large T

Merkel cell carcinoma: banal-appearing, aggressive actor.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare but often deadly cutaneous malignancy. It carries a 40 percent five-year mortality rate, in contrast to 15 percent for malignant melanoma, and the incidence is increasing among older and immunosuppressed patients. Dermatologists need to be aware of the particular diagnostic and treatment challenges as the incidence increases. New data is helping to identify patients most at risk, accurately stage the tumor and to optimize treatment regimens. With the recent discovery of a virus as part of the etiology of this tumor, approaches to use the body's immune system to

Bilateral renal metastases in a case of Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. It is a highly aggressive tumor which commonly metastasizes to lymph nodes, liver, lung and bone. The diagnosis is based on histology and immunohistochemistry. Renal metastasis, with sparing of other common sites of hematogenous spread (lung and liver), is a unique feature of this case.

[Severe necrotizing myopathy subsequent to Merkel cell carcinoma].

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare tumour with a poor prognosis. Rare cases of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome have been associated with this type of tumour, namely myasthenic syndrome of Lambert-Eaton and encephalomyelitis. We report the first case of severe necrotizing myopathy with anti-Hu antibodies complicating MCC. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 58-year-old woman with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the forearm complicated by severe necrotizing myopathy associated with the presence of anti-Hu antibodies. This myopathy occurred 3 months after complete remission

Multiple primary malignancies in patients with Merkel cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare malignant cutaneous tumour, the incidence of which is increasing. Second malignancies have been reported to occur with high incidence in these patients. OBJECTIVES: We report the rate and nature of multiple malignancies in patients with MCC treated over a 10 year period in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as well as the temporal relationship of these additional malignancies to the diagnosis of MCC. RESULTS: The 27 patients had an approximately equal sex incidence with a median age at diagnosis of 79 years. Seventy percent

Merkel cell tumour of the external ear. Report of a case.

Merkel cells carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon skin lesion, considered a malignancy of the neuroendocrine system, which is found mainly in elderly people. Its incidence is highly correlated with sun exposure or immunodeficiency syndromes. MCC is often an aggressive tumour with high tendency for local recurrence, lymph node involvement and distant metastasis. To our best knowledge 20 cases originated from the auricle have been described, 2 of them arising from external ear canal. The authors report a case of the ear canal characterized by two others synchronous tumours and the occurrence of a mali

Cytokeratin 20 confirms merkel cell metastasis to stomach.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon, aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. Its prognosis is poor because of involvement of regional lymph nodes and metastases to distant sites such as bone, liver, lung, and brain. Very few metastases are reported to the gastrointestinal tract. Several studies have shown the utility of cytokeratin 20 to differentiate MCC from other small round blue cell tumors, particularly those with neuroendocrine differentiation. In this case report, we present an unusual metastasis to the stomach and the utility of cytokeratin 20 immunohistochemistry to co

Eyelid merkel cell carcinoma: report of three cases.

PURPOSE: To present three cases of Merkel cell carcinoma, a primary cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor that arises from Merkel cells, and to describe their clinical features, diagnosis, and management. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: In only one case, the disease was clinically recognized. In the others, the diagnosis was confirmed by histology, and chalazion was initially suspected in one of them. Surgery was performed in all patients, and there was no evidence of metastatic disease. CONCLUSIONS: The rarity of eyelid Merkel cell carcinoma and the fact that it can simulate benign entities freque

Merkel cell carcinoma and melanoma: etiological similarities and differences.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin and cutaneous malignant melanoma can now be compared epidemiologically through the use of population-based data not previously available for MCC. The results may provide new clues to etiology. In this study, United States data covered by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program were from nine areas of the United States (approximately 10% of the population). In 1986-1994, 425 cases of MCC were registered. The annual age-adjusted incidence per 100,000 of MCC was 0.23 for whites and 0.01 for blacks; among whites, the ratio of melanoma

Vulvar Merkel cell tumor with glandular and squamous differentiation.

A case of a Merkel cell tumor of the vulva is presented. In addition to the typical microscopic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of Merkel cell tumor, there were areas of squamous and glandular differentiation. This is the ninth reported case of a vulvar Merkel cell tumor, and the first where squamous and glandular differentiation were seen. The findings support an origin of Merkel cell tumors from pluripotential stem cells.

Merkel cell tumor in a woman with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

We describe a 69-year-old woman with basal cell carcinoma, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia who developed Merkel cell tumor. This latter malignancy first appeared as enlarged lymph nodes in the axilla and elbow regions and responded initially to radiotherapy. Later, the patient developed obstructive jaundice which was due to pancreatic metastases of the Merkel cell tumor, documented by post-mortem examination. To our knowledge, this is the first description of a Merkel cell tumor causing obstructive jaundice, in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Merkel cell tumor of the back detected during pregnancy.

Merkel cell tumor is an unusual, aggressive malignancy of skin that has been considered to be derived from cutaneous Merkel cells. We are reporting a case of Merkel cell tumor overlying the left scapula with metastases to the thoracic spine and pleura. The tumor was found incidentally in a 23-year-old pregnant black woman. The tumor recurred locally 5 months after initial wide excision. Subsequently, a second wide excision of the recurrent tumor with ipsilateral axillary dissection was performed. The course of the disease was complicated by local recurrence and formation of distant metastases

Merkel cell hyperplasia in hypertrophic varieties of actinic keratoses.

Hyperplasia and dysplasia of the epidermal neuroendocrine cells (i.e., Merkel cells, MC) have been suggested in lesional skin of actinic keratosis and chronic radiation dermatitis. Because several histological types of actinic keratosis exist, we investigated the occurrence of such MC hyperplasia according to each of the histological patterns. Using an immunoperoxidase technique and the cytokeratin monoclonal antibody CAM 5.2, we counted 0.02 CAM 5.2 + cells (i.e., MC)/mm epidermis in normal-appearing perilesional skin; 0.05 MC/mm epidermis in nonhypertrophic actinic keratoses and 4.09 MC/mm e

Merkel cell tumor of the eyelid. A clinicopathologic case report.

We treated a patient who had clinical and pathological findings of a primary cutaneous tumor of the eyelid with histological and ultrastructural features of a Merkel cell carcinoma. This neoplasm is composed of cells that are thought to be derived from the neural crest and are found normally in the skin. While it may be a low-grade malignant neoplasm, this tumor can grow rapidly and metastasize. Histologically, it can mimic a metastatic undifferentiated small-cell carcinoma from the lung or other primary sites. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case involving an eyelid.

Combined Merkel Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review.

Combined Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have classically been regarded as more aggressive than conventional, pure, Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV)-positive MCC. It is still unknown whether combined MCC and SCC are more aggressive than pure, MCPyV-negative MCC, and the origin of both the SCC and MCC elements of these combined tumors has not been elucidated. The main objective of this systematic review was to assess whether combined MCC and SCC tumors are associated with a worse prognosis than pure MCC; the secondary goals were the characterization of the clinical

Circulating Tumor Cell Detection and Polyomavirus Status in Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

The incidence of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare and highly metastatic skin malignancy, has sharply increased in the last decade. Clinical biomarkers are urgently needed for MCC prognosis, treatment response monitoring, and early diagnosis of relapse. The clinical interest of circulating tumors cells (CTCs) has been validated in many solid cancers. The aim of this study was to compare CTC detection and characterization in blood samples of patients with MCC using the CellSearch System and the RosetteSep -DEPArray workflow, an innovative procedure to enrich, detect and isolate single CTCs.
