Extensor-tendon hypoplasia and multiple pterygia: Escobar syndrome in a 7-year-old boy.

Escobar syndrome is a rare condition with autosomal-recessive inheritance, characterised by multiple pterygia, kyphoscoliosis, multiple joint contractures and craniofacial dysmorphisms. A number of other abnormalities are also attributed to the syndrome. Here, we present a case of isolated extrinsic extensor-tendon hypoplasia of the right index finger in a 7-year-old patient with Escobar syndrome. To our knowledge, this has not been previously described in connection with this syndrome.

Michel's anomaly, type I microtia and microdontia.

Michel's anomaly is an extremely rare cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss. We present a 2-1/2 year old white female with this inner ear defect associated with type I microtia and microdontia. Assessment of anatomic structures of the ear is critical in an infant with abnormal auditory brainstem responses to determine whether a structural lesion is present and the most appropriate rehabilitative approach available.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: cases from the coalfields.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis can result in destruction of the temporomandibular joints producing a characteristic facial growth deficiency. Features include loss of vertical ramus height, marked antegonial notching and a Class II malocclusion frequently with an anterior open bite. Two cases are presented, both treated surgically utilizing bilateral autologous costochondral grafts to replace the temporomandibular joints and increase the vertical ramus height. Postoperative orthodontic therapy was employed to close the surgically created posterior open bite in each case. Autologous dermis was u

Familial Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type II: abnormal fibrillogenesis of dermal collagen.

We examined a father and son affected by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type II. Both patients had micrognathia together with ligament and skin hyperlaxity. The son exhibited complete cleft palate. Ultrastructural studies revealed abnormal collagen fibrils in the dermis of both patients. In the child the most striking alterations consisted of lateral fusion of an enormous number of collagen fibrils giving rise to huge polymorphic collagen masses. In the father's dermis the great majority of collagen fibrils appeared normal; however, lateral fusion of fibrils together with local abnormal collagen aggre

Teratogenic effect of trifluoperazine in rats and mice.

Trifluoperazine was administered to pregnant mice and rats by gastric intubation during the period of organogenesis. Dams were treated at doses of 0.5, 5, 50 (mice and rats) and 100 (only rats) mg/kg/day. The drug affected the pregnant weight increment in a dose-related manner in rats but only the 50 mg/kg/day dose level affected the weight gain of mice. The foetal weight was not markedly affected in either species. The drug induced cleft palate and micrognathia in rats but did not produce a teratogenic effect in mice. Trifluoperazine caused abortions in mice and there were significant increas

Ocular manifestations in Kniest syndrome, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, Hallermann-Streiff-François syndrome, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome and median cleft face syndrome.

In the pathology of malformations it is only in very few cases possible to identify a complete syndromal picture; the authors present some multimalformative syndromes, observed in the past few years at the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology of the University of Siena. The ocular findings are reported and discussed in relation with the general features in order to make a correct diagnosis.

[Research advance on the clinical phenotypes and molecular genetic mechanisms of Microcephalic primordial dwarfism].

Primordial dwarfism (PD) refers to a group of monogenic genetic disorders characterized by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and severe, persistent postnatal growth retardation. These diseases have been associated with variants of multiple genes whose products are mainly involved in critical cellular biological processes such as maintenance of genomic stability, DNA damage repair, mRNA splicing regulation, and centrosome function. Variants of such genes can directly impair cell proliferation and developmental potential. With the widespread application of molecular genetic technologies suc

Triad of temporomandibular joint ankylosis, micrognathia, and obstructive sleep apnoea: a systematic review of surgical management.

Complex functional issues arising from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis are associated with abnormal mandibular growth secondary to the condylar-glenoid fossa and its surrounding structures. These include severe limited mouth opening, micrognathia, mandibular asymmetry, and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which necessitate effective treatment to allow optimum functional rehabilitation. This article aims to present a comprehensive systematic review of the surgical strategy for patients who present with a triad of TMJ ankylosis, micrognathia and OSA via a literature search of PubMed, Goog

Children with Rare Nager Syndrome-Literature Review, Clinical and Physiotherapeutic Management.

Nager syndrome is a rare human developmental disorder characterized by craniofacial defects including the downward slanting of the palpebral fissures, cleft palate, limb deformities, mandibular hypoplasia, hypoplasia or absence of thumbs, microretrognathia, and ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint. The prevalence is very rare and the literature describes only about a hundred cases of Nager syndrome. There is evidence of autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritance for Nager syndrome, suggesting genetic heterogeneity. The majority of the described causes of Nager syndrome include

Non-ubiquitous expression of core spliceosomal protein SmB/B' in chick and mouse embryos.

BACKGROUND: Although splicing is an integral part of the expression of many genes in our body, genetic syndromes with spliceosomal defects affect only specific tissues. To help understand the mechanism, we investigated the expression pattern of a core protein of the major spliceosome, SmB/B' (Small Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein Polypeptides B/B'), which is encoded by SNRPB. Loss-of-function mutations of SNRPB in humans cause cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS) characterized by rib gaps, micrognathia, cleft palate, and scoliosis. Our expression analysis focused on the affected structures as we

A second case of contractures, webbed neck, micrognathia, hypoplastic nipples, and distinctive facial features: confirmation of the Dinno syndrome.

We report on a child with micrognathia, a short, webbed neck, joint contractures, hypoplastic nipples, and a number of other anomalies. There are striking similarities to a patient reported by [Dinno and Weisskopf (1976); Synd Ident, 4:10-12], and we postulate that this child represents the second patient with this condition.
