Dynamic changes in microbial communities during sweet flour sauce fermentation and their correlations with physicochemical properties and volatile compounds.

Sweet flour sauce is a traditional fermented condiment in China, known for its distinct sweet and savory flavor profile. During the fermentation process, the dominant bacterial genera were Ralstonia and Bacillus, and the dominant fungal genera were Aspergillus, Issatchenkia, Clavispora, and Zygosaccharomyces. In addition, total acidity (TA) and amino acid nitrogen (AAN) in different fermentation stages were determined by the acidometer titration method, and reducing sugar (RS) was determined by the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid method. The correlation network revealed TA, RS, and AAN were closely

Changes in the Eye Microbiota Associated with Contact Lens Wearing.

UNLABELLED: Wearing contact lenses has been identified as a risk factor for the development of eye conditions such as giant papillary conjunctivitis and keratitis. We hypothesized that wearing contact lenses is associated with changes in the ocular microbiota. We compared the bacterial communities of the conjunctiva and skin under the eye from 58 subjects and analyzed samples from 20 subjects (9 lens wearers and 11 non-lens wearers) taken at 3 time points using a 16S rRNA gene-based sequencing technique (V4 region; Illumina MiSeq). We found that using anesthetic eye drops before sampling decre

Bacterial recolonization of hospital sink biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Hospital sink drains are known reservoirs for many pathogens that cause healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Drain bacteria can migrate up to the drain cover and then spread to surrounding surfaces and patients through droplet dispersal during sink use. Therefore, cleaning sink surfaces represents a key intervention strategy to limit transmission between drains and patients. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to: (1) characterize microbial community taxonomy and abundance in sink components and (2) evaluate the kinetics and sources of bacterial recolonization onto sink surfaces aft

Assessing the hepatotoxicity of PFOA, PFOS, and 6:2 Cl-PFESA in black-spotted frogs (Rana nigromaculata) and elucidating potential association with gut microbiota.

Pollution caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has become a major global concern. The association between PFAS-induced hepatotoxicity and gut microbiota in amphibians, particularly at environmentally relevant concentrations, remains elusive. Herein we exposed male black-spotted frogs (Rana nigromaculata) to 1 and 10 μg/L waterborne perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (6:2 Cl-PFESA) for 21 days; subsequently, liver histopathological, oxidative stress, molecular docking, gene/protein expression,

Toxicity determination, pollution source delineation, and microbial diversity evaluation of PAHs-contaminated sediments for an urban river.

The Feng-Sang River is a metropolitan river in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. In this study, Feng-Sang River sediments were analyzed to investigate the distributions and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), potentially carcinogenic PAHs (TEQcarc), and toxic equivalence quotient (TEQ) were applied to evaluate influences of PAHs on ecosystems and microbial diversities. Results indicate that PAHs concentrations varied between seasons and locations. The concentrations of ∑16PAHs ranged from 73.6 to 603.8 ng/kg in dry seasons and from 2.3 to 199.3 ng/

Resistome in Lake Bolonha, Brazilian Amazon: Identification of Genes Related to Resistance to Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics.

Resistance to antibiotics is one of the most relevant public health concerns in the world. Aquatic environments play an important role because they are reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotic-resistant strains, contributing to the spread of resistance. The present study investigated the resistome in Lake Bolonha (three sampling sites) in the Amazon region using a metagenomics approach and culture-dependent methods. Whole-metagenome-based results showed that the most abundant phyla were Protobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Cyanobacteria. The composition

Dynamics of Intestinal Mucosa Microbiota in Juvenile Sika Deer During Early Growth.

The establishment of gut microbiota in young ruminants has a profound impact on their productive performance in adulthood. The microbial communities of ruminants differ significantly across the different regions of the digestive tract, as well as between the mucosa and lumen. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of the microbiota of the small intestine (jejunum and ileum) and large intestine (cecum and colon) of sika deer on day 1 (birth), day 42 (transition period) and day 70 (rumination period) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that the microbial diversity of the m

Microbial quality and nutritional aspects of Norwegian brand waters.

The microbiological quality of the five leading brands of Norwegian bottled still waters was investigated. All brands were free for the enteric indicator organisms and named pathogens whose absence is demanded in current quality directives. The relatively nutrient-poor agar R₂A revealed large heterogeneous bacterial populations which grew slowly, or not at all, on clinical media specified for use in substrate-utilization approaches to identification. The main approach used for identification was cultivation of microbes on R₂A, followed by amplification and partial sequencing of 16S rDNA genes.

Boxwood phyllosphere fungal and bacterial communities and their differential responses to film-forming anti-desiccants.

BACKGROUND: Anti-desiccant is a class of agrochemicals widely used to protect plants from water stresses, rapid temperature variations, heat and sunburn, frost and freeze damages, transplant shock, and pathogen and pest attack. Although anti-desiccants are generally considered non-toxic to organisms, it is unclear whether they may impact the phyllosphere microbial communities. In this study, three film-forming anti-desiccant products, TransFilm, Vapor Gard, and Wilt-Pruf were applied to the canopy of two boxwood cultivars 'Vardar Valley' and 'Justin Brouwers' on April 13 and August 26, 2021. Abatement of binary gaseous chlorinated VOC by biotrickling filter: Performance, interactions, and microbial community.

The treatment of waste-gas containing chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) has become a difficult issue in current air pollution control. Biotrickling filters (BTFs) have been recognized to be applicable for the treatment of CVOCs, but research on the biodegradation of binary gaseous CVOCs is rare. Herein, a BTF inoculated with Methylobacterium (M.) rhodesianum H13, Starkeya sp. T-2 and activated sludge was established to investigate the biodegradation of the gaseous dichloromethane (DCM) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) and their interactions implicated. The bioaugmented BTF showed

Changes in seminal plasma microecological dynamics and the mechanistic impact of core metabolite hexadecanamide in asthenozoospermia patients.

Asthenozoospermia (AZS) is a prevalent contributor to male infertility, characterized by a substantial decline in sperm motility. In recent years, large-scale studies have explored the interplay between the male reproductive system's microecology and its implications for reproductive health. Nevertheless, the direct association between seminal microecology and male infertility pathogenesis remains inconclusive. This study used 16S rDNA sequencing and multi-omics analysis to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the seminal microbial community and metabolites in AZS patients. Patients were c

The phyllosphere microbiome shifts toward combating melanose pathogen.

BACKGROUND: Plants can recruit beneficial microbes to enhance their ability to defend against pathogens. However, in contrast to the intensively studied roles of the rhizosphere microbiome in suppressing plant pathogens, the collective community-level change and effect of the phyllosphere microbiome in response to pathogen invasion remains largely elusive. RESULTS: Here, we integrated 16S metabarcoding, shotgun metagenomics and culture-dependent methods to systematically investigate the changes in phyllosphere microbiome between infected and uninfected citrus leaves by Diaporthe citri, a fung
