INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by fragility of the skin and mucosal membranes. Dystrophic EB (DEB) is caused by mutations in the gene coding for type VII collagen. Among the most frequent oral manifestations in Recessive DEB (RDEB) are oral ulcers and blisters, absence of tongue papillae and palatal rugae, ankyloglossia, oral vestibule obliteration, and microstomia. The following report describes a modified impression technique used in a patient with severe RDEB and severe microstomia to obtain models for orthodontic treatment with aligne

Many clinical studies and literature reviews have suggested that bar and ball attachments in maxillary and mandibular implant-supported overdentures (ISOs) should be indicated only when there is sufficient interocclusal space (IOS; minimum = 30 mm). The aim of this clinical report was to present the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with microstomia due to radiotherapy (IOS = 23 mm). ISOs offer superior retention and greater stability than conventional obturators, so that base extensions were kept to the minimum. Placing the balls parallel to the p

This clinical report describes a digital workflow using extraoral digital photographs and volumetric datasets from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging to create a 3-dimensional (3D), virtual patient with photorealistic appearance. In a patient with microstomia, hinge axis approximation, diagnostic casts simulating postextraction alveolar ridge profile, and facial simulation of prosthetic treatment outcome were completed in a 3D, virtual environment. The approach facilitated the diagnosis, communication, and patient acceptance of the treatment of maxillary and mandibular computer-aided

BACKGROUND: Microstomia is defined as a small mouth size that interferes with daily activities. No protocol has been established for microstomia caused by facial burns. This study aimed to confirm the clinical usefulness of a patient-customized mouthpiece using 3D scanner modeling and printing technology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each participant's mouth was scanned using a 3D scanner and the scanned model was imported into modeling software. After modeling the mouthpiece to fit the maximum horizontal and vertical lengths of the mouth and the thickness of the lips, it was manufactured using a 3

A limited opening of the mouth is defined as microstomia. Microstomia is caused by burns, postoperative head and neck trauma, radiotherapy, or scleroderma. The prosthetic treatment of microstomia presents particular challenges, and patients often complain of an inability to insert or remove the prosthesis. The cause and severity of microstomia can influence the approach to treatment. Different treatment methods have been suggested, including the fabrication of two-piece partial dentures. This clinical report describes the construction of a sectional impression tray and a collapsed partial dent

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of oral lesions in 35 patients diagnosed with generalized recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEBg), with a quantification of their microstomia in comparison with a control group.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The presence of oral mucosal lesions and interincisal maximum oral aperture (MOA) was determined, classifying microstomia according to the method of Naylor, Douglass and Mix (1984).
RESULTS: Blister lesions were identified in 92% of the patients at the time of exploration--the tongue being the most affected location. Microstomia and palatal atrophy w

Microstomia may result from surgical treatment of orofacial neoplasms, cleft lips, maxillofacial trauma, burns, radiotherapy or scleroderma. A maximal oral opening that is smaller than the size of a complete denture can make prosthetic treatment challenging. This clinical report presents the prosthodontic management of a total edentulous patient with microstomia. Sectional mandibular and maxillary trays and foldable mandibular and maxillary denture were fabricated for the total edentulous patient.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumor removal can cause extensive lower lip tissue loss, affecting speech, expression, and swallowing functions.
METHODS: We describe our experience with two cases using a modification of the nasolabial flap technique for total lower lip reconstruction. This approach employs two long strip-shaped flaps rotated to reconstruct the entire lower lip, which helps mitigate functional limitations caused by microstomia.
RESULTS: Two patients underwent successful reconstruction with normal lip function, no microstomia, and restored eating ability. Partial vermillion remained vis

A case of otocephaly with anencephaly and meningomyelocele: Otocephaly is a rare lethal syndrome with microstomia, aglossia, agnathia, and synotia as major clinical features due to arrest in development of the first branchial arch. Some associated anomalies may be present as cyclopia, holoprosencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, situs inversus, and other visceral anomalies. We describe a case of fetus, spontaneously aborted in the 14th week of gestation with otocephaly complex (agnathia, synotia, microstomia) and associated anencephaly and meningomyelocele.

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare hereditary disorder characterised by three basic abnormalities, namely microstomia, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers, and clubfoot. The majority of these patients have microstomia and dental crowding, making oral hygiene difficult and increasing the risk of caries. Treatment of these patients requires a coordinated effort by a team of specialists, including a paediatrician, an anaesthesiologist, a plastic surgeon, a paediatric dentist, and an orthodontist. Herein, we describe dental problems of a child with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome and the tr

Perioral facial burns have a high propensity to formation of microstomia and numerous prosthetic devices have been described that can be used postoperatively to address this problem. We introduce a novel device, the Whiston Buccal Prosthesis, which is used intraoperatively and in the early postoperative period and it acts as a surgical aid to prevent or curtail microstomia, as well as to address other problems associated with facial burns. Our device has an overall 4-fold purpose; 1) it acts as a commissural and circumoral retractor, 2) as a means of counter-pressure during excision of burn es

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare progressive myopathic disorder affecting the face, chest, and limbs. It is characterized by three basic abnormalities: microstomia with pouting lips, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers, and talipes equinovarus. Presence of microstomia is always associated with practical difficulties of oral hygiene maintenance and increased susceptibility to caries. Patient as well as parental counseling is important in these cases. This case report presents a 7-year-old child with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. Emphasis is given for the dental management of such ch

Treatment of patients with microstomia due to scleroderma is complicated. Limited mouth opening and altered finger shape present difficulties at every step of the prosthetic rehabilitation. This article describes the prosthetic management of an edentulous patient with severe microstomia induced by scleroderma. From among the existing treatment options and according to the patient's ability and financial considerations, the authors provided a simple prosthetic design that effectively facilitated the patient's rehabilitation. To plan treatment for a patient with scleroderma, it is important to h

Electrical burns of the mouth are the most common electrical injury in children and can have serious, long-term functional and aesthetic consequences. Presented is a review of the pathogenesis of the associated injury and sequelae, as well as a case report. In the presented case, a multidisciplinary approach was used with input from pediatric dentistry, plastic/burn surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. This collaborative effort and a novel microstomia prevention device produced a superior functional and aesthetic result. Without the aid of a microstomia device, the resultant contractur

An abnormally small oral orifice is defined as microstomia. Microstomia may result from epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which consists of a group of disorders characterized by the presence of mechanical fragility of the skin with recurrent de-velopment of blisters and vesicles, resulting from minor mechanical friction or trauma. Since such patients have a small oral aperture, it may be impossible to take impression and fabricate dentures using conventional methods. In this article, a simple method for taking preliminary impressions from upper and lower edentulous ridges in one patient with limited

The decreased mouth opening (microstomia) represents a frequent finding in patients with systemic scleroderma (SSD), but little information is available about the efficacy of nonsurgical management of this condition. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of a nonsurgical exercise program on the decreased mouth opening in a group of 10 SSD patients with severe microstomia (maximal mouth opening < or =30 mm). The subjects were instructed to perform an exercise program including both mouth-stretching and oral augmentation exercises. The effects of such exercises were assessed after an 18

Microstomia may result from congenital defects, trauma, or surgery. Regardless of the etiology, the scar contracture can result in deformities that produce esthetic and functional disturbances. The literature described the use of static and dynamic commissure retractors. This article describes a technique for constructing commissure retractors from resilient mouth protector material reinforced with stainless steel wire. The tension of the commissure retractors is controlled with elastic bands attached to an orthodontic neck strap. The use of the retractor and the need for careful follow-up are
