Despite intensive research efforts, progress in the development of effective anti-Fasciola hepatica vaccine has not been satisfactory. However, it has been found that cysteine proteinases of F. hepatica are very important candidates for a vaccine antigen because of their role in fluke biology and in the host-parasite relationship. In our previous experiments we found that recombinant cysteine proteinase which we have cloned from adult F. hepatica (CPFhW) can protect rats against the liver fluke infection when administered intramuscularly or when given intranasally in the form of cDNA. This study aimed to investigate the infection patterns, host-parasite interactions, distribution ranges, and control diseases by Posthodiplostomum metacercariae in freshwater fish on a global scale. We analyzed parasitological data from 203 freshwater fish species across 17 orders and 44 families, predominantly representing the Leuciscidae and Cichlidae families. The analysis identified a total of 10 Posthodiplostomum metacercariae species, although several studies did not identify the parasites to the species level. In host fish, prevalence, intensity and abundance levels of Posthodiplostomum

Trematode taxonomy is mainly based on the morphological traits of adults. The identification of metacercariae is challenging because such traits are not developed in larval forms, and they even may show some level of morphological variability. Studies testing the potential correspondence between morphological differences and genetic variation of parasites are still lacking. The metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum minimum are probably the diplostomids more widely distributed in North and Middle American freshwater fish, and their intraspecific morphological variability has been attributed to the

Digenean trematodes have complex life cycles and control of these flatworms can be accomplished by eliminating immature parasite stages from intermediate hosts. In aquaculture systems, presence of trematode metacercariae can negatively impact fish health and lead to economic losses. Posthodiplostomum minimum is a parasite of birds that uses bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) as the intermediate host and is commonly found in fish used to stock waterways for recreational purposes. In this study, we evaluated killing of P. minimum metacercariae by injectable praziquantel in naturally infected

Chemotherapy of food-borne trematodes relies on two drugs, praziquantel and tricabendazole, and there is growing interest in finding alternative therapies. Plant oil extracts have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine as sources of bioactive compounds with antiparasitic activity. Species of the genus Echinostoma are used as good models to test effective compounds against food-borne trematodes. This study evaluated the anthelmintic activity of crude artesunate extracts in vitro on newly excysted metacercariae of Echinostoma paraensei by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The

The tegumental surface of a new strigeid metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp., which is a parasite of the freshwater fish Channa gachua (Hamilton) in central Vietnam, is described for the first time using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In addition to the general tegumental surface in various parts of the body, details of the surface of the suckers, lappets and holdfast organ are presented, as are variations in the form and distribution of the body spines. As good taxonomic criteria are few in diplostomoid metacercariae at both specific and generic levels, a number of the

Clinostomum is a genus of parasitic trematodes found worldwide, infecting a wide range of hosts, including freshwater fishes, snails, birds and occasionally humans. In this study, clinostomid metacercariae were collected from Nile tilapia raised in fish farms in the Upper Tana River region, Kenya. The prevalence of infection was 17.2%, with metacercariae infecting the skin, gills and buccal cavity of the fish. Using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular methods targeting both nuclear ribosomal (ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2) and mitochondrial (COI) regions, the metacercariae we

South African clinids are a major component of the temperate intertidal regions that are also known to participate in life cycles and transmission of several groups of parasites. However, the knowledge of trematode diversity of these fishes is incomplete. In this study, two species of Clinus Cuvier, the super klipfish Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus) and the bluntnose klipfish Clinus cottoides Valenciennes, were collected from six localities along the South African coast and examined for the presence of trematodes. Metacercariae of Cardiocephaloides Sudarikov, 1959 were found in the eye vitreou

AIMS: Clinostomid metacercariae infect a wide range of freshwater fish species, posing a zoonotic risk to human health when consumed raw or undercooked, potentially leading to Halzoun disease. Although these parasites are generally considered a health threat in Asian countries, they are also present in various regions of Türkiye and have been found in 12 different freshwater fish species commonly consumed in local cultures. However, their presence has not been reported in the endemic Anatolian fish, Alburnus escherichii. This study aims to determine the presence of clinostomid species in A. es

Eosinophil degranulation plays a crucial role in tissue inflammatory reactions associated with helminth parasitic infections and allergic diseases. Paragonimus westermani, a lung fluke causing human paragonimiasis, secretes a large amount of cysteine proteases, which are involved in nutrient uptake, tissue invasion, and modulation of hos's immune responses. There is, however, limited information about the response of eosinophils to direct stimulation by cysteine proteases (CP) secreted by P. westermani. In the present study, we tested whether degranulation and superoxide production from human

Clinostomum Leidy, 1856 is a cosmopolitan genus of digenean trematodes whose metacercariae commonly infect freshwater fishes and amphibians as second intermediate hosts. In South America, the diversity and taxonomy of Clinostomum metacercariae remain poorly understood, due in part to the morphological similarity of larval stages and the scarcity of molecular data. This study provides the first integrative evidence of two phylogenetically distinct Clinostomum lineages infecting the callichthyid catfish Hoplosternum littorale (Hancock, 1828) (Siluriformes: Callichthyidae), a benthic catfish of c

Comparative ultrastructural studies have been made of newly excysted metacercariae and worms recovered from abnormal (rats) and normal definitive hosts (dogs). Worms from rats survived for prolonged periods without any growth or development in muscles of the host. They appeared to resemble metacercariae in general features, although ultrastructural observations revealed differences in the composition of tegumental granules and the development of the excretory bladder and caeca. Worms from dogs showed well-developed morphology in association with active energy metabolism and biosynthesis.

Metacercariae of various species within the genus Holostephanus Szidat, 1936 (Trematoda: Digenea: Cyathocotylidae) occur in muscles of both farmed and wild fish, including common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758). The life cycle includes a snail as first intermediate host, fish as second intermediate host and birds or mammals as final hosts. We studied the zoonotic potential and the viability of Holostephanus metacercariae from common carp following exposure to various physical and chemical treatments. Muscle tissue samples of common carp specimens from a fish farm in the north-eastern par

This study is a contribution to the molecular taxonomy and epidemiology of heterophyid (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) metacercariae found in the muscle of Mugilidae (Osteichthyes) from Sardinia (western Mediterranean Sea). Sixty specimens of mugilids (13 Chelon labrosus, 18 Liza aurata, 6 Liza ramada, 8 Liza saliens, 15 Mugil cephalus) were examined and 17,899 metacercariae isolated in 95 % of the hosts. Four types of metacercariae were identified: Heterophyes sp. (n = 14,113), Heterophyes sp. -small (1225), Stictodora sp. (1606), and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) sp. (955). The experimental infection of

Even in the relatively well-characterized faunas of the developed world, it is difficult to discriminate species of metacercariae in the Diplostomidae using morphology, infection site or host use. The taxonomy, diversity and ecology of diplostomids infecting freshwater fishes in the African continent are particularly poorly known, but recent morphometric and genetic studies have revealed four species of diplostomids in the eyes and brains of siluriform fishes. In the present study, diplostomid metacercariae were collected from the eyes of 288 fish comprising two species within the Cyprinidae (
