Following isolation of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a patient subjected to amputation below the knee because of a vasculopathy, further investigations were carried out. Nose, throat and wound cultures were taken from staff and patients who had had contact with the index patient. After taking inventory cultures and cleansing of the two wards involved, these wards were quarantined. The bacterial strain was characterized using microbiological standard methods. The MRSA was encountered in a total of nine patients and two nurses. An infection due to this MRSA was found in

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate relatedness among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains isolated in Poland. METHODS: Ninety-three MRSA hospital isolates were collected from different regions in Poland from 1990 to 1992. Strains were analyzed with respect to heterogeneity of methicillin resistance, phage types, resistance patterns, crystal violet staining, chromosomal DNA SmaI restriction patterns by PFGE, ERIC1 and ERIC2 AP-PCR types and DNA repeat polymorphism within the protein A gene. Resistance to methicillin was confirmed by the detection of the mecA gene by PCR. RESULTS: The

We examined the clinical features of 14 men (mean age 72 years) with postoperative enteritis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The patients had all undergone surgery for the treatment of digestive diseases and had received antibiotic prophylaxis consisting of an extended-spectrum cephem. Diarrhea appeared a mean of 3.3 days postoperatively and lasted for 5 days on average. In severe cases organ insufficiency was involved. Coagulate-positive staphylococci were the predominant organisms isolated from watery diarrhea. In 13 of 14 patients, coagulase type II isolates pr

A 55-year-old man was admitted to our department one month after resection of rectal carcinoma, with complaints of fever and general malaise. Shock developed rapidly after admission. The chest X-ray film and computed tomography showed diffuse small nodular shadows and bilateral pleural effusion. Septic lung caused by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) was diagnosed from the results of a bacteriological study. This bacteria is a Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CNS). Chemotherapy with Minocycline and Cefotiam was effective. Characteristic radiologic features of this case

Methods to detect resistance to methicillin in Staphylococcus epidermidis were studied in order to find a rapid screening test suitable for routine use. One hundred and forty-nine clinical isolates, 16 isolates from skin of healthy people and two reference strains were studied. Hypersecretion of beta-lactamase as a cause of methicillin resistance was eliminated in the strains studied. Tube and microtitre breakpoint, agar breakpoint and disc diffusion methods were compared. The breakpoint for methicillin resistance used was 16 mg/L in broth and 10 mg/L in agar. The discs used contained 1 and 5

Staphylococcus epidermidis accounts for nearly one third of all cases of bacterial keratitis in certain geographic areas. Recently, the sensitivity of this organism has changed dramatically so that nearly half of nosocomially acquired systemic S epidermidis infections are resistant to methicillin sodium, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides. Methicillin-resistant and gentamicin sulfate-resistant S epidermidis causing infectious blepharoconjunctivitis and endophthalmitis has previously been reported. Two cases of methicillin- and gentamicin-resistant S epidermidis keratitis occurred that were tr

A survey was undertaken of all isolations of methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at a large Australian teaching hospital over a 12 month period. All methicillin-resistant isolations obtained from the Casualty and Outpatient clinics were from staff members or patients with recent hospital contact. Twenty per cent of all methicillin-resistant isolations from in-patients were from specimens taken within 2 days of the patient's admission. Each of these patients had had hospital contact within the previous 4 months and it is assumed that the majority of them

The cell-wall composition and degree of cross-linking of peptidoglycan in a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (strain MR-1) which is highly resistant to methicillin were similar to those of other strains of S. aureus. When the organism was grown in the presence of very low concentrations of methicillin (equivalent to 3 x 10(-4) x minimum growth-inhibitory concentration [MGIC] there was a large decrease in the degree of cross-linking of the peptidoglycan. Increasing concentrations of methicillin (up to 1.25 x 10(-2) x MGIC) caused a further decrease in cross-linkage but thereafter a minimum value

Asymptomatic carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococci (MRS) may allow for the unseen dissemination of antibiotic-resistant strains through the population. This study investigates the prevalence and epidemiological risk factors that contribute to the spread of MRS in a university setting in Amman, Jordan. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was performed in December 2019. Five hundred and four students enrolled in the study and provided skin and nasal swabs. Swabs were then processed to isolate MRS on Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) + 4 µg/ml oxacillin. Isolates were tested for their an

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a common cause of both community- and hospital-associated infections. The antibiotic resistance and virulence characteristics of MRSA are largely regulated by two-component signal transduction systems (TCS) including the graRS TCS. To make a relatively comprehensive insight into graRS TCS in MRSA, the bioinformatics analysis of dataset GSE26016 (a S. aureus HG001 WT strain vs. the ΔgraRS mutant) from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was performed, and a total of 563 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. GO analysis re

Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile pathogen that is capable of causing infections in both humans and animals. It can cause furuncles, septicaemia, pneumonia and endocarditis. Adaptation of S. aureus to the modern hospital environment has been facilitated, in part, by the horizontal acquisition of drug resistance genes, such as mecA gene that imparts resistance to methicillin. Horizontal acquisitions of islands of genes harbouring virulence and antibiotic resistance genes have made S. aureus resistant to commonly used antibiotics. To decipher genomic islands (GIs) in 22 hospital- and 9 commun

Chlorhexidine has been increasingly utilized in outpatient settings to control methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreaks and as a component of programs for MRSA decolonization and prevention of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of chlorhexidine resistance in clinical and colonizing MRSA isolates obtained in the context of a community-based cluster-randomized controlled trial for SSTI prevention, during which 10,030 soldiers were issued chlorhexidine for body washing. We obtained epidemiological data on study

We describe phenotypic and genotypic analyses carried out on multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from domestic animals. The sequence type ST239 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from dogs were highly resistant to fluoroquinolones, and new combinations of GyrA and GrlA mutations were identified. These findings are consistent with a role for animal carriage in the dissemination of important human pathogens in the community.

Isolation frequency of MRSA in Japan increased up to 60% until 1993. The therapy of infectious diseases usually begins empirically, then doctors would verify or change their regimen according to laboratory data. But the hospital-infected MRSA strains are now highly resistant to beta-lactams, and strains resistant to other antibiotics such as, macrolides, quinolones and minocycline are also increasing. MRSA strains in infected focus are often mixtures of strains expressing different patterns of multiple resistance, and often exist with other pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Relying upo

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) endovascular infections are associated with high mortality. The increasing reports of clinical failure and toxicities associated with first-line vancomycin provide a medical need for alternative therapies. In this narrative review, we analyze studies published from 2017 to 2025 on the efficacy and tolerability of ceftaroline, a β-lactam antibiotic with anti-MRSA activity, for off-label treatment of endovascular infections. Identified publications included 1 randomized controlled trial (RCT), 17 retrospective cohort studies, four case series, a

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in cystic fibrosis (CF) impairs lung function and contributes to the progression of the disease. Optimal eradication regimens for new-onset MRSA infections in people with CF (pwCF) remain undefined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, multicenter study evaluated a standardized, step-up MRSA eradication regimen in pwCF with new-onset MRSA infections between 2020 and 2022.
RESULTS: Ninety-one pwCF (52.7% male, median age: 9 years) were included. Our treatment regimen included oral rifampicin and co-trimoxazole or oral rifamp

Community-acquired pneumonia secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a rare occurrence that is known to occur in young adults with no recent hospitalization. It is known to present with hemoptysis and is usually associated with concomitant influenza infection and is classically diagnosed by sputum culture or broncheoalvolar lavage. Routine treatment of community-acquired pneumonia does not suffice in the event of MRSA growth, and, if left untreated, can develop into serious medical complications of sepsis, multiloculated fluid collections, and multiorgan failure. We report a fatal case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced necrotizing pneumonia that was refractory to adequate vancomycin treatment (trough value, 13.1 µg/ml), drainage of hydropneumothorax, and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Despite appropriate treatment, MRSA infection can cause rapidly progressive disease with a high-case fatality rate.

A critical point in dentistry is the empiric prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics that could increase the levels of antimicrobial resistance. Alveolar osteitis is one of the most common post-op- erative complications in which antibiotic use is controversial. A 35-year-old female, with pain in the right mandibular region and treated with cefixime, was diagnosed with cracked tooth syndrome and pulpitis. The tooth was extracted and a massive purulent bleeding drainage was observed. Irrigation of the socket and a new therapy with azithromycin were done. Bacteriological analysis, a specific m

Staphylococcus genus is a Gram-positive coccus normally associated with skin and mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals. It is part of the commensal human microflora, or found in animals, or contaminating surfaces in the community and hospital settings. Staphylococcus aureus is the most pathogenic species belonging to this genus, as it possesses a collection of virulence factors that are expressed solely to evade the immune system. The increase in the misuse of antimicrobial agents predisposed S. aureus to develop antibiotic resistance, including the resistance to methicillin which led to th
