Are iron-phosphate minerals a sink for phosphorus in anoxic Black Sea sediments?

Phosphorus (P) is a key nutrient for marine organisms. The only long-term removal pathway for P in the marine realm is burial in sediments. Iron (Fe) bound P accounts for a significant proportion of this burial at the global scale. In sediments underlying anoxic bottom waters, burial of Fe-bound P is generally assumed to be negligible because of reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and release of the associated P. However, recent work suggests that Fe-bound P is an important burial phase in euxinic (i.e. anoxic and sulfidic) basin sediments in the Baltic Sea. In this study, we inve

Inhibition of iron (III) minerals and acidification on the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene.

Reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes is inhibited by acidification and by the presence of Fe (III) as a competitive electron acceptor. Synergism between both factors on dechlorination is predicted as reductive dissolution of Fe (III) minerals is facilitated by acidification. This study was set-up to assess this synergism for two common aquifer Fe (III) minerals, goethite and ferrihydrite. Anaerobic microbial dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) by KB-1 culture and formate as electron donor was investigated in anaerobic batch containers at different solution pH values (6.2-7.2)

Sorption of trichloroethylene in hydrophobic micropores of dealuminated Y zeolites and natural minerals.

Sorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in low organic carbon (<0.1%) geosorbents is difficult to predict because the sorption capacity of the mineral matrix is poorly understood. This research demonstrates hydrophobic micropores can be important sorption sites for VOCs. We studied the sorption of water and TCE on three dealuminated Y zeolites ranging from hydrophilic (CBV-300) to hydrophobic (CBV-720 and CBV-780), with the surface cation density decreasing from 2.07 to 0.42 and 0.16 sites/ nm2, respectively. Water sorption and dehydration data indicate water affinity of the zeolite micr

Effect of bacteria on the inactivation and adsorption on clay minerals of reovirus.

This investigation studied the antiviral activity of, and the utilization of viruses as substrates by, bacteria. Reovirus type 3 and bacterial species representative of those endemic to sewage, aquatic, and terrestrial habitats were used in the model systems. Culture supernatants from Bacillus subtilis maintained for 5 days in a minimal salts medium displayed antiviral activity, but supernatants from Escherichia coli or Serratia marcescens did not. Both live and toluene-killed cells reduced the inactivation of reovirus during 4 days of incubation at 23 +/- 2 degrees C. This protective effect w

[Metabolism of minerals and vitamin D in the pregnant woman and the fetus].

The mineral metabolism in the fetus and pregnant woman is described with reference to data from the medical literature and personal studies. As soon as the twenty-eighth week of gestation, a concentration gradient is established between mother and fetus for calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, with higher levels in the fetus. The vitamin D content of the fetus is dependent on that of the mother; in France, where food is not supplemented, vitamin D deficiency is common in mothers and neonates, especially during the winter and spring and in areas where sunlight is scarce. Vitamin D supplementation

Hierarchically 2D Porous Nanosheets Derived from Clay Minerals for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Capture.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage technologies are key methods for mitigating the greenhouse effect. The development of high-performance adsorbents using abundant natural minerals represents a promising approach to achieving cost-effective CO2 capture. In this work, we report a simple and scalable strategy for preparing two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets from the natural layered clay mineral vermiculite as the raw material, via liquid-phase exfoliation and acid etching. The clay-based 2D porous nanosheets exhibited a high specific surface area, a hierarchical porous structure, and m

Extracellular electron transfer proteins contribute to reduction of ferric minerals by Geobacter biofilms.

To investigate how the thickness and extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities of microbial biofilms influence the reduction of ferric iron [Fe(III)]-containing minerals, we utilized four strains of Geobacter sulfurreducens with varying biofilm thicknesses and EET capabilities. These strains were engineered by modulating intracellular levels of dinucleotide second messengers. We systematically investigated the capacity of biofilms formed by four strains to reduce different Fe(III)-containing minerals including ferrihydrite, goethite, and lepidocrocite. By growing the G. sulfurreducens

Degradation of methylmercury into Hg(0) by the oxidation of iron(II) minerals.

Mercury contamination is a global concern, and the degradation and detoxification of methylmercury have gained significant attention due to its neurotoxicity and biomagnification within the food chain. However, the currently known pathways of abiotic demethylation are limited to light-induced photodegradation process and little is known about light-independent abiotic demethylation of methylmercury. In this study, we reported a novel abiotic pathway for the degradation of methylmercury through the oxidation of both mineral structural iron(II) and surface-adsorbed iron(II) in the absence of lig

Matrix first, minerals later: fine-tuned dietary phosphate increases bone formation in zebrafish.

Bone matrix formation and mineralization are two closely related, yet separated processes. Matrix formation occurs first, mineralization is a second step strictly dependent on the dietary intake of calcium and phosphorus (P). However, mineralization is commonly used as diagnostic parameter for bone-related diseases. In this context, bone loss, often characterized as a condition with reduced bone mineral density, represents a major burden for human health, for which increased dietary mineral intake is generally recommended. Using a counterintuitive approach, we use a low-P diet followed by a su

New insights into persulfate decomposition by soil minerals: radical and non-radical pathways.

Persulfate (PS)-based in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has been widely used for pollutant remediation in soil and groundwater. However, the underlying mechanism of interactions between mineral and PS was not fully explored. In this study, several soil model minerals including goethite, hematite, magnetite, pyrolusite, kaolin, montmorillonite, and nontronite were selected to investigate their potential effects on PS decomposition and free radical evolution. It was found the decomposition efficiency of PS by these minerals varied significantly, and both the radical and non-radical decomposition

Redox Oscillations Activate Thermodynamically Stable Iron Minerals for Enhanced Reactive Oxygen Species Production.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play key roles in driving biogeochemical processes. Recent studies have revealed nonphotochemical electron transfer from redox-active substances (e.g., iron minerals) to oxygen as a new route for ROS production. Yet, naturally occurring iron minerals mainly exist in thermodynamically stable forms, restraining their potential for driving ROS production. Here, we report that tide-induced redox oscillations can activate thermodynamically stable iron minerals for enhanced ROS production. •OH production in intertidal soils (15.8 ± 0.5 μmol/m2) was found to be 5.9-fold

Asbestos and Other Hazardous Fibrous Minerals: Potential Exposure Pathways and Associated Health Risks.

There are six elongate mineral particles (EMPs) corresponding to specific dimensional and morphological criteria, known as asbestos. Responsible for health issues including asbestosis, and malignant mesothelioma, asbestos has been well researched. Despite this, significant exposure continues to occur throughout the world, potentially affecting 125 million people in the workplace and causing thousands of deaths annually from exposure in homes. However, there are other EMPS, such as fibrous/asbestiform erionite, that are classified as carcinogens and have been linked to cancers in areas where it

Deep sea minerals ameliorate diabetic-induced inflammation via inhibition of TNFα signaling pathways.

It has been well-documented that the consumption of deep sea water (DSW) has beneficial effects on myocardial hypertrophy and cardiac apoptosis induced by hypercholesterolemia. However, the molecular mechanisms for the anti-inflammatory effects of DSW on diabetic cardiomyopathy are still largely unclear. The main purpose of this present study was to test the hypothesis that DSW exerts anti-inflammatory effects through the suppression of the TNF-α-mediated signaling pathways. IP injection of streptozotocin (STZ) at the dose of 65 mg/kg was used to establish a diabetes rat model. DSW mineral ext

Micromotors for Active Delivery of Minerals toward the Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia.

As the most common nutritional disorder, iron deficiency represents a major public health problem with broad impacts on physical and mental development. However, treatment is often compromised by low iron bioavailability and undesired side effects. Here, we report on the development of active mineral delivery vehicles using Mg-based micromotors, which can autonomously propel in gastrointestinal fluids, aiding in the dynamic delivery of minerals. Iron and selenium are combined as a model mineral payload in the micromotor platform. We demonstrate the ability of our mineral-loaded micromotors to

Single layer porous media with entrapped minerals for microscale studies of multiphase flow.

The behaviour of minerals (i.e. salts) such as sodium chloride and calcite in porous media is very important in various applications such as weathering of artworks, oil recovery and CO2 sequestration. We report a novel method for manufacturing single layer porous media in which minerals can be entrapped in a controlled way in order to study their dissolution and recrystallization. In addition, our manufacturing method is a versatile tool for creating monomodal, bimodal or multimodal pore size microporous media with controlled porosity ranging from 25% to 50%. These micromodels allow multiphase

Effects of red earthworms (Eisenia fetida) on leachability of lead minerals in soil.

Contamination of soils by metals and metalloids is an important environmental problem in many residential and industrial sites around the world. Lead is a common contaminant, which enters the soil through mining, industrial activities and waste disposal. A range of technologies can be used to remediate soil lead, however most remediation technologies adversely affect the environment and particularly soil biota. We have assessed the efficacy of vermiremediation (the use of earthworms for remediation) to reduce water extractable lead concentrations in soil. Earthworms were introduced to a sandy

Dietary Intake of Minerals, Vitamins, and Trace Elements Among Geriatric Population in India.

The geriatric population is at a high risk of developing deficiencies of essential micronutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and trace elements and their related deficiency signs and symptoms. Scarce data is available on the dietary intake of essential micronutrients among geriatric subjects in India. Hence, to fill the gap in the existing knowledge, a community-based cross-sectional study was conducted during 2015-2016 in District Nainital, Uttarakhand State, India. A total of 255 geriatric subjects were enrolled from 30 clusters (villages) identified by using population proportionate to siz
