Metal fume fever (MFF) is a work-related disease caused by the inhalation of metal particles, including zinc oxide. Chronic asthma may develop as a long-term consequence of exposure, particularly for welders and metal workers who are most at risk. In this study, we investigated the effects of ZnO fume inhalation on multiple inflammation-related cytokine- and cytokine receptor genes in mice from lung and lymph node samples, to explore the role of these in the pathogenesis of MFF. In our experiments, the animals were treated with a sub-toxic amount of ZnO fume for 4 h a day for 3 consecutive day

Beryllium is a metal responsible for the incidence of chronic beryllium disease--an illness affecting from 2 to 5% of workers exposed to this metal and its compounds. There is a growing evidence provided by epidemiological and toxicological studies that exposure limits for workers dealing with beryllium should be revised. This paper gathers epidemiological and pathological data particularly on chronic beryllium toxicity and carcinogenesis. It also reviews the most important aspects of beryllium toxicology and explains the mechanisms of its effect on humans. In addition, the paper presents sugg

The professional spectrum was analysed in 898 patients with ascertained alveolitides and lung fibroses. Most frequent were fibroses in occupations from agriculture and forestry (167 = 18.6%). Then followed workers in metal (119 = 13.3%), commerce and supply (69 = 7.7%), transport (46 = 5.1%), economic management (46 = 5.1%), building trade (42 = 4.7%) and textile workers (34 = 3.8%). The proportion of the other professional branches was lower than 3.5%. Close connections between disease and profession were seen in the employees in agriculture. The group is formed above all by farmer's lungs (e

Electronic waste (E-waste) recycling is a rapidly growing occupation in the USA with the potential for elevated exposure to flame retardants and metals associated with electronic devices. We previously measured polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plasma from E-waste workers and found them similar to non-E-waste workers. This study focused on structurally related PBDE derivatives, the hydroxylated (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated (MeO-PBDEs) forms along with metals known to occur in E-waste. Humans can metabolize PBDEs and some MeO-PBDEs into OH-PBDEs, which is a concern due to greater health

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is used extensively in various industries. Because of its solubility in water, TCE also is often found in contaminated groundwater and drinking water. TCE is not only an occupational health issue but also a public health concern. This article focuses on the scientific literature of TCE and cancer. Included in this article are epidemiologic studies from the United States and Europe of TCE manufacturing workers, metal polishers and platers, aerospace manufacturing and maintenance workers, and jewelry workers who used TCE. Also included are several recent studies from Taiw

Heavy metals generated from e-waste have created serious health risks for residents in e-waste disposal areas. This study assessed how airborne toxic metals from an e-waste dismantling park (EP) influenced surrounding residential areas after e-waste control. PM2.5, PM10, and total suspended particles (TSP) were sampled from 20 sites, including an EP, residential areas, and an urban site; ten kinds of metals were analyzed using ICP-MS and classified as PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10-100. Results showed that metals at the EP tended to be in coarser particles, while metals from residential areas tende

Platinum (Pt) salts are potent occupational allergens in precious metal refineries and catalyst productions. The threshold limit value of 2000 ng soluble Pt/m3 enforced in many countries has been questioned because there is still a high incidence of Pt salt allergy. The objective of the present case series is to define the predictive value of biological monitoring by relating Pt in the serum of catalyst production workers and control subjects to sensitization to Pt salts as assessed by skin prick testing. A total of 38 Pt measurements were taken from sera of six workers investigated several ti

Metal fume pollutants of urban Kano, a city of over 10 million people, and widespread metal works have increased exposure with related health effects. Few data on metal fume toxicity and atmospheric levels have been documented in Nigeria and Kano in particular. Hence, the work was aimed at evaluating the metal fume toxicity to laboratory rat species for setting the permissible limit of exposure in urban Kano. The investigation involved the collection of metal welding fumes and subsequent laboratory analysis. Experimental animals were then exposed intratracheally to varying doses of the fumes w

BACKGROUND: We sub-divided a cohort of 6820 workers at the Paducah (KY) Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) which was traced from 1953 to 2003. The subdivisions were made to assess the mortality risks in a sub-group of workers employed solely during the plant's refit period, a time of suspected higher exposure to metal dusts (nickel, arsenic, chromium and uranium) and trichloroethylene.
METHODS: This article describes a comparison of exposures and causes of death for 754 workers employed exclusively during the period of 1975-1979, with 1554 workers who worked in this period as well as other years.

In workers employed in the aluminum industry, the main harmful production factor is exposure to fluoride salts, which can cause chronic fluoride intoxication. For the assessment of the impact of chronic fluoride intoxication on the development of atherosclerosis, we conducted a comprehensive survey of 87 aluminum-metal makers with chronic fluoride intoxication and 43 aluminum-metal makers without occupational diseases, mean age--52.1 ± 0.4 years. There were considered the presence and severity of atherosclerosis of brachiocephalic arteries, and the arteries of the lower extremities in the stud

As part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health health hazards evaluation, workers employed in a precious metal refinery exposed to platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and other group VIII metallic salts were evaluated for direct skin test sensitivity to Pt. Current (107) and former (30) workers who quit or were discharged because of Pt-related health problems were prick tested with ammonium hexachloroplatinate ([NH4]2 PtCl6). Of the 107 currently exposed workers, 15 (14%) exhibited positive skin tests, as indexed by immediate reactivity at a dose of 10(-3) gm/ml or less. Eight (

We evaluated whether restrictive lung function among asbestos-exposed individuals with pleural fibrosis was caused by radiographically inapparent parenchymal inflammation and/or parenchymal fibrosis. All 24 study participants were sheet metal workers who were nonsmokers with normal parenchyma on posteroanterior chest radiograph. These subjects had either normal pleura (n = 7), circumscribed plaques (n = 9), or diffuse pleural thickening (n = 8). After controlling for age, years in the trade, and pack-years of smoking, we found that sheet metal workers with diffuse pleural thickening had a lowe

BACKGROUND: In the process of heavy metals refining, workers are first of all exposed to metals, metalloids (As, Se) and their compounds. Moreover, they are exposed to sulphuric acid and dusts (about 2% SiO2).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several dozen workers in two Polish plants were studied (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ag refining processes, production of Ni sulphate and production of Se). Cd, Ni, Se, Cu, Pb, As and Ag were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite tube, whereas ZnO (as Zn) by AAS with air-acetylene flame. Sulphuric acid was determined by the method given in PN-91

Twenty-six workers were studied (9 chrome-platers exposed to chromium dioxide and 17 workers exposed to metallic chromium dust) in order to investigate the macroscopic and cytological changes of the nasal mucosa due to exposure to water-soluble hexavalent chromium or to metallic chromium dust in the electroplating industry and the role of different valencies in the onset of nasal disease. Experimental and epidemiological data have shown that hexavalent chromium, which has strong oxidative power, induces more noticeable toxic effects on tissues and mucous membranes than other compounds. OBJECTIVE: The significance of measuring Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) has grown, particularly in monitoring respiratory diseases like asthma. FeNO levels indicate inflammation and a rise in response to respiratory irritants. This study investigates whether repeated exposure to irritants in metal casting and coating leads to respiratory inflammation and assesses the benefits of including FeNO measurement in periodic occupational health screenings.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 99 workers aged 18-65 in the foundry and metal coating sectors in the İkitelli Organized Indu

INTRODUCTION: In a previous analysis of a case-control study of testicular cancer nested in a cohort of automobile workers, we observed an increased risk for testicular cancer among workers who had ever been involved in occupational metal-cutting tasks. We investigated whether this risk increase was due to exposure to metal-working fluids (MWF).
METHODS: Occupational exposure to MWF was assessed in detail using a job-specific questionnaire for metal-cutting work. We calculated ORs and associated 95% CIs individually matched for age (±2 years) and adjusted for a history of cryptorchidism by co
