ALGAL BLOOM CAUSES ACUTE TOXICITY AND MORTALITY IN SAMBAR DEER (RUSA UNICOLOR) AT WILDLIFE BREEDING PARK, JALLO-LAHORE, PAKISTAN.

Cyanobacteria toxicosis was diagnosed in an enclosure of sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) in Wildlife Breeding Park, Jallo-Zoo, Lahore, Pakistan. Microscopic examination of pond water and feces from inside of the deer enclosure revealed Microcystis aeruginosa. Clinical findings in seven sambar deer included muscle tremors, dysentery, melena, and enteritis. Necropsy findings revealed froth in trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles (indicative of pulmonary edema) in five of the seven deer. The liver was congested and firm in consistency, and its margins were round. Healed ulcers were found on the tongue a

Characteristics of extracellular organic matters and the formation potential of disinfection by-products during the growth phases of M. aeruginosa and Synedra sp.

Extracellular organic matter (EOM) is an important precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Nowadays, little is known about changes in molecular weight (MW) and hydrophilic (HPI)/hydrophobic (HPO) fractions of EOM during the entire algal growth phase. In this study, a combined approach of fractionation procedure and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis was applied to characterize the EOM during the entire growth phase of two algal species (M. aeruginosa and Synedra sp.), and investigated the relationships between fluorescent component and the DBP formation potential (FP) in MW and HPI/HPO f

[Surgical treatment of patients with micro-cystitis of tuberculous and other etiology].

The urinary bladder was reconstructed by using different segments of the gastrointestinal tract in 45 patients aged 21 to 72 years. The indication for surgery was microcystis of tuberculous and other etiology in 28 (62.2%) and 17 (37.8%) patients, respectively. The overall post-operative mortality was 2.2% (1 patient). Early and late complications were observed in 17.8 and 30.4% patients, respectively. Analysis of the causes of complications has indicated that they are associated with the urine diversion method and with the scope of urinary bladder resection. Seven repeated operations were per

Elucidation of Taste- and Odor-Producing Bacteria and Toxigenic Cyanobacteria in a Midwestern Drinking Water Supply Reservoir by Shotgun Metagenomic Analysis.

UNLABELLED: While commonplace in clinical settings, DNA-based assays for identification or enumeration of drinking water pathogens and other biological contaminants remain widely unadopted by the monitoring community. In this study, shotgun metagenomics was used to identify taste-and-odor producers and toxin-producing cyanobacteria over a 2-year period in a drinking water reservoir. The sequencing data implicated several cyanobacteria, including Anabaena spp., Microcystis spp., and an unresolved member of the order Oscillatoriales as the likely principal producers of geosmin, microcystin, and

Dual effects of cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances on the chemical transformations of silver nanoparticles driven by eco-corona formation.

As a result of their broad commercialization and diverse applications, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are being continuously released into environment. Once entering aquatic systems, AgNPs encounter various biomolecules, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), giving rise to the formation of eco-corona. Proteins are known to interact strongly with nanoparticles, and mediate their environmental behavior, however, the role of polysaccharides, as the dominant component in microalgal EPS, remain largely understood. Herein, cyanobacterial EPS from Microcystis aeruginosa exhibited a concentr

Designing an eco-efficient sonocatalytic process: iron-modified bamboo biochar for cyanobacteria elimination and algal organic matter valorization potential.

Cyanobacterial blooms have emerged as a persistent threat to global aquatic ecosystem stability and drinking water safety. Conventional algae removal technologies (e.g., coagulation, photocatalysis) generally face two long-standing bottlenecks: the trade-off between removal efficiency and secondary pollution from cell lysis-triggered microcystin release, and the lack of valorization pathways for hazardous algal residues. In this study, a low-cost iron/potassium hydroxide co-modified bamboo biochar (BC-900-2, prepared via one-step pyrolysis at 900 °C with a Fe/KOH molar ratio of 2:1) was develo

The coexistence of Bacillus haynesii and Bacillus tequilensis achieves synchronous algicidal activity and denitrification and enhances the MC-LR degradation of phycosphere microbiota.

The key challenge in current biological technologies for the control of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is that algicidal bacteria's lytic mechanisms during bloom treatment results in structural rupture of algal cells. This results in the massive release of intracellularly stored nutrients (such as nitrogen/phosphorus compounds) and secondary metabolites such as microcystins into aquatic environments, causing secondary pollution. This study isolated two Bacillus strains (Bacillus haynesii and Bacillus tequilensis) from phycosphere microbiota, applying them synergistically against Microcystis aerug

Advances in investigating microcystin-induced liver toxicity and underlying mechanisms.

Microcystins (MCs) are a class of biologically active cyclic heptapeptide pollutants produced by the freshwater alga Microcystis aeruginosa. With increased environmental pollution, MCs have become a popular research topic. In recent years, the hepatotoxicity of MCs and associated effects and mechanisms have been studied extensively. Current epidemiological data indicate that long-term human exposure to MCs can lead to severe liver toxicity, acute toxicity, and death. In addition, current toxicological studies on the liver, a vital target organ of MCs, indicate that MC contamination is associat

Selective production of singlet oxygen for harmful cyanobacteria inactivation and cyanotoxins degradation: Efficiency and mechanisms.

Knowledge about the impact of singlet oxygen (1O2) on the characteristics and inactivation of harmful cyanobacterial organic matter is limited. In this study, the feasibility of using an improved single-iron doped graphite-like phase carbon nitride catalyst (FeCN) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic production of 1O2 to inactivate four harmful cyanobacteria was investigated. The inactivation efficiencies at 30 min were 92.77%, 66.84%, 91.06%, and 93.45% for Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa), Nodularia harveyana, Oscillatoria sp., and Nostoc sp., respectively. This was associated

Microcystin toxicosis in cattle due to overgrowth of blue-green algae.

Toxicosis due to microcystin-containing blue-green algae has been sporadically reported in a variety of animal species. Most reports of intoxication involve algal blooms during periods of warm temperatures and abundant sunshine in the spring or early summer. A case of blue-green algae toxicosis with lesions attributable to toxins from Microcystis aeruginosa is described in 4 cattle from southern Georgia during November. The case was unusual in that characteristic hepatic necrosis was accompanied by severe mesenteric edema and peritoneal effusion. In addition, weather conditions and location we

Phytoplankton-specific response to enrichment of phosphorus-rich surface waters with ammonium, nitrate, and urea.

Supply of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) to the biosphere has tripled since 1960; however, little is known of how in situ response to N fertilisation differs among phytoplankton, whether species response varies with the chemical form of N, or how interpretation of N effects is influenced by the method of analysis (microscopy, pigment biomarkers). To address these issues, we conducted two 21-day in situ mesocosm (3140 L) experiments to quantify the species- and genus-specific responses of phytoplankton to fertilisation of P-rich lake waters with ammonium (NH(4)(+)), nitrate (NO(3)(-)), and urea ([N

Phytoplankton and water quality in a Mediterranean drinking-water reservoir (Marathonas Reservoir, Greece).

Phytoplankton and water quality of Marathonas drinking-water Reservoir were examined for the first time. During the study period (July-September 2007), phytoplankton composition was indicative of eutrophic conditions although phytoplankton biovolume was low (max. 2.7 mm³ l⁻¹). Phytoplankton was dominated by cyanobacteria and diatoms, whereas desmids and dinoflagellates contributed with lower biovolume values. Changing flushing rate in the reservoir (up to 0.7% of reservoir's water volume per day) driven by water withdrawal and occurring in pulses for a period of 15-25 days was associated with

Aeruginosin 525 (AER525) from Cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon Sp. (KUCC C2): A New Serine Proteases Inhibitor.

Aeruginosins (AERs) are one of the most common classes of cyanobacterial peptides synthesised through a hybrid non-ribosomal peptide synthase/polyketide synthase pathway. They have been found in Microcystis, Nodularia spumigena, Oscillatoria/Plantothrix, and Nostoc. The presence of AER in Aphanizomenon isolated from the Curonian Lagoon was reported for the first time in our previous work. Here, the structure of aeruginosin 525 (AER525), isolated from Aphanizomenon sp. KUCC C2, was characterised based on high-resolution mass spectrometry. This new AER variant shows potent activity against throm

Hepatic ultrastructural changes induced by the toxin microcystin-LR (MCLR) in mice.

Microcystin-LR (MCLR) is a cyclic heptapeptide produced by the blue-green algae Microcystis aeruginosa. It is highly toxic and causes death in rodents due to hypovolemic shock with associated intrahepatic hemorrhage. The molecular mechanism of toxicity is unknown. In order to provide additional information regarding the toxicity of MCLR, the ultrastructural changes present in livers of mice following the administration of 100 micrograms MCLR/kg intraperitoneally, (i.p.) were examined. Time-dependent changes were observed. Disruption of cell to cell contact occurred with infiltration of erythro

Adaptation strategies of cyanobacteria under trace tetracycline exposure: A comparative study of toxigenic and non-toxigenic strains.

Trace antibiotics exert unclear ecological impacts on cyanobacteria, especially the differential responses between toxigenic and non-toxigenic strains. To address this, we established a paired-strain comparative framework exposing toxigenic Microcystis aeruginosa and non-toxigenic Synechocystis sp. to environmentally relevant tetracycline (0.2, 2, 20 μg/L) for 14 days. Results showed that TC induced hormetic growth in both strains, with final cell density increases of 2.47-9.79% (M. aeruginosa) and 4.98-8.59% (Synechocystis sp.) relative to controls, but exhibited divergent adaptation strategi

Low-level concentrations of aminoglycoside antibiotics induce the aggregation of cyanobacteria.

The interactions between antibiotics and microorganisms have attracted enormous research attentions. In this study, we investigated the effects of two typical aminoglycoside antibiotics on the aggregation of the model cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus, and the dominating strain in algal blooms, Microcystis aeruginosa, via the analysis of zeta potentials, hydrophobicity, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion. The results showed that low-level antibiotics promoted the aggregation of S. elongatus and M. aeruginosa by 40 and 18% under 0.10 and 0.02 μg/mL of kanamycin, respec

Impact of Cyanotoxin Ingestion on Liver Cancer Development Using an At-Risk Two-Staged Model of Mouse Hepatocarcinogenesis.

Exposure to cyanobacterial hepatotoxins has been linked to the promotion and increased incidence of liver cancer in pre-clinical and epidemiologic studies. The family of hepatotoxins, microcystins (MCs), are produced by over 40 cyanobacterial species found in harmful algal blooms (HABs) worldwide, with MC-LR being the most common and potent MC congener. In the current study, we hypothesized that the low-dose chronic ingestion of Microcystis cyanotoxins via drinking water would promote liver carcinogenesis in pre-initiated mice. Four groups of C3H/HeJ mice received one intraperitoneal (i.p.) in
