[From program to metaphor--managing the needs of children in a separation or divorce process involving their parents].

In German-speaking regions there are several independent intervention programs, derived from concepts originating in the USA, which are designed to assist children whose parents are separated or divorced. Two of these programs will be presented here. Consistent with the thematic implication that divorce entails trauma and stress, the childrens' need of advice and help is placed at the conceptual center of the intervention. This results in a behavioral-cognitive training program, which should enable children to overcome the stress of their situation. In contrast to these two programs, an unders

Disturbances in identity and self-regulation in bulimia nervosa: implications for a metaphorical perspective of "body as self".

This study investigates a metaphorical account of bulimia that proposes that bulimics lack a clearly defined sense of self, and subsequently utilize their physical bodies as a means of self-definition and regulation. Three major aspects of this perspective were assessed: identity disturbance; use of the binge and purge as means of emotional regulation; and sensitivity to interpersonal contact. Differences among bulimics, binge eaters, and normal controls were explored. Bulimics reported greater amounts of identity confusion, enmeshment, and overall instability in self-concept than normal contr

"Waking up" the sleeping metaphor of normality in connection to intersex or DSD: a scoping review of medical literature.

The aim of the study is to encourage a critical debate on the use of normality in the medical literature on DSD or intersex. For this purpose, a scoping review was conducted to identify and map the various ways in which "normal" is used in the medical literature on DSD between 2016 and 2020. We identified 75 studies, many of which were case studies highlighting rare cases of DSD, others, mainly retrospective observational studies, focused on improving diagnosis or treatment. The most common use of the adjective normal was in association with phenotypic sex. Overall, appearance was the most com

Working memory and vocabulary knowledge sustain activation of the literal meaning of metaphors during sentence comprehension.

Metaphors convey meanings beyond their literal interpretation, requiring individuals to rely on linguistic and cognitive resources beyond those used for literal language. Models of metaphor comprehension propose different routes to deriving metaphorical content. The indirect-access model suggests that literal meaning is accessed first and then rejected if context demands, whereas the direct-access model argues that metaphorical content is retrieved automatically without an initial literal interpretation. However, previous research has yielded mixed findings on this issue. We examine whether in

Memetic/Metaphorical Digital Twins: Extending Knowledge Co-Creation Across Economics, Architecture, and Beyond.

This article introduces Memetic/Metaphorical Digital Twins (MDTs) as a novel extension of Digital Twin typologies by twinning conceptual schemes, complementing Industrial, Human, and Cognitive Digital Twins. MDTs embed cultural, organizational, and semiotic knowledge into digital frameworks, enabling the recombination and evolution of knowledge structures across disciplines. Drawing on Schlaile's economic perspectives and Mavromatidis's architectural lens of entropy and constructal thermodynamics, this study demonstrates how MDTs can address systemic challenges in communication, knowledge tran

Speaking through art: co‑creating visual metaphors as conversation cards for chronic pain care.

BACKGROUND: The experience of living with chronic pain is difficult to understand and discuss in clinical communication, especially in the context of the strong biomedical orientation in Western healthcare. This article discusses how research on metaphors in chronic pain discourses was used to develop conversation cards with pictorial renditions of images describing pain, in collaboration with healthcare professionals and patients. With these cards, we aim to provide a support tool to more comprehensively discuss the lived experience of chronic pain in clinical communication. METHODS: We cond

Clinicians' use of metaphoric language in conversations with families of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVES: During conversations with families of critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs), clinicians' metaphoric language use may facilitate families' understanding, but also has potential drawbacks. We sought to obtain insights regarding how ICU clinicians use metaphors regarding patients' disease and treatment trajectory. METHODS: We identified clinicians' metaphor use in N=101 audio-recorded neonatal, pediatric, and adult ICU family conversations about life-sustaining treatments. Using qualitative content analyses, each metaphor's semantic domain, disease phase, and dialogi

"And Then It Spreads": contagion and disease as metaphors of sociomoral contamination in Charles Burns' graphic novel Black Hole.

This article attempts to demonstrate how Charles Burns' graphic novel Black Hole (1995) construes the prevalence of contagion and pathological transformation(s) as metaphors of social contamination operating within a biopolitics of segregation. Through a study of plague, infection and strange mutations in Burns' novel, this article offers a critical evaluation of the monstrous body and investigates how Black Hole portrays the social reception of a sexually contagious virus through conditions of sickness and exclusion, which become biopolitical in quality. It examines, through close reading, ho

Metaphors of War in Effective and Ineffective Coping of Medical Directors of COVID-19 Wards in Public Hospitals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged medical professionals worldwide with an unprecedented need to provide care under conditions of complexity, uncertainty, and danger. These conditions, coupled with the unrelenting stress of overwhelming workloads, exhaustion, and decision-making fatigue, have forced clinicians to generate coping mechanisms. This qualitative study explored the use of metaphors as a coping mechanism by clinical directors of COVID-19 wards in Israeli public general hospitals while they were exposed to death and trauma throughout the pandemic's first wave in Israel (March to Jun

In-vitro metaphors: ART beneficiaries' meaning-making about human embryos in the context of IVF in Portugal.

This article proposes a metaphorical approach to the meaning-making of Portuguese assisted reproductive technology (ART) beneficiaries about human embryos created in vitro, based on the analysis of 30 in-depth interviews. This article draws from an ongoing research project on expert and lay definitions of human embryos developed in vitro, both in ART and scientific research. Four metaphors were identified in patients' utterances about the embryo's status and attributes: embryos are possibilities of success of treatment; utilities that can be the object of ownership and dispositional control; p

Immobility, battles, and the journey of feeling alive: women's metaphors of self-transformation through depression and recovery.

Australian mental health services have responded to the problem of depression by adopting an early intervention and recovery orientation. Using qualitative research conducted in Australia with 80 women aged 20 to 75 years, we examine how participants invoked particular metaphors to construct meaning about the gendered experience of depression and recovery. We argue that women's stories of recovery provide a rich source of interpretive material to consider the everyday metaphors of recovery beyond clinical notions and linear models of personal change. We identified key metaphors women drew on t

Stigma, deforming metaphors and patients' moral experience of multibacillary leprosy in Sobral, Ceará State, Brazil.

In response to the call for a new Science of Stigma, this anthropological study investigates the moral experience of patients diagnosed with severe multibacillary leprosy. From 2003 to 2006, fieldwork was conducted in the so-called 'United-States-of-Sobral', in Ceará State, Northeast Brazil. Sobral is highly endemic for leprosy, despite intensified eradication efforts and a 30% increase in primary care coverage since 1999. Of 329 active leprosy cases at two public clinics, 279 multibacillary patients were identified and six information-rich cases selected for in-depth ethnographic analysis, ut

Metaphorical use of "headache" and "migraine" in media: A longitudinal study of 1.3 million articles in major publications.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatization and trivialization of headache confront individuals with headache disorders, but the degree to which media may contribute is incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to quantify the frequency of disparaging metaphorical use of the words "headache" and "migraine" in articles and summaries of major publications. METHODS: This longitudinal study analyzed a dataset of 1.3 million articles and summaries written by authors and editors of 38 major publications. Data cover written publications from 1998 up to 2017. The use of the words "headache"

The Road Less Traveled: How COVID-19 Patients Use Metaphors to Frame Their Lived Experiences.

Metaphor provides an important intellectual tool for communication about intense disease experiences. The present study aimed to investigate how COVID-19-infected persons metaphorically frame their lived experiences of COVID-19, and how the pandemic impacts on their mental health burden. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 patients afflicted with COVID-19. Metaphor analysis of patient narratives demonstrated that: (1) COVID-19 infection impacted patient conceptualization of themselves and the relationship between the "self" and the body, as well as social relationships.

Fake news and the seven sins of capital: a metaphorical analysis of vices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health crises spawn "sins" and moral deformities in society that are evident when they emerge but had seemed to be dormant to collective awareness before. Through the metaphor of the seven capital sins, the article analyzes the phenomenon of fake news in the social media and in the scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic: the lust of sensationalism through the seduction and exploitation of vulnerabilities associated with fear of death; gluttony for confirmatory contents that spread untruths in the attempt to turn versions into facts; the catechism of denialism, fueling wrath or hate in restrictive e

'I don't live in my body somehow': metaphorical talk in women's accounts of vaginismus and dyspareunia.

Vaginismus and dyspareunia are common sexual difficulties; they often take a long time to be appropriately diagnosed, and their origins remain unclear. This paper examines the metaphors used by women to describe bodily experiences associated with vaginismus and dyspareunia, and highlights the contribution this form of analysis can make to the study of sexuality and sexual difficulties. A secondary analysis was conducted on primary data from biographic interviews exploring women's experiences of sexual pain and difficulties with sexual intercourse. Metaphor analysis was used to analyse a data s

Combining Alcohol with Benzodiazepines or Psychostimulants. Metaphoric Meanings and the Concept of Control in the Online Talk of Polydrug Use.

The co-administration of different substances is a widespread practice in the context of hard drug use. Among others, alcohol combined with certain substances produces potentially dangerous interactions. This article explores how people who combine alcohol with benzodiazepines or psychostimulants perceive these practices and how they share their perceptions in Finnish and Swedish online discussions. This is carried out by analyzing discussants' use of metaphoric expressions. We found that the metaphors given to the use of these substance combinations reflect their pharmacological characteristi

Container metaphor and the cognitive conventionalization of residential naming: a diachronic corpus study of the [X + Li] construction in Chinese.

This study investigates the diachronic metaphorical organization of the Chinese residential naming construction [X + Li] from 1970 to 2019 from a linguistic landscape and cognitive-semantic perspective. Using a corpus of officially registered residential names from Tianjin collected from Anjuke, a major Chinese online real-estate listing platform, the study analyzes 1,672 [X + Li] instances and 228 [X + Yuan] instances. Metaphor types in the modifier X were annotated and inter-annotator reliability was assessed on stratified subsets of both corpora. The annotated data identify eight metaphor t

I'm still me, I'm still a person: war metaphor use and meaning making in women with metastatic breast cancer.

PURPOSE: The war metaphor is one strategy used frequently in breast cancer to inspire individuals in a "fight" against cancer and assist patients in navigating their illness experience. Despite prominent use, the emotional impact of this language has not been examined in the context of meaning making among women with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). METHODS: This study involved a semi-structured interview considering the war metaphor's impact on women's illness experience with MBC. Participants (n = 22) had been diagnosed with MBC for at least 6 months or following 1 disease progression and we
