A study on the correlation of gastrointestinal bleeding and meteorological factors - is there a weather condition for GI bleeding?

AIM: We tried to identify a possible correlation between meteorological factors and the frequency of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). METHODS: We analyzed all endoscopic examinations performed because of suspected GIB from 2013 to 2016 at Jena University Hospital, Germany. Confirmed bleeding events were correlated with local meteorological data and meteorological season using multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Among a total of 35 522 examinations, we identified 5310 endoscopies performed for suspected GIB (61.5 % upper, 38.5 % lower endoscopies). In 35.5 %, GIB could be ascertained, gastroduode

Role of meteorological conditions in reported chickenpox cases in Wuhan and Hong Kong, China.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox is a common contagious disease that remains an important public health issue worldwide. Over 90% of unvaccinated individuals become infected, but infection occurs at different ages in different parts of the world. Many people have been infected by 20 to 30 years of age in China, and adults and pregnant women who become infected often develop severe infection. Furthermore, a mortality rate of 2-3 per 100,000 infected persons has been reported. In this study, we explore the temperature-dependent transition of patterns of reported chickenpox cases in two large subtropical c

Ozone pollution in China: A review of concentrations, meteorological influences, chemical precursors, and effects.

High concentrations of ozone in urban and industrial regions worldwide have long been a major air quality issue. With the rapid increase in fossil fuel consumption in China over the past three decades, the emission of chemical precursors to ozone-nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds-has increased sharply, surpassing that of North America and Europe and raising concerns about worsening ozone pollution in China. Historically, research and control have prioritized acid rain, particulate matter, and more recently fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In contrast, less is known about ozone pol

Meteorological conditions and incidence of Legionnaires' disease in Glasgow, Scotland: application of statistical modelling.

This study investigated the relationships between Legionnaires' disease (LD) incidence and weather in Glasgow, UK, by using advanced statistical methods. Using daily meteorological data and 78 LD cases with known exact date of onset, we fitted a series of Poisson log-linear regression models with explanatory variables for air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and year, and sine-cosine terms for within-year seasonal variation. Our initial model showed an association between LD incidence and 2-day lagged humidity (positive, P = 0·0236) and wind speed (negative, P = 0·033). However, afte

Meteorological influence on the occurrence of gastric dilatation-volvulus in military working dogs in Texas.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening condition in dogs and other species in which the stomach dilates and rotates on itself. The etiology of the disease is multi-factorial, but explicit precipitating causes are unknown. This study sought to determine if there was a significant association between changes in hourly-measured temperature and/or atmospheric pressure and the occurrence of GDV in the population of high-risk working dogs in Texas. The odds of a day being a GDV day, given certain temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions for that day or the day before, was est

Determination and parameterization of some air pollutants as a function of meteorological parameters in Kayseri, Turkey.

In this paper, the statistical relations between meteorological parameters and some pollutant ground level concentrations are presented. The daily average sulfur dioxide and smoke values were measured at five stations in Kayseri over 20 months. The model adopted for analysis differed from the power-law form selected by former investigators. Wind speed, degree-day temperature, the percentage of relative humidity, the previous day's pollution concentrations, and the amount of global solar radiation were the variables of multiple regression equations that were derived to calculate pollutant conce

Incidence of farmer's lung leading to hospitalization and its relation to meteorological observations in Finland.

The standardized annual incidence of farmer's lung (FL) leading to hospitalization during 1980 in Finland was 50 per 100 000 persons employed in farming. Using preset uniform criteria, data were collected from all pulmonary disease units in the country. There were 186 new cases of FL in 1980. The mean age was 46 years, and 64% were women. Using the national population in 1975 as standard, the rates were standardized for age and sex. There were differences both in the incidence and in the sex ratio of FL among the farming population of the six districts of Finland. These differences are closely

Association between meteorological factors and blood pressure variability in northern Guizhou, China.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular mortality worldwide, and its pathogenesis is closely related to environmental exposures. However, most previous studies have focused on the effects of air pollution on resting blood pressure. This study investigated the associations between short-term exposure to meteorological factors and blood pressure variability (BPV). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring data were obtained from 4,355 patients, and indices of systolic and diastolic BPV were calculated. Daily meteorological variables included relative humidity, shortwave radiation, and

Meteorological, behavioural and social determinants in HFMD transmission: a modelling study in Guangzhou, China.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) remains a major public health challenge in China, exhibiting distinct seasonal patterns. This study integrates meteorological, behavioural and social determinants to elucidate the transmission dynamics of HFMD in Guangzhou. Utilizing surveillance data from 2012 to 2022, we employed regression analysis and developed a mechanistic transmission model incorporating absolute humidity (AH), the Baidu search index (BDI) as a proxy for health-seeking behaviour and holiday effects. The model, calibrated via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, explained 91.4% of the cas

Correlation between meteorological factors and vitamin D status under different season.

Pregnant women with low vitamin D levels tend to have poor clinical outcomes. Meteorological factors were associated with vitamin D. Here, we aimed to study the current status of 25-Hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in pregnant women in Kunshan city and investigate the meteorological factors associated with 25(OH)D levels under different seasons. The correlation between meteorological factors and 25(OH)D levels was estimated by cross-correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression. A restrictive cubic spline method was used to estimate the non-linear relationship. From 2015
