Blood flow restricted resistance training in older adults at risk of mobility limitations.

UNLABELLED: High-load resistance training (HL) may be contraindicated in older adults due to pre-existing health conditions (e.g. osteoarthritis). Low-load blood flow restricted (BFR) resistance training offers an alternative to HL with potentially similar strength improvement. PURPOSE: To compare muscle strength, cross-sectional area (CSA), physical function, and quality of life (QOL) following 12-weeks of HL or BFR training in older adults at risk of mobility limitations. METHODS: Thirty-six males and females (mean: 75.6years 95% confidence interval: [73.4-78.5], 1.67m [1.64-1.70], 74.3kg

Mobility limitations and fear of falling in non-English speaking older Mexican-Americans.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether older Mexican-Americans who cannot speak and/or understand spoken English have higher rates of mobility limitations or fear of falling than their English-speaking counterparts. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1169 community-dwelling Mexican-Americans aged 72-96 years from the 2000-2001 wave of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly. Mobility limitations were defined as having a Short Physical Performance Battery score ≤9, and fear of falling by participant report of being somewhat, fairly, or very afr

Incident Diabetes and Mobility Limitations: Reducing Bias Through Risk-set Matching.

BACKGROUND: Increased prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. population could contribute substantially to increases in disability at older ages. Previous studies have examined the association between prevalent diabetes and various impairments and disabilities. Methods considering incident, rather than prevalent, diabetes as the exposure of interest can reduce bias in estimates of these associations. METHODS: Risk-set matching, a type of propensity score matching meant to handle time-varying exposures, was used to estimate the relationship between incident diabetes and mobility limitations among a

A regions-of-interest volumetric analysis of mobility limitations in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: In community-dwelling older adults, greater mobility impairment is associated with greater burden of diffuse brain structural abnormalities, such as higher white matter hyperintensities. This study examined the association between gray matter volumes of regions related to motor control, gait, and balance and whether this association is independent of burden of white matter hyperintensities. METHODS: A random sample of 327 participants of the Cardiovascular Health Study (78.3 +/- 4.1 years old, 57% women) contributed brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and mobility data. A brain

Limited joint mobility in Sri Lankan patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

Two hundred and sixteen patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) and 216 age- and gender-matched controls were studied to assess the prevalence of limited joint mobility (LJM). Joint mobility was measured by goniometry at metacarpophalangeal and subtalar joints, and those in whom a prayer sign was elicited were said to have cheiroarthropathy. Forty diabetic patients and 10 controls had cheirorathropathy. The mean range of motion was reduced at metacarpophalangeal joints in diabetic patients with cheiroarthropathy (36.8 +/- 9.2) and without cheiroarthropathy (45.7 +/- 8.1) when comp

Corticosteroid responsive tenosynovitis is a common pathway for limited joint mobility in the diabetic hand.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that diabetic tenosynovitis participates in the contractures of the syndrome of limited joint mobility (SLJM). METHODS: Adults with diabetes mellitus were referred for the evaluation of diabetic hand conditions. Patients with SLJM or diabetic trigger finger were studied after Dupuytren's contracture, hand neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and arthritis were excluded. A time series design was employed in which patients were observed for 3 mo to obtain a baseline, then the planar flexor tendon sheaths were injected with 10 mg of methylprednisolone acetate or

Limited joint mobility and lipodystrophy in children and adolescents with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

One hundred forty-eight children, aged 11.9 +/- 3.7 years, who had insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) for 4.5 +/- 3.7 years and glycosylated Hb values (HbA1) of 10.5% +/- 4.5%, were examined for limited joint mobility (LJM) and lipodystrophy. In all diabetics, human biosynthetic insulin was used. Six hundred forty-eight pupils, aged 11.8 +/- 2.5 years, served as controls. LJM was found in 28.4% of the diabetics and in 7.5% of the controls (p < 0.001). The presence and severity of LJM was positively correlated with the duration of diabetes and negatively with height. There was no correl

Characterizing virtual community exercise programs for people with mobility limitations: a scoping review.

Virtual delivery of exercise programs can overcome barriers associated with accessing in-person programs for people with mobility limitations. Despite the growing number of virtual programs, several gaps remain, including how these programs are delivered and the specific strategies used to engage participants safely. We aimed to describe the intervention and methodological characteristics of virtual community exercise programs for adults with mobility limitations. We conducted a scoping review of virtual community exercise programs for adults with health conditions associated with mobility lim

Indoor mobility challenges among older adults: A systematic review of barriers and limitations.

INTRODUCTION: The global population is projected to double by 2050 with most older adults expressing preference to age in place. Despite this demographic shift, indoor mobility challenges which directly impact independence, safety and quality of life remains poorly understudied, creating a critical knowledge gap for effective intervention development. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on four databases from inception to September 2024. Inclusion criteria included: (1) participants aged 60 years and above; (2) were primary data on self-reported indoor mobility challenges; a

Limited Joint Mobility in Type 1 Diabetes: Diabetic Cheiroarthropathy, a Neglected Entity.

Musculoskeletal disorders are common in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Among them, diabetic cheiroarthropathy (DCA), more commonly seen in type 1 diabetes, is a late complication that often causes physical and emotional disturbance. DCA, characterized by movement restrictions in the small joints of hands, is usually a clinical diagnosis and bears significance owing to the functional hand disabilities that it causes and its association with various microvascular complications, most importantly retinopathy. A 24-year-old male patient, with type 1 diabetes of 20 years duration, presented to
