BACKGROUND: In Australia, Aboriginal women and babies experience higher maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates than their non-Aboriginal counterparts. Whilst midwifery led continuity of care has been shown to be safe for women and their babies, with benefits including reducing the preterm birth rate, access to this model of care in remote areas remains limited. A Midwifery Group Practice was established in 2009 in a remote city of the Northern Territory, Australia, with the aim of improving outcomes and access to midwifery continuity of care.

BACKGROUND: While various reports have been published concerning ethical dilemmas in nursing and midwifery, and while many nurses and midwives struggle with the conflict between personal feelings raised by abortion and the duties of their position, few studies investigate the extent and conditions of abortion-care education for registered nurses (RNs) and certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) in Japan.
OBJECTIVES: To describe Japanese abortion-care education programs and to investigate program directors' or other relevant persons' perceptions of abortion-care education.
DESIGN: Descriptive study w

We aimed to evaluate the knowledge about chlamydial infection of Greek midwives and midwifery students. An appropriately designed, self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was distributed to 107 midwives and 29 graduating midwifery students. Perceived awareness of chlamydial infection was similar in midwives and students (p=0.083). However, midwives were more aware than students that Chlamydia are acquired through sexual contact (84.1% vs 58.7%; p=0.004) and that chlamydial infection is frequently asymptomatic (72.9% vs 37.9%; p=0.001). Knowledge of the consequences was poor in both groups,

BACKGROUND: In 1996 a new model of maternity care characterized by continuity of midwifery care from early pregnancy through to the postpartum period was implemented for women attending Monash Medical Centre, a tertiary level obstetric service, in Melbourne, Australia. The objective of this study was to compare the new model of care with standard maternity care.
METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 1000 women who booked at the antenatal clinic and met the eligibility criteria were randomly allocated to receive continuity of midwifery care (team care) from a group of seven midwives in co

BACKGROUND: Technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been increasingly incorporated into nursing education to support the development of cognitive, psychomotor, and behavioral competencies. In midwifery, immersive environments offer opportunities to simulate high-risk or low-frequency clinical scenarios, strengthening students' confidence and preparedness for professional practice. However, there is still significant variability in how VR and AR are pedagogically implemented, with limited understanding of their theoretical grounding, instructional design, and e

Background Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue-tie, is diagnosed in neonates when a restrictive lingual frenulum limits tongue mobility and impairs function. This study presents initial data from the newly developed Greek-language questionnaire (Tongue Observation and Mobility Assessment for Oral Restrictions due to Ankyloglossia (TOMARA)), used in conjunction with the Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (ATLFF). The objective was to document clinical examination findings of the infant oral cavity and the breastfeeding challenges experienced by each mother-infant dyad under midwi

BACKGROUND: Health Technology Assessment (HTA) supports evidence-based decision-making, resource allocation, and healthcare quality. Although Indonesia has established national HTA policies, their application in midwifery remains limited. Given ongoing efforts to reduce maternal mortality and advance health transformation, integrating HTA into midwifery is essential for safe, effective, and cost-efficient care.
AIMS: This paper critically examines HTA's potential in Indonesian midwifery, identifying implementation gaps, challenges, and opportunities to improve maternal and child health outcom

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is common, multisystem, life-limiting genetic condition, predominantly in the Caucasian population. There have been recent advances in the management of CF, in particular in the last 5 years following approval of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein modulators by the National Health Service (NHS) for use in people with CF (pwCF).Traditionally, almost 40% of female patients with CF (fwCF) and over 95% of male patients with CF (mwCF) have issues with subfertility or infertility. CFTR modulators have transformed the lives of pwCF who have the spe

Background Continuity of care (COC) in midwifery refers to a model in which a known midwife provides ongoing support to a woman throughout her pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. This approach is believed to enhance the overall quality of care and support positive experiences for both mothers and newborns. However, its implementation varies globally, and it is not widely adopted in some regions, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study explored the feasibility and perception of midwifery-led COC in Abu Dhabi and assessed its potential to reduce hospital readmissions. Methodolo

BACKGROUND: Integral to quality midwifery practice is the education of midwives. Like other countries, Australia faces ongoing challenges in delivering midwifery education programs. Reasons include escalating program costs, challenges in securing meaningful clinical experiences, subsumption of midwifery with nursing, and associated loss of identity in some institutions.
AIM: To critically examine the literature exploring the historical and current drivers, supports and impediments for entry-to-practice midwifery programs to identify strategies to strengthen midwifery education in Australia.

Women with incontinence and/or pelvic organ prolapse presenting to an urogynecology service were offered referral to a dedicated midwifery pessary clinic. Charts of these women were reviewed for demographic information, physical examination, pelvic floor disorders, and details of pessary-fitting sessions. Successful fitting was defined as a comfortable fit and retention of the pessary with valsalva and voiding. Continuation was defined as a successfully fit patient who returned at least once after the initial fitting with the pessary still in use. Spearman's correlations identified variables a

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether postnatal 'hands off' care by midwives on positioning and attachment of the newborn baby improves breast-feeding duration.
DESIGN: Mothers were randomised at the first postnatal feed to receive either care by a midwife trained in the experimental protocol or by a control midwife undertaking routine care.
SETTING: Eight wards in four English Midlands hospitals.
PARTICIPANTS: 370 primiparous mothers with term babies who intended to breast feed, and could sit out of bed to do so.
INTERVENTIONS: Experimental protocol of verbal-only advice on positioning and atta

Midwifery students commonly lack confidence in supporting breastfeeding, which leads to greater reliance on mothers' autonomy. This research explores the acceptability and experiences of using 360-degree Virtual Reality (VR) video to teach midwifery students about breastfeeding support. Semi-structured interviews with 13 students generated three main themes: physical and technical challenges in VR use, shifting perspectives in education, and deep engagement through immersion. Initial findings suggest that immersive VR offers a positive and impactful learning experience.

BACKGROUND: Induction of labor (IOL) has been studied as a strategy to reduce rates of cesarean birth (CB). Midwifery care models are also associated with lower CB rates, even considering that midwives perform fewer IOLs. In this study, we examined childbirth outcomes among individuals undergoing IOL in certified nurse-midwifery (CNM) care as compared to two categories of expectant management (EM).
METHODS: Data were from two CNM practices in the United States (2007-2018). The sample was limited to term nulliparous, nondiabetic, singleton, vertex pregnancies. Individuals having an IOL in each

BACKGROUND: video recording studies have been found to be complex; however very few studies describe the actual introduction and enrolment of the study, the resulting dataset and its interpretation. In this paper we describe the introduction and the use of video recordings of health care provider (HCP)-client interactions in primary care midwifery for research purposes. We also report on the process of data management, data coding and the resulting data set.
METHODS: we describe our experience in undertaking a study using video recording to assess the interaction of the midwife and her client
