Effects of methamphetamine on neural responses to visual stimuli.

RATIONALE: The behavioral and reward-related effects of stimulant drugs have been studied extensively; yet the effect of stimulants on sensory processing is still relatively unknown. Prior brain imaging studies have shown that single doses of stimulant drugs increase neural function during cognitive and attentional processes. However, it is not clear if stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine (MA) affect neural responses to novel sensory stimuli, and whether these effects depend on the visual features of the stimuli. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the effects of a single dose of MA (20

Methamphetamine-Induced Tachydysrhythmia in an Adolescent in Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a common complication affecting patients with type 1 diabetes, and DKA is associated with dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities. Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), although a common tachydysrhythmia in the pediatric population, remains a rare entity in patients presenting with DKA. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of first-time SVT in an adolescent patient with DKA and recent methamphetamine abuse, with both factors likely predisposing him to develop a tachydysrhythmia. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: SVT can be present in a

Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia in patients with methamphetamine use.

BACKGROUND: Data suggest that methamphetamine may increase the risk of nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). We describe patterns of presentation and outcomes of patients with methamphetamine use who present with NOMI to a single institution. METHODS: This is an observational study of patients from January 2015 to September 2017 with methamphetamine use who presented with NOMI at an academic medical center in Northern California. We summarize patient comorbidities, clinical presentation, operative findings, pathologic findings, hospital course, and survival. RESULTS: Ten patients with met

Methamphetamine-induced renal pseudovasculitis: Suspicion is the key.

It is important to recognize drug-induced vasculitis as patients with true vasculitis often require immunosuppressive therapy and delay in treatment can result in significant mortality. Illicit drug use (specifically methamphetamine and cocaine) should be in the differential diagnosis of vasculitis as it typically resolves with cessation of the drug.

First-Rank Symptoms in Methamphetamine Psychosis and Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine psychosis (MAP) symptomatology has been described as indistinguishable from that of schizophrenia (SZ), yet research comparing these two disorders on specific psychotic symptoms such as schneiderian first-rank symptoms (FRS) is lacking. We aimed to determine and compare the occurrence and associations of FRS in patients diagnosed with MAP and with SZ. SAMPLING AND METHOD: Data from SCID-I interviews performed on patients with either a diagnosis of SZ or MAP were compared. We calculated the prevalence of different FRS between MAP and SZ patients and used logistic re

The neurocircuitry involved in oxytocin modulation of methamphetamine addiction.

The role of oxytocin in attenuating the abuse of licit and illicit drugs, including the psychostimulant methamphetamine, has been examined with increased ferocity in recent years. This is largely driven by the potential application of oxytocin as a pharmacotherapy. However, the neural mechanisms by which oxytocin modulates methamphetamine abuse are not well understood. Recent research identified an important role for the accumbens core and subthalamic nucleus in this process, which likely involves an interaction with dopamine, glutamate, GABA, and vasopressin. In addition to providing an overv

Predisposition to and effects of methamphetamine use on the adolescent brain.

Adolescence is a period of heightened vulnerability both to addictive behaviors and drug-induced brain damage. Yet, only limited information exists on the brain mechanisms underlying these adolescent-specific characteristics. Moreover, distinctions in brain correlates between predisposition to drug use and effects of drugs in adolescents are unclear. Using cortical thickness and diffusion tensor image analyses, we found greater and more widespread gray and white matter alterations, particularly affecting the frontostriatal system, in adolescent methamphetamine (MA) users compared with adult us

Epigenetic landscape of amphetamine and methamphetamine addiction in rodents.

Amphetamine and methamphetamine addiction is described by specific behavioral alterations, suggesting long-lasting changes in gene and protein expression within specific brain subregions involved in the reward circuitry. Given the persistence of the addiction phenotype at both behavioral and transcriptional levels, several studies have been conducted to elucidate the epigenetic landscape associated with persistent effects of drug use on the mammalian brain. This review discusses recent advances in our comprehension of epigenetic mechanisms underlying amphetamine- or methamphetamine-induced beh

Duration of detection of methamphetamine in hair after abstinence.

Researchers in the field of hair analysis have known for at least two decades that test results for many chemical compounds remain positive for a considerable period of time after subjects have reported cessation of use. These findings were generally based on small sample populations or individual case studies. Within the last decade, hair analyses of larger populations have investigated the phenomenon of residual positives in abstinent individuals in order to determine the period of time required for various compounds to present negative hair test results at internationally accepted cutoff le

Physical victimization of rural methamphetamine and cocaine users.

Substance use and physical violence often coincide, but little has been published on the correlates associated with receipt of partner versus nonpartner physical violence for rural users of methamphetamine and/or cocaine. In this study, participants' substance use, depression and past-year physical victimization were assessed. In separate logistic regression models, received partner violence in females was associated with age; alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine abuse/dependence; and number of drugs used in the past 6 months. In males, received nonpartner violence was associated with age, co

A COMT gene haplotype associated with methamphetamine abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine (MAMP) use is highly associated with psychiatric disorders with 12-13% of MAMP-dependent patients experiencing psychotic symptoms. Substance abuse and dependence may primarily involve the mesolimbic pathway and dopaminergic brain structures. It follows that dopaminergic genes, particularly COMT (encoding catechol-O-methyltransferase) and its val158met polymorphism (rs4680), are natural candidates for susceptibility loci to addiction. We have previously found an association with rs4680 and MAMP addiction. METHODS: We present additional genotyping of rs165599 in 42

Effect of methamphetamine dependence on heart rate variability.

Methamphetamine (METH) is an increasing popular and highly addictive stimulant associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, cardiovascular pathology and neurotoxicity. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess autonomic function and predict mortality in cardiac disorders and drug intoxication, but has not been characterized in METH use. We recorded HRV in a sample of currently abstinent individuals with a history of METH dependence compared to age- and gender-matched drug-free comparison subjects. HRV was assessed using time domain, frequency domain, and non-linear en

Pharmacological approaches to methamphetamine dependence: a focused review.

Methamphetamine dependence is a serious worldwide public health problem with major medical, psychiatric, socioeconomic and legal consequences. Various neuronal mechanisms implicated in methamphetamine dependence have suggested several pharmacological approaches. A literature search from a range of electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, PsycInfo, the NIDA research monograph index and the reference list of clinicaltrials.gov) was conducted for the period from January 1985 to October 2009. There were no restrictions on the identification or inclusion of studies in terms of publication status, lang

[Establishment and evaluation of animal model with methamphetamine poisoning].

Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) is the most widespread narcotics in the 21st century. The methamphetamine's intoxication mechanism, psychological dependence, drug resistance and therapeutic drug development are the hot spots in current research. Establishment of animal model with methamphetamine poisoning is the basic for the relative studies, the normalization and standardization of the animal model settles the foundation for methamphetamine's further research. This article reviews the animal model of methamphetamine poisoning in China and abroad, the brief history of the acute, subacute an

Prenatal exposure to methamphetamine presenting as neonatal cholestasis.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine has been recognized as a common cause of acute toxic hepatitis in adults with clinical and histologic features indistinguishable from acute viral hepatitis. Clinical presentation of methamphetamine hepatotoxicity ranges from mild acute hepatitis with prompt recovery to fulminant hepatic failure. The pathophysiology of this hepatotoxicity is not well elucidated. Prenatal exposure to methamphetamine has been linked to intrauterine growth retardation and variety of withdrawal symptoms. Neonatal cholestasis is rare but serious problem that indicates hepatobiliary dysf

[Minocycline as a therapeutic drug for methamphetamine use disorders].

Use of methamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an extremely serious and growing problem throughout the world, including Japan. Antipsychotic drugs have been used for psychotic symptoms associated with these abused drugs. However, there are currently no particular pharmacological treatments for the wide range of symptoms associated with these abused drugs. Recently, we reported that the second generation antibiotic drug minocycline can attenuate behavioral abnormalities and neurotoxicity in the brain after administration of methamphetamine or MDMA. In this review, we dis

Gender differences in methamphetamine use and responses: a review.

BACKGROUND: Men and women differ markedly with regard to their use of, and responses to, methamphetamine (MA) and related amphetamines. However, these gender differences oftentimes are given only a cursory consideration in the analyses of these MA effects. OBJECTIVE: In this brief review, we summarize the data on gender differences in various parameters of MA use and responses. Such information on the pattern of male versus female differences in the use and responses to this psychostimulant can aid in tailoring gender-dependent treatment strategies. METHODS: English-language articles were id

Contrasting trajectories of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine use.

Current literature has shown that heroin addiction is characterized by long periods of regular use persisting over the life course, whereas the course of stimulant use is less understood. The current study examined long-term trajectories of drug use for primary heroin, cocaine (crack/powder cocaine), and methamphetamine (meth) users. The analyses used data from five studies that collected longitudinal information using the Natural History Instrument, including 629 primary heroin users, 694 cocaine users, and 474 meth users. Drug use trajectories over the 10 years since initiation demonstrated

The association of methamphetamine use and cardiomyopathy in young patients.

PURPOSE: Methamphetamine is the most widespread illegally used stimulant in the United States. Previously published case reports and series suggest a potential association between methamphetamine exposure and cardiomyopathy. The objective of this study is to demonstrate an association between methamphetamine use and cardiomyopathy. SUBJECT AND METHODS: Case-control study based on chart review of discharges from a tertiary care medical center from January 2001 to June 2004. Patients were < or =45 years old. The emerging epidemic of methamphetamine-induced aortic dissections.

The clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes of six consecutive patients presenting with acute aortic dissection secondary to hypertensive crises from methamphetamine use is described. Data were obtained prospectively from the expanded STS clinical database of the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Washington, but reviewed in a retrospective fashion. These patients represent 5.5% of all patients diagnosed and treated for aortic dissection in the same time period (6/109) and 20% of all patients with aortic dissection under the age of 50 years (6/30). We conclude that
