Isospora belli infection: observation of unicellular cysts in mesenteric lymphoid tissues of a Brazilian patient with AIDS and animal inoculation.

We describe the finding of unizoic cysts of Isospora belli in lymphoid tissues of a Brazilian patient with AIDS, and discuss the possibilities of their drug resistance, they being the cause of relapses, and of being an indication for the existence of intermediary or paratenic animal hosts.

Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) of the pancreas with invasive cancer misdiagnosed as a mesenteric cyst for 12 years: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: An intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm (ITPN) depicts a distinct entity in the subgroup of premalignant epithelial tumors of the pancreas. Due to the rarity of ITPN, information regarding the disease is currently limited. We present herein a case of pancreatic ITPN with invasive cancer that was misdiagnosed as a mesenteric cyst during a 12-year follow-up period. CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old female initially presented with an incidental asymptomatic 4-cm retroperitoneal cystic lesion in 2005. For 12 years of surveillance, the lesion remained largely unchanged in size (4-5 cm). In

Confluence of Challenges: A Case Report of Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome Coexisting With Depressive Illness, Severe Weight Loss, and an Incidental Adnexal Cyst.

In the case of a 24-year-old woman experiencing depressive illness, weight loss, vomiting, and hypoglycemia, initial suspicion of gastroenteritis shifted to reveal compensated metabolic acidosis and electrolyte imbalances. A subsequent CT scan revealed both superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome and an incidental adnexal cyst, leading to treatment involving electrolyte correction and laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy, ultimately facilitating her recovery.

Management of a Rare Case of Superior Mesenteric Artery Aneurysm Associated with a Pancreatic Cyst Complicated by Acute Rupture: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Superior mesenteric artery aneurysms are a rare pathology, and rupture due to a pancreatic cyst in the context of alcohol-induced pancreatitis is an even rarer condition. The first line of treatment is usually an endovascular approach. We present the case of a 51-year-old male with alcohol-induced pancreatitis, diagnosed with a superior mesenteric artery aneurysm with active bleeding in close contact with a large pancreatic cyst. A covered stent was used to treat this condition. The patient developed hemorrhagic shock 12 h after the procedure and an urgent laparotomy was performed. A second ru

Laparoscopic Management of Multiple Liver, Omental, Mesenteric, Peritoneal, and Round Ligament Hydatid Cysts-A Rare Report of a Case and a Systematic Literature Review.

Hydatid cyst disease is a parasitic ailment with an endemic nature, predominantly affecting geographical areas with a tradition in animal husbandry. The most common localization of hydatid disease is in the liver (60%), followed by the lungs, with other organ localizations comprising less than 10%. The surgical approach to this condition can be carried out through open surgery or laparoscopy. The coexistence of hepatic and intraperitoneal hydatidosis often leads to the preference for open surgery. We performed a literature review aiming to retrieve data regarding demographic characteristics, c

Posterior bladder-associated pelvic cystic lesion with histologic features consistent with mesenteric cyst in an infant with a functionally solitary kidney: a diagnostic uncertainty case report.

BACKGROUND: Posterior bladder-associated pelvic cystic lesions in male infants are diagnostically challenging, particularly when congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract coexist. Deep pelvic cystic lesions may mimic mesenteric cyst, bladder duplication, bladder diverticulum, ectopic ureter-related pathology, seminal vesicle cyst, or Zinner-spectrum malformation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a male infant born at 39 weeks' gestation with severe right kidney atrophy, a functionally solitary left kidney with hydroureteronephrosis, a posterior bladder-associated pelvic cystic lesion,

A giant monocular intra-abdominal CSF pseudocyst mimicking mesenteric cyst in a shunted child with spina bifida and hydrocephalus: A case report of diagnostic challenge and surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pseudocysts are even extremely rare but potentially serious complications of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts, with an incidence reported between 1 % and 4.5 % in pediatric populations. When pseudocysts mimic mesenteric cysts or present atypically, diagnostic confusion and delayed treatment may occur, especially in patients with comorbid conditions like spina bifida and hydrocephalus. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 10-year-old male born with spina bifida who underwent early back closure and later developed communicating hydrocephalus requiring V

Successful enucleation of retroperitoneal cyst.

Retroperitoneal mesenteric cyst is a rare entity among the other mesenteric cysts and intra-abdominal tumours. A 42-year-old woman reported with pain abdomen off and on since one month. There were no other complaints. On ultrasonography a mesenteric cyst was diagnosed. Surgery was planned which revealed a retroperitoneal mesenteric cyst. Enucleation of the cyst was done. In follow-up of 6 months patient is asymptomatic. We are reporting a rarely reported retroperitoneal mesenteric cyst in the mesentery of the descending colon or sigmoid.

Novel diagnosis of mesenteric endometrioma: Case report.

RATIONALE: Mesenteric cysts are benign gastrointestinal cystic lesions, with an incidence of <1/100 000. They usually develop in the small bowel mesentery, mesocolon (24%), retroperitoneum (14.5%), and very rarely originate from the sigmoid mesentery. Endometriomas represent a localized type of endometriosis and are usually within the ovary. Our case is unique because there are no reports in the literature of endometrial mesenteric cysts. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 29-year-old woman who underwent a routine gynecologic control. DIAGNOSIS: Clinical examination and imaging identif

Volvulus of small intestine: rare complication of mesenteric pseudocyst.

OBJECTIVE: Mesenteric cyst is a rare intra-abdominal lesion. Most patients with mesenteric cysts are asymptomatic. Symptomatic mesenteric cysts are associated with cyst size, cyst location, and complications, including infection, rupture, hemorrhage, and intestinal obstruction. Volvulus is a rare complication of mesenteric cyst. SUBJECT: We report a 50-year-old woman with colicky epigastric pain for three days. The symptoms exacerbated in the supine position and were relieved in the sitting position. Computed tomography of her abdomen revealed a huge cystic lesion with a whirl sign of mesente

The Multi-Detector CT findings of giant abdominal lymphangiectasis mimicking a mesenteric cystic mass in a patient with midgut volvulus.

Our purpose is to show the Multi-Detector CT (MDCT) findings of an intra-abdominal giant cystic lesion with midgut volvulus and to share our experience with giant lymphangiectasis mimicking a mesenteric cyst or a cystic mass. The pathological evaluation indicated that the cyst contained abdominal lymphatic material. Malrotation is usually detected in infants and children, but rarely in adults. In patients with chronic and recurrent volvulus, chronic venous congestion with lymphatic engorgement may occur. Interference with lymphatic drainage may result in formation of a lymphangioma or a chylou

Chylolymphatic Cyst of Mesentery of Terminal Ileum: A Case Report in 8 Year-old Boy.

Mesenteric cysts are rare benign intra peritoneal tumor and more than half of the mesenteric cysts involve the mesentery of the terminal ileum. We present 8 year-old boy, who presented with features of acute intestinal obstruction. Ultrasonography (USG) of the abdomen revealed a cystic mass in the peritoneal cavity with dilated loops of bowel. Exploration of the abdomen revealed a solitary cyst of the mesentery of the terminal ileum measured 10 x 8 cm. There was twisting of the part of the ileum (volvulus) due to the cyst. It also involved the wall and lumen of the adjacent ileum and there wer

[Giant Meckel's diverticulum presenting as tumor].

The authors report a case of giant Meckel's diverticulum, presenting as a subumbilical abdominal mass, associated with an infectious picture and anemia in a 16 month-old boy. Epidemiologic, pathologic and clinical features of this rare disorder are reviewed as are the diagnostic means. The differential diagnosis with other cystic masses of the umbilical area (omphalo-mesenteric duct cyst, urachal cyst, mesenteric cyst, duplication) is discussed.

An accidental finding of a giant intra-abdominal mass.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal tumours often found incidentally on imaging studies or during surgery. The clinical presentation is various with most subjects being asymptomatic, but complications can occur such as torsion, rupture, hemorrhage or obstruction of nearby structures. The etiology of mesenteric cysts remains uncertain. Complete surgical resection is preferred, although there are no specific guidelines concerning optimal treatment strategy. CASE REPORT: We present a 61-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent a routine abdominal ultrasound e

Laparoscopic Treatment of a Retroduodenopancreatic Endometriotic Cyst Observed Postpartum.

Endometriosis occurs in 5%-10% of fertile women, usually in the pelvic region, such as the ovaries, uterine ligaments, pelvic peritoneum, and rectovaginal septum. A mesenteric endometriotic cyst is an exceptional observation and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We report a case of a large mesenteric endometriotic cyst treated by laparoscopy. A 21-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted as an emergency to our Academic Hospital on the 30th day postpartum for abdominal pain and a palpable epigastric mass. A CT scan revealed a mass measuring 7.5 × 5.5 cm showing a fluid content, located below t

The updated Swiss guidelines for the treatment and follow-up of cutaneous melanoma.

Mesenteric and retroperitoneal cysts are rare intra-abdominal tumours with an incidence of 1/140.000 in surgery departments and 1/20.000 in paediatric departments. There are no pathognomonic signs or symptoms for the cysts. In the differential diagnosis lymphangiomas, sarcomas, adenocarcinomas and intestinal duplications should be considered. Diagnostic includes abdominal computed tomography, ultrasound and MRI. Barium enema examination or intravenous pyelogram may be used in special cases. Surgical treatment is indicated also in asymptomatic patients; laparoscopic approach is the "gold standa

Ultrasound and differential diagnosis of fetal abdominal cysts.

The present study aimed to investigate the use of ultrasound and differential diagnosis to diagnose a fetal abdominal cyst. A retrospective analysis of 41 cases of fetal abdominal cyst, which included ovarian cysts, choledochal cysts, intestinal duplication and mesenteric cysts, was performed. Imaging characteristics of various types of cysts were summarized, compared and discussed. Among 41 fetal abdominal cyst cases, there were 21 cases of ovarian cysts, 11 cases of bile duct cyst, six cases of intestinal duplication and three cases of mesenteric cyst. Each type of fetal cyst had its own dis

Chylolymphatic cyst as a rare cause of acute intestinal obstruction in infants.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chylolymphatic cysts are benign pathology in lymphatic vessels due to obstruction in the lymphatic system. Their incidence is still unknown. However, they account for approximately 3 % to 9 % of all pediatric lymphangiomas. Most of these lesions are asymptomatic and are discovered accidentally. They can present with non-specific abdominal pain, vomiting and changes in bowel habits. Rarely, Chylolymphatic cysts can cause fatal complications such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus or even torsion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-month-old male presented to our unit with man

Traumatic rupture of hydatid cyst with unusual localization without liver involvement: a case report.

Primary hydatid disease of the intestinal mesentery is rare. We report on a 12-year-old male patient who presented with abdominal pain and urticaria lesions after blunt abdominal trauma. At laparotomy the cyst was found to be ruptured and was totally removed from the surrounding mesenteric tissue. The postoperative course was uneventful. This case is the first child reported with traumatic rupture of a hydatid cyst in a mesenteric location.
