Management of sexual problems: the approach of mindfulness.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: During the last 10 years mindfulness has been progressively integrated into protocols for the management of sexual problems. The purpose of this study is to systematize potential benefits of mindfulness in sexual well-being (considering mind, emotion, and body), and to shortly review current applications and effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions to the treatment of sexual problems. RECENT FINDINGS: The majority of evidence available focuses on women's sexual desire and arousal problems, although there are also preliminary findings for the effectiveness of mindful

Mindfulness Meditation for Fibromyalgia: Mechanistic and Clinical Considerations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread pain and a spectrum of psychological comorbidities, rendering treatment difficult and often a financial burden. Fibromyalgia is a complicated chronic pain condition that requires a multimodal therapeutic approach to optimize treatment efficacy. Thus, it has been postulated that mind-body techniques may prove fruitful in treating fibromyalgia. Mindfulness meditation, a behavioral technique premised on non-reactive sensory awareness, attenuates pain and improves mental health outcomes. However, the impact of mindfulness me

Measuring the wandering mind: Polish psychometric adaptation of mind-wandering scales and their links to cognitive control.

This study presents the Polish psychometric adaptation and validation of three widely used scales measuring mind-wandering: the Mind-Wandering Questionnaire, and the Deliberate (MW-D) and Spontaneous (MW-S) Mind-Wandering Scales. Two studies were conducted to confirm the scales' factorial structures, internal consistency, and convergent validity. Study 1 (N = 311) confirmed the two-factor structure of the MW-S and MW-D scales, demonstrating good internal consistency. MW-S but not MW-D correlated with age, showing that younger participants reported more frequent unintentional episodes. Signific

The mind wanders to dark places: Mind-wandering catalyzes rumination in the context of negative affect and impulsivity.

Spontaneous mind-wandering has been theorized to increase susceptibility for rumination, contributing to risk for major depressive disorder (MDD). Clarifying whether-and under what circumstances-mind-wandering leads to rumination could inform the development of targeted interventions to reduce risk for ruminative sequelae. Using intensively sampled data in 44 young adults with remitted MDD and 38 healthy volunteers with 1,558 total observations collected from 2018 to 2022, we conducted multilevel models to investigate temporal relationships between mind-wandering and rumination. Contextual fac

Mutual effects of MinD-membrane interaction: I. Changes in the membrane properties induced by MinD binding.

In Escherichia coli and other bacteria, MinD, along with MinE and MinC, rapidly oscillates from one pole of the cell to the other controlling the correct placement of the division septum. MinD binds to the membrane through its amphipathic C-terminal alpha-helix. This binding, promoted by ATP-induced dimerization, may be further enhanced by a consequent attraction of acidic phospholipids and formation of a stable proteolipid domain. In the context of this hypothesis we studied changes in dynamics of a model membrane caused by MinD binding using membrane-embedded fluorescent probes as reporters.

Monitoring and Acceptance, or Monitoring Only? Effects of a Dismantled Mindfulness Intervention on Mindfulness and Emotional Outcomes: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies based on the Monitoring and Acceptance Theory (MAT) failed to find differential effects of monitoring plus acceptance (MA) and monitoring only (MO) training on negative affect. This study aimed to investigate the differences between MA and MO from the perspective of mindfulness and emotional outcomes. METHODS: A total of 392 participants were randomly assigned to three groups (MA, MO, or Waiting-List [WL]). MA or MO participants received a 14-day online mindfulness training focused on monitoring and acceptance skills, or only monitoring skills, respectively. We

Mindfulness-based stress reduction training supplemented with physiological signals from smartwatch improves mindfulness and reduces stress, but not anxiety and depression.

INTRODUCTION: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) helps counteract the negative consequences of stress. An essential aspect of mind-body therapies is learning to be mindful of emotional reactions and bodily sensations, a process defined as interoceptive awareness. This awareness can also be enhanced by providing physiological feedback from a smartwatch. However, the impact of using smartwatch-generated physiological signals during mindfulness training has not been studied yet. The study aims at verifying, whether physiological signals from a smartwatch would support the MBSR. METHODS: W

Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP): Design for a Pragmatic Clinical Trial of Two Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are evidence-based nonpharmacological treatments for treating chronic pain. However, the predominant MBI, mindfulness-based stress reduction, has features that pose significant implementation barriers. OBJECTIVES: This study will test two approaches to delivering MBIs for improving Veterans' chronic pain and mental health comorbidities. These two approaches address key implementation barriers. METHODS: We will conduct a four-site, three-arm pragmatic randomized controlled trial, Learning to Apply Mindfulness to Pain (LAMP), to test the effec

Teasing apart low mindfulness: differentiating deficits in mindfulness and in psychological flexibility in predicting symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder and depression.

BACKGROUND: This research investigated the differential ability of three components of low mindfulness to uniquely predict symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and depression, while controlling for psychological inflexibility, a construct conceptually related to low mindfulness. Also examined was the meditational role of several mindfulness facets in the relationship between psychological inflexibility and symptoms of each disorder. METHODS: Using a clinical sample (n=153) containing mostly patients with GAD or depression diagnoses, we conducted hierarchical multiple regression anal

Mind at rest, mind at risk: A prospective population-based study of sleep and subsequent mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent among young adults, with evidence suggesting sleep problems as key risk factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between insomnia and sleep characteristics with major depressive episode (MDE) and anxiety disorders, and the association after accounting for baseline mental health symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using data from the Students' Health and Wellbeing Study (SHoT), surveying Norwegian higher education students aged 18 to 35 (N = 53,362). Hostile-Helpless state of mind as further evidence of adult disorganized states of mind in neglecting families.

This study aimed to assess disorganized states of mind in a sample of neglecting and at-risk of neglecting mothers using the recently developed Hostile-Helpless (HH) coding system (Lyons-Ruth et al., 2006) for the Adult Attachment Interview (Main & Goldwyn, 1998). The relation between HH states of mind and mothers' childhood traumas was also examined. Participants were 70 neglecting mothers and at-risk of neglecting mothers. Childhood traumas were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. HH states of mind were coded from Adult Attachment Interview transcripts by two reliable coders.
