Novel interactions of a microbial superantigen with TLR2 and TLR4 differentially regulate IL-17 and Th17-associated cytokines.

Mycoplasma arthritidis, an inflammatory murine pathogen, secretes a potent superantigen, Mycoplasma arthritidis mitogen (MAM) that contributes to toxic shock, arthritis and skin necrosis. Previously we showed that MAM induced type 2 T-cell cytokines in mice that express functional TLR2 and TLR4, but type 1 cytokines in mice that lack TLR4 function. We show here that IL-17, pSTAT3 and retinoid-related orphan nuclear receptorγt are rapidly expressed in wild-type C3H/HeSnJ (TLR2+/4+) mice but are significantly delayed in mutant C3H/HeJ (TLR2+/4-) mice. This marked kinetic difference was associate

Individual-network based predictions of microbial interaction signatures for response to biological therapies in IBD patients.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease (CD), is marked by dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. Despite therapeutic interventions with biological agents like Vedolizumab, Ustekinumab, and anti-TNF agents, the variability in clinical, histological, and molecular responses remains significant due to inter-individual and inter-population differences. This study introduces a novel approach using Individual Specific Networks (ISNs) derived from faecal microbial measurements of IBD patients across multiple cohorts. These ISNs, constructed from baselin

Amylase Binding to Oral Streptococci: A Key Interaction for Human Oral Microbial Ecology, Adaptation and Fitness.

The interaction between human salivary alpha-amylase (HSAmy) and amylase-binding oral streptococci (ABS) helps determine the bacteria that colonize the oral cavity by establishing dental biofilms. Streptococci are important pioneer species of the oral cavity and influence oral health as well as common diseases such as dental caries. Various oral streptococcal species express distinct amylase-binding proteins, among which amylase-binding protein A (AbpA), encoded by the abpA gene in Streptococcus gordonii and several other species, which is the most extensively studied. Amylase binding facilita

Changes in microbial composition and interaction patterns of female urogenital tract and rectum in response to HPV infection.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that changes in the microbial community of the female urogenital tract are associated with Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, research on this association was mostly focused on a single site, and there are currently few joint studies on HPV infection and multiple sites in the female urogenital tract. METHODS: We selected 102 healthy women from Yunnan Province as the research object, collected cervical exfoliation fluid, vaginal, urethral, and rectal swabs for microbial community analysis, and measured bacterial load, and related cytokine con

Designing a synthetic microbial community through genome metabolic modeling to enhance plant-microbe interaction.

BACKGROUND: Manipulating the rhizosphere microbial community through beneficial microorganism inoculation has gained interest in improving crop productivity and stress resistance. Synthetic microbial communities, known as SynComs, mimic natural microbial compositions while reducing the number of components. However, achieving this goal requires a comprehensive understanding of natural microbial communities and carefully selecting compatible microorganisms with colonization traits, which still pose challenges. In this study, we employed multi-genome metabolic modeling of 270 previously describe

Humic substances, their microbial interactions and effects on biological transformations of organic pollutants in water and soil: A review.

Depicted as large polymers by the traditional model, humic substances (HS) tend to be considered resistant to biodegradation. However, HS should be regarded as supramolecular associations of rather small molecules. There is evidence that they can be degraded not only by aerobic but also by anaerobic bacteria. HS presence alters biological transformations of organic pollutants in water and soil. HS, including humin, have a great potential for an application in aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment as well as in bioremediation. Black carbon materials, including char (biochar) and activated

Microbial interaction and metabolic profile of low-salinity doubanjiang fermentation with Staphylococcus carnosus and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii.

Staphylococcus carnosus and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii are key microbial drivers in high-salinity doubanjiang fermentation. As sodium salt reduction is demanded recently, understanding the behavior of these core microbes under lower salinity is crucial. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the growth, metabolic characteristics and interaction between Z. rouxii Y-8 and S. carnosus M43 under 9%, 12% and 15% salinities. Through mono- and co-culture experiments, the interaction between Z. rouxii and S. carnosus was strongly influenced by salinity. A positive interaction was observed at 9% and 12

The impact of surface charge on the interaction of cholesterol-free fusogenic liposomes with planktonic microbial cells and biofilms.

This study focused on the development of cholesterol-free fusogenic liposomes with different surface charge with the aim of improving biofilm penetration. In vitro assessments of the liposomes included physical stability, biocompatibility, fusion with microbial cells, and the ability to penetrate established biofilms. Using dynamic light scattering, cholesterol-free, fusogenic liposomes were found to be < 200 nm in size with small size distribution (PDI < 0.1) and physically stable for a year when stored at 4 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed vesicular sizes for selec

Evaluation of CO₂ solubility-trapping and mineral-trapping in microbial-mediated CO₂-brine-sandstone interaction.

Evaluation of CO₂ solubility-trapping and mineral-trapping by microbial-mediated process was investigated by lab experiments in this study. The results verified that microbes could adapt and keep relatively high activity under extreme subsurface environment (pH<5, temperature>50 °C, salinity>1.0 mol/L). When microbes mediated in the CO₂-brine-sandstone interaction, the CO₂ solubility-trapping was enhanced. The more biomass of microbe added, the more amount of CO₂ dissolved and trapped into the water. Consequently, the corrosion of feldspars and clay minerals such as chlorite was improved in re

Interactions between SDBS and Hydrilla verticillata - epiphytic biofilm in wetland receiving STPs effluents: Nutrients removal and epiphytic microbial assembly.

The fate and effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in sewage treatment plants effluents on nutrients and submerged macrophytes are far from clear in wetlands. This study conducted a 24-day experiment to investigate changes in nutrients and epiphytic biofilm of Hydrilla verticillata in wetlands receiving effluents with 0.5, 2 and 5 mg L-1 SDBS. The decrease of SDBS in overlying water followed pseudo-first-order kinetic equation, with over 80 % of SDBS removal achieved. 2 and 5 mg L-1 SDBS decreased nutrient removal efficiency, induced oxidative stress response and damaged cells of

Microbiota-host genetic interactions modulate MASLD risk in PNPLA3I148M carriers via ceramides and are reversible by targeted microbial interventions.

BACKGROUND: The factors that determine when genetic susceptibility to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progresses to clinically significant liver injury remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether disruption of the intestinal host-microbiota interface acts as a contextual modifier that amplifies PNPLA3I148M -associated hepatic injury. DESIGN: We used a dual-hit mouse model combining hepatic Pnpla3I148M -expression with Nlrp6-deficiency, a model of impaired intestinal mucosal homeostasis, under western-diet conditions. Microbial Perspective: Regulatory Mechanisms of Interactions Between Microplastics and Dissolved Organic Matter on Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Aquatic Ecosystems.

Microplastic (MP) pollution may influence aquatic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by altering dissolved organic matter (DOM)-microbe coupling, yet reported effects remain inconsistent across ecosystems and exposure regimes. Here, we synthesized evidence from 16 studies to quantify the net effects of MPs on CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes under ambient DOM conditions. Our meta-analysis indicates that MP exposure significantly increases CO2 emissions and decreases N2O fluxes, whereas CH4 responses show a non-significant positive trend with high variability. Exposure duration and polymer identity emerge

Understanding the kinetics of antibiotic mixture biotransformation and microbial interactions in an anaerobic fixed-bed reactor for wastewater treatment.

The increase of antibiotics in aquatic environments, along with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, highlights the improvement of wastewater treatment technologies. This study investigates a plug-flow structured anaerobic fixed-bed reactor (PF-AnFBR) for removal nine antibiotics representing different classes-an approach rarely explored in anaerobic systems. By integrating spatially resolved sampling along the reactor bed with advanced kinetic modeling, the study provides the first mechanistic evaluation of antibiotic mixture removal in a PF-AnFBR. COD removal remained high (COD >

Integrated gut microbiome and serum lipidomics reveals microbial-lipid interactions for predicting incident metabolic syndrome: a nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disorder characterized by obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Although gut microbiota and lipid metabolism are both known to influence MetS development, their interactions remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory nested case-control study within a prospective health examination cohort. We selected 100 participants (50 incident MetS cases and 50 matched controls) based on age, sex, and baseline MetS components. Gut microbial profiles were characterized by metagenomic sequencing, an

Functional genes with their expression and horizontal gene transfer drive microbial interactions in anammox systems: Critical review and potential applications.

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process, a low-carbon and energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal technology, is crucial for sustainable wastewater treatment and energy self-sufficiency. However, its performance stability is influenced by complex microbial interactions, and the gene-level mechanisms, particularly horizontal gene transfer (HGT), remain underexplored. This review comprehensively examines the interactions between anammox bacteria and their syntrophic partners, focusing on the functional genes involved in substrate degradation, electron transfer, cofactor biosynthe

Performance improvements and increased ruminal microbial interactions in Angus heifers via supplementation with native rumen bacteria during high-grain challenge.

Feedlot cattle may be subjected to digestive disorders, including ruminal acidosis, due to high concentration of grain in their diet. Therefore, novel feeding strategies are required to maximize animal performance and mitigate economic losses in the operation. This study employed a two-period crossover design to assess the effect of direct ruminal administration of native rumen microorganisms (NRM) inoculation on cattle that underwent a high-grain challenge. The NRM inoculation consisted of six microorganisms (1.70 M CFU /day/animal) isolated from the rumen of healthy feedlot cattle: Succinivi

Rice straw returning to the field on soil microbial interactions, soil fertility improvement, and carbon sequestration for CO2 emission reduction.

Rice straw is rich in organic matter and essential nutrients, an important resource for improving soil fertility and enzyme activity. However, its high carbon-nitrogen ratio leads to slow decomposition, affecting nutrient transformation efficiency. The small molecular carbohydrates released during microbial enzymolysis not only serve as an energy source but may also act as signaling molecules, participating in the regulation of soil microbial community structure and plant root development. This review discusses the effects of straw return to the field on soil organic carbon (SOC) stability, mi
