Cardiac vagal control and theoretical models of co-occurring depression and anxiety: a cross-sectional psychophysiological study of community elderly.

BACKGROUND: In order to elucidate the complex relationship between co-occurring depression and anxiety with cardiac autonomic function in the elderly, this study examined the correlation between cardiac vagal control (CVC) and pre-defined, theoretical factors from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). METHODS: Three hundred fifty-four randomly selected Chinese male subjects aged ≥ 65 years and living in the community were enrolled. CVC was measured using a frequency-domain index of heart rate variability. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the flat tripartite model

Some theoretical models and constructs generic to substance abuse prevention programs for adolescents: possible relevance and limitations for problem gambling.

For the past several years the author and his colleagues have explored the area of how social psychological constructs and theoretical models can be applied to the prevention of health threatening behaviors in adolescents. In examining the need for the development of gambling prevention programs for adolescents, it might be of value to consider the application of such constructs and theoretical models as a foundation to the development of prevention programs in this emerging problem behavior among adolescents. In order to provide perspective to the reader, the present paper reviews the history

Current models of insomnia disorder: a theoretical review on the potential role of the orexinergic pathway with implications for insomnia treatment.

Insomnia disorder is considered as a stress-related disorder associated with hyperarousal, stress and emotion dysregulation and the instability of the 'flip-flop' switch system. The orexinergic system is well known for its key role in sleep and arousal processes but also in the allostatic system regulating stress and emotions and may thus be of major interest for insomnia and its treatment. Accordingly, we discuss the potential role of orexins on sleep processes, brain systems modulating stress and emotions with potential implications for insomnia pathophysiology. We reviewed available data on

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Reaction of C2H with Formaldehyde (CH2O) at Very Low Temperatures and Application to Astrochemical Models.

Rate coefficients for the reaction of C2H with CH2O were measured for the first time over the temperature range of 37-603 K, with the C2H radicals produced by pulsed laser photolysis and detected by CH radical chemiluminescence following their reaction with O2. The low temperature measurements (≤93 K) relevant to the interstellar medium were made within a Laval nozzle gas expansion, while higher temperature measurements (≥308 K) were made within a temperature controlled reaction cell. The rate coefficients display a negative temperature dependence below 300 K, reaching (1.3 ± 0.2) × 10-10 cm3

AI-driven electrocatalysis: reinforcement learning-based control and theoretical modeling of the glycerol oxidation reaction.

In this work, we present the full development process of a reinforcement-learning-based controller deployed in a closed-loop experimental setup to optimize the glycerol electrooxidation reaction. The conversion of glycerol to valuable products on platinum has attracted attention as a substitute for the oxygen evolution reaction in hydrogen-producing electrolyzers, motivated by the availability of glycerol as an inexpensive byproduct of biodiesel production. However, the glycerol oxidation reaction is known to poison platinum, requiring an intelligent operation procedure to sustain high convers

Holistic Nursing Care for People Experiencing Diabetes Burnout: A Theoretical Reflection Using the Tidal Model.

Diabetes burnout is an emerging psychosocial phenomenon characterized by emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion associated with the continuous demands of diabetes management, adversely affecting self-care and wellbeing. This study aimed to develop a theoretical reflection on how the principles of the Tidal Model, interpreted through the lens of holistic nursing, may inform nursing care for individuals experiencing diabetes burnout. This theoretical reflection was based on an analytical and interpretive approach using The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals, integrated with

Network proximity analysis as a theoretical model for identifying potential novel therapies in primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive cholestatic liver disease with no licensed therapies. Previous Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have identified genes that correlate significantly with PSC, and these were identified by systematic review. Here we use novel Network Proximity Analysis (NPA) methods to identify already licensed candidate drugs that may have an effect on the genetically coded aspects of PSC pathophysiology.Over 2000 agents were identified as significantly linked to genes implicated in PSC by this method. The most significant results include previously res

A bidirectional model of sleep and technology use: A theoretical review of How much, for whom, and which mechanisms.

The link between technology and sleep is more complex than originally thought. In this updated theoretical review, we propose a new model informed by the growing body of evidence in the area over the past 10 years. The main theoretical change is the addition of bi-directional links between the use of technology and sleep problems. We begin by reviewing the evidence to date for the originally proposed mechanisms of bright light, arousal, nighttime sleep disruptions, and sleep displacement. Then, in support of the new direction of effect (sleep problems preceding technology use), we propose two

Effects of bentonite on p-methoxybenzyl acetate: a theoretical model for oligomerization via an electrophilic-substitution mechanism.

Tonsil Actisil FF, a commercial bentonitic clay, promotes the formation of a series of electrophilic-aromatic-substitution products from para-methoxybenzyl acetate in carbon disulfide. The molecules obtained correspond to linear isomeric dimers, trimers, tetramers and a pentamer, according to their spectroscopic data. A clear indication of the title mechanistic pathway for the oligomerization growth was obtained from the analysis of a set of computational-chemistry calculations using the density-functional-theory level B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p). The corresponding conclusions were based on the comput

Cooperation versus competition in a mass emergency evacuation: a new laboratory simulation and a new theoretical model.

Virtual reality technology is argued to be suitable to the simulation study of mass evacuation behavior, because of the practical and ethical constraints in researching this field. This article describes three studies in which a new virtual reality paradigm was used, in which participants had to escape from a burning underground rail station. Study 1 was carried out in an immersion laboratory and demonstrated that collective identification in the crowd was enhanced by the (shared) threat embodied in emergency itself. In Study 2, high-identification participants were more helpful and pushed les

A three-dimensional theoretical model of the relationship between cavernosal expandability and percent cavernosal smooth muscle.

INTRODUCTION: Percent corporal smooth muscle content, a traditional predictor of corporal veno-occlusive function, is invasive and clinically assessed by histomorphometric analyses of erectile tissue biopsies. Cavernosal "expandability" which may be a more physiologically relevant parameter is a measure of work performed to achieve penile erection, and as a consequence, an indicator of the ability to approach maximum penile volume at low intracavernosal pressure. AIM: To demonstrate that cavernosal "expandability" determined by noninvasive methodology can replace the determination of percent

A theoretical model of slow wave regulation using voltage-dependent synthesis of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate.

A qualitative mathematical model is presented that examines membrane potential feedback on synthesis of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP(3)), and its role in generation and modulation of slow waves. Previous experimental studies indicate that slow waves show voltage dependence, and this is likely to result through membrane potential modulation of IP(3). It is proposed that the observed response of the tissue to current pulse, pulse train, and maintained current injection can be explained by changes in IP(3), modulated through a voltage-IP(3) feedback loop. Differences underlying the tissue res

Control of industrial exposure to tetrachloroethylene by measuring alveolar concentrations: theoretical approach using a mathematical model.

Guberan, E. and Fernandez, J. (1974).British Journal of Industrial Medicine,31, 159-167. Control of industrial exposure to tetrachloroethylene by measuring alveolar concentrations: theoretical approach using a mathematical model. The uptake, distribution, and elimination of tetrachloroethylene were studied using a mathematical model, and predicted alveolar concentrations were compared with experimental data. Because of its high fat solubility the solvent accumulated in adipose tissue with a predicted biological half-life of 71·5 hours. The relation between the alveolar concentrations and the l

Computational modeling of paresthesia generated by SCS using a percutaneous lead: a proof-of-concept theoretical model based on an arbitrary somatotopic distribution.

Objectives.Chronic pain affects over two billion people worldwide, significantly reducing quality of life and placing a substantial burden on healthcare systems and society. Neuropathic painoriginates from lesions of the central or peripheral nervous system. Despite pharmacological, surgical and paramedical management, many patients continue experiencing persistent pain. Epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) has become an effective alternative treatment for neuropathic pain. That said, SCS efficacy is dependent on many parameters, including optimized spatial targeting based on paresthesia gen

Theoretical interpretation of ecological observations of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: application of the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model.

PURPOSE: Ecological observations in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) show that populations of large mammals, such as wolves, boars, and elks, have recovered and remain stable despite chronic exposure to radiation. This study applies the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model-a dynamic, dose-rate-dependent mathematical model-to the CEZ environment to explain the observed ecological stability under persistent low-dose-rate exposure that conventional Linear Non-Threshold (LNT) models fail to predict. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The WAM model explicitly incorporates removal processes of radiation-induced mutated

Toward a Better Understanding of Fear of Cancer Recurrence in Adolescents and Young Adults: Validation of a Theoretical Model.

PURPOSE: Theoretical models on fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) have been developed and validated for adult cancer survivors, despite high levels of FCR being found in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). This study intended to empirically validate a model of FCR for AYAs based on the theoretical models of Lee-Jones and Lebel. METHODS: One hundred AYAs diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15 and 25 were included (59% female). Data were collected online and in-person from four hospitals and one association for young cancer patients in Portugal using the Quality of Life (QoL) Questionnaire

Cellulose Ionogels: Unraveling Structure-Property Relationships Through Multiscale In-Situ Characterization and Theoretical Modeling.

Cellulose ionogels have emerged as promising functional soft materials for flexible electronics, energy storage, and biosensing owing to their inherent biocompatibility and unique ionic conductivity. However, establishing precise structure-property relationships remains a fundamental challenge due to the complex, non-equilibrium dynamic processes-such as transient solvation, competing hydrogen-bonding networks, and mesoscopic phase separation-that occur during dissolution and gelation. Traditional static and post-mortem characterizations fail to capture these spatiotemporally dynamic behaviors

A Theoretical Model for the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia Using the STEAP3 Protein, and the Genetic Challenges of Treating AGA.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent condition. The treatment methods currently available for this condition have limited potential (minoxidil) and side effects with long-term therapy that affect the physiology of the male population (5α-reductase inhibitors). In recent years, there has been a considerable expansion in knowledge about the etiology of AGA, while current treatment methods appear to be outdated in light of new findings. METHODS: A review of the latest publications on androgenetic alopecia concerning its etiology and genetics was conducted, with the aim
