Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a versatile human pathogen that is associated with diverse types of infections ranging from benign colonization to sepsis. We postulated that MRSA must undergo specific genotypic and phenotypic changes to cause chronic pulmonary disease. We investigated how MRSA adapts to the human airway to establish chronic infection, as occurs during cystic fibrosis (CF). MRSA isolates from patients with CF that were collected over a 4-year period were analyzed by whole-genome sequencing, transcriptional analysis, and metabolic studies. Persistent MRSA i

A 58-year-old man presented with tamponade and underwent an emergency pericardiocentesis. We made the diagnosis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis based on culture results and treated the patient with pericardial drainage and antibiotics as the first-line therapy. After temporary relief, reaccumulation of effusion developed. We successfully created a pericardial window using thoracotomy, and the patient's postoperative course was uneventful. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pericarditis is an extremely rare and life-threatening illness. No consensus exists c

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past two decades, the management of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in chronic rhinosinusitis has posed significant challenges. This document reviews current management techniques and novel treatment modalities for sinonasal MRSA infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Topical antibiotic therapy, that is, drops (ofloxacin) and ointments (mupirocin) as off-label use for the management of MRSA chronic sinusitis, has shown beneficial results. Other more recently trialed nonantibiotic modalities such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and colloidal silver ir

Intravenous drug use (IVDU) can lead to numerous complications from skin abscesses to bacteremia to endocarditis. Here, we present a rare case of acute suppurative thyroiditis as a complication of IVDU, in which a 26-year-old female with a past medical history of IVDU presented to the emergency department for evaluation of a large right sided neck mass. On exam, she had signs of sepsis and thyrotoxicosis. Fine needle aspiration confirmed suppurative thyroiditis. Blood cultures and culture from fine needle aspiration grew Staphylococcus aureus. Patient was treated with 2 weeks of intravenous an

BACKGROUND: It is rare for angioedema to be misidentified by the experienced clinician or for it to mimic another disease process. As an Emergency Physician, it is important to recognize and treat angioedema immediately. Of equal importance is the recognition and initiation of treatment of facial cellulitis. A case report follows that illustrates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) lip infection mimicking angioedema.
CASE REPORT: Here, we describe a case of a 21-year-old man who presented with a swollen lower lip, initially diagnosed as angioedema. Further investigation reveale

Food-borne intoxication, caused by heat-stable enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus, causes over 240,000 cases of food-borne illness in the United States annually. Other staphylococci commonly associated with animals may also produce these enterotoxins. Foods may be contaminated by infected food handlers during slaughter and processing of livestock or by cross-contamination during food preparation. S. aureus also causes a variety of mild to severe skin and soft tissue infections in humans and other animals. Antibiotic resistance is common in staphylococci. Hospital-associated (HA) S.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), one of the most common causes of infections, has been traditionally recognized as a nosocomial pathogen. However, in recent years, its epidemiology has radically changed, being now observed even more frequently in the community, and accounting for > 50% of staphylococcal infections in the US outpatient setting. Community-acquired (CA)-MRSA strains typically cause infections among otherwise healthy individuals, with risk factors differing from those of nosocomial MRSA. The clinical manifestations may range from a furuncle to life-threatening i

A methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus epidermidis strain was isolated from a saddle horse affected by osteolysis. MR coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCNS) were isolated from 11 of 14 (78.8%) horses housed in the same riding club. By typing of the SCCmec region, almost the strains displayed a non typeable (NT) pattern and possessed the ccr type 2. Altogether, the high prevalence of MRCNS and the detection of NT SCCmec types support the hypothesis that horses may represent a reservoir of MRCNS for humans and that equine MRCNS may act as potential source of resistance genes for other sta

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged in the community among patient populations without traditional antibiotic resistance risk factors and is causing a variety of clinical syndromes, in particular skin and soft tissue infections. These infections can range from minor skin involvement that can be treated in an outpatient setting to more serious infections such as necrotizing fasciitis requiring hospitalization. Inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers must be aware of the treatment, prevention, and infection control practices for this emerging pathogen.

PURPOSE: To report a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sclerokeratitis after pterygium excision.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 72-year-old woman who had undergone pterygium excision 6 months ago was referred for severe pain and decreased visual acuity. Although infectious scleritis caused by Pseudomonas was diagnosed clinically, and intravenous amikacin and ceftazidime and topical ciprofloxacin were started, there was no improvement. MRSA was grown in a cultured test, and topical and systemic vancomycin was applied and resolved the corneoscleral inflammation. Scle

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important nosocomial pathogen. It can also cause community-acquired infections. Indian reports about MRSA in community-acquired infections are rare.
AIM: To evaluate the rate of MRSA in community-acquired pyoderma and the nasal colonisation with S. aureus in such patients.
METHODS: Two hundred and fifty patients with community-acquired pyoderma, who attended outreach camps around Mangalore, south India between January 2000 and July 2001, were studied. Swabs collected from the skin lesions and anterior nares were inoculated

The incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in patients admitted to the intensive care unit has dramatically increased in recent years, with an associated increase in morbidity and mortality and the costs of caring for patients with MRSA infections. Although indiscriminate and inappropriate use of antibiotics has contributed to this phenomenon, horizontal transmission of MRSA between patients and health care providers is the principal cause of this observed increase. This article discusses the pathogenesis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of MRSA infe

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is now one of the commonest causes of nosocomial infection worldwide. The mainstay of treatment until now has been the glycopeptides (vancomycin and teicoplanin). They are not without toxicity and need parenteral administration and monitoring of levels. The increasing frequency of MRSA infections, coupled with the emergence of glycopeptide resistance in S. aureus has made the introduction of new drugs active against Gram-positive organisms essential. New agents active against Gram-positive organisms represent either genuinely novel classes of

Optimal treatment of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal periprosthetic infections is predicated on rapid and reliable detection of these organisms. Culture has served as the gold standard for identification of these organisms despite shortcomings with sensitivity and processing time. The objective of the current study was to investigate a polymerase chain reaction assay aimed at rapid genomic detection of methicillin-resistance in staphylococci (mecA gene). The feasibility of the molecular approach first was validated using a septic arthritis model consisting of 73 synovial fluid samples ino

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection was identified in 11 dogs. The infection was associated with surgical treatment especially orthopaedic surgery. Infection after traumatic wounding, and recurrent pyoderma was also seen. Oral antibiotic treatment improved or resolved the infection in nine of the 11 dogs, although the methicillin-resistant isolates were susceptible to relatively few antibiotics.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) recently has been reported as an outpatient pathogen. We assessed this and found our institution's frequency quite low. Only 16 patients (4%) had true community-acquired MRSA bacteremia. Ten had no recorded previous hospitalization; twelve (75%) had significant underlying medical problems. Substance abuse and prior outpatient antibiotic use were not identified as major risks for community-acquired MRSA bacteremia.
