First evidence of microplastics isolated in European citizens' lower airway.

Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in all environmental locations, including the atmosphere. However, few studies have investigated the presence of airborne MPs in the human respiratory system. Our research purpose was to investigate these pollutants in the lower human airways of 44 adult European citizens, using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collection as a minimally invasive method, that enables the detection of these pollutants in living patients. We studied the relationship between the patients' life habits and physiological parameters, based on background information and medical

Automated identification and quantification of invisible microplastics in agricultural soils.

Microplastics in agricultural soils have become the research hotspot in recent years, however, the quantitative methods based on the traditional visual inspection may have a high false detection rate. Here we combined the laser direct infrared (LDIR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) methods to investigate the microplastics in farmland with long-term agricultural activities. The results showed that the total abundance of microplastics reached 1.98 ± 0.41 × 105, 1.57 ± 0.28 × 105, 1.78 ± 0.27 × 105, and 3.20 ± 0.41 × 105 particles/kg soil in cotton fields with film mulching of 5, 10, 20, an

Microplastics as Emerging Food Contaminants: A Challenge for Food Safety.

Microplastics (MPs) have been identified as emerging environmental pollutants classified as primary or secondary based on their source. Composition, shape, size, and colour, among other characteristics, are associated with their capacity to access the food chain and their risks. While the environmental impact of MPs has received much attention, the risks for humans derived from their dietary exposure have not been yet assessed. Several institutions and researchers support that the current knowledge does not supply solid data to complete a solid risk characterization of dietary MPs. The aim of

Raman Microspectroscopy Detection and Characterisation of Microplastics in Human Breastmilk.

The widespread use of plastics determines the inevitable human exposure to its by-products, including microplastics (MPs), which enter the human organism mainly by ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Once internalised, MPs may pass across cell membranes and translocate to different body sites, triggering specific cellular mechanisms. Hence, the potential health impairment caused by the internalisation and accumulation of MPs is of prime concern, as confirmed by numerous studies reporting evident toxic effects in various animal models, marine organisms, and human cell lines. In this pilo

Microplastics in the Food Chain: Food Safety and Environmental Aspects.

Plastic has been an incredibly useful and indispensable material in all aspects of human life. Without it many advances in medicine, technology or industry would not have been possible. However, its easy accessibility and low cost have led to global misuse. Basically, the production of the plastics from different chemical agents is very easy but unfortunately difficult to reuse or recycle, and it is thrown away as litter, incinerated or disposed of in landfill. Plastic once in the environment begins to degrade to very small sizes. Thus, many animals mistake them for food, so plastic enters a m

Characteristics and influencing factors of airborne microplastics in nail salons.

Airborne microplastic particles (MPs) are emerging contaminants. Although some studies have investigated the characteristics of indoor MPs in homes or offices, information regarding MPs in nail salons with potentially higher MP pollution is unavailable. In this study, we collected indoor and outdoor air samples from nail salons to analyze the concentrations, physical characteristics, and polymers of MPs and further assessed the exposure through inhalation and influencing factors. Our data displayed that the average indoor MP concentration was 46 ± 55 MPs/m3. The estimated average annual exposu

Microplastics generated from a biodegradable plastic in freshwater and seawater.

Biodegradable polymers have been regarded as a promising solution to tackle the pollutions caused by the wide use of conventional polymers. However, during the biodegradation process, the material fragmentation leads to microplastics. In this work, the formation of microplastics from biodegradable poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) in different aquatic environments was investigated and compared with the common non-biodegradable low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The results showed that a much larger quantity of plastic fragments/particles were formed in all aquatic environments from

Effect of light irradiation on heavy metal adsorption onto microplastics.

Microplastics are frequently found in many environmental media. Polypropylene (PP) is one of the plastics commonly used, resulting in more and more PP fragments in natural waters. Contaminants, such as lead (Pb), could get adsorbed onto microplastics after the exposure to sunlight, and pose a larger threat to aquatic species. In this study, the oxidative indices of PP pellets after different exposure times to a Xenon lamp were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The results show that the percentage of oxygen content increased from 2.80 to 20

Interactions of microplastics, antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes within WWTPs.

Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in atmosphere, soil, and water and have been characterized as contaminants of emerging concern. When exposed to these environments, MPs interact with the chemical compounds as well as the (micro)organisms inhabiting these ecosystems. This paper overviews the interactions and significant factors influencing the sorption process of antibiotics on MPs since distinct interactions are developed between MPs and antibiotics. The interplay between the MPs and the antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) microbial hosts is presented and the important factors that may sha

Microplastics presence in cultured and wild-caught cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.

Amongst cephalopods microplastics have been reported only in jumbo squid gut. We investigated microplastics in the digestive system of wild cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) as they are predators and prey and compared the stomach, caecum/intestine and digestive gland (DG) of wild and cultured animals, exposed to seawater from a comparable source. Fibers were the most common type (≈90% of total count) but were ≈2× higher in relation to body weight in wild vs. cultured animals. Fibers were transported to the DG where the count was ≈2× higher /g in wild (median 1.85 fibers/g) vs. cultured. In wild-c

Microplastics Exposure Routes and Toxicity Studies to Ecosystems: An Overview.

Microplastics (MPs) are now ubiquitous in global ecosystem, therefore all biota is at risk of exposure and potential toxicity. In this study, we presented an overview of information based on literature concerning exposure to MPs and the toxicity of such exposure. Currently, four major routes of exposure have been identified including entanglement, contact, ingestion and inhalation. Humans maybe the most exposed organism because they are at the peak of the food chain. Toxicology effect to marine and freshwater organisms are classified based on exposure dosage as either high (mortality, decrease

Chemical and physical changes of microplastics during sterilization by chlorination.

Wastewater treatment plants are known to release microplastics that have been detected in aquatic and terrestrial organisms constituting part of the human diet. Chlorination of wastewater-borne microplastics was hypothesized to induce chemical and physical changes detectable by Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In the laboratory, virgin plastics (∼0.05 × 2 × 2 mm) were exposed to differing sterilization conditions representative of dosages used in the disinfection of drinking water, wastewater, and heavily contaminated surfaces. Polypropylene (PP) was most resista

Microplastics as Microbiota Modulators: Rewiring the Gut Metabolism Immune Axis.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants with increasing relevance to human health. Beyond their role as inert particulate pollutants, accumulating evidence suggests that MPs may act as biologically active modulators of the gastrointestinal ecosystem. The gut represents a major interface for MP exposure, where ingested particles interact with intestinal epithelial cells, mucus layers, immune components, and resident microbial communities. This review summarizes current evidence on MPs' capacity to alter gut microbiota composition, impair intestinal barrier integ

Optical sensing of microplastics using advanced nanomaterials: a comprehensive review.

Microplastic pollution has been recognized as a global environmental threat that significantly affects ecosystems, and its contamination may pose a risk to human health. Therefore, it is essential to detect microplastics both quantitatively and qualitatively. However, the accurate detection of microplastics remains challenging. This is due to their broad size distributions, irregular structures and morphologies, and diversity in chemical compositions. Consequently, there is a growing demand for rapid, sensitive, and reproducible analytical platforms capable of detecting microplastics in comple

Microplastics in liquid biofertilizers: An overlooked threat to agricultural soil?

This study investigated the presence of microplastics (MPs, >5 μm to <2 mm) in biofertilizers and estimated their mass input to Swedish agricultural soils. Collective samples from representative biogas facilities were analyzed using optical microscopy and optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy, with selected MPs examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest MPs concentration detected was 888 items g-1. Preliminary observation indicates that MPs abundance was moderately correlated with the proportion of food waste used as biogas feedstock. Mass concentrations reached

Microplastics and co-occurring nitrogen synergistically accelerate blue carbon loss.

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs)-including seagrass meadows, mangroves, and salt marshes-store vast amounts of organic carbon, yet their carbon sink function is increasingly threatened by hazardous microplastics and co-occurring nitrogen pollution. Here, we used a controlled microcosm experiment and multi-omics analysis (16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, and Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) to investigate how two common microplastics-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA)-interact with nitrogen

Microplastics in Female Reproductive and Pregnancy Organs: A Systematic Review.

Background: Microplastics (MPs) have rapidly emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants with growing implications for human health. Evidence now shows that MP exposure may begin during pregnancy and extend into infancy. Foetal exposure to MP raises questions about MP presence within reproductive organs, maternal-foetal MP transfer and the potential impact of MP on women's reproductive health. Objectives: To synthesise current evidence on the presence and distribution of microplastics in the female reproductive system and pregnancy-related organs. Methods: A systematic review of literature

Microplastics as Emerging Neurotoxins: Brain Accumulation, Neuroinflammation, and Neurodegeneration Risk.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as ubiquitous environmental contaminants with profound implications for human neurological health. Recent landmark findings confirm the bioaccumulation of MPs/NPs in human brain tissue-with concentrations reaching 4917 μg/g in 2024 autopsy samples and up to 10-fold higher levels in individuals with dementia-underscoring the urgent need for mechanistic understanding. This review synthesizes current evidence on the routes by which MPs/NPs traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the olfactory pathway, their cellular effects within the cen

Microplastics and nanoplastics: Characterizing potential health perturbations and mechanistic evidence.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs), as emerging environmental pollutants, have become the focus of global attention due to their widespread presence and potential health risks. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, MNPs may trigger multiple cellular and molecular toxic responses, including lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, cell membrane rupture, and mitochondrial dysfunction, disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome, and induce chronic inflammation, increasing the risk of major chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. This paper systematically elaborates o
