Occurrence of helminths in shrews and small rodents on territories transformed by reclamation.

Shrews and small rodents inhabit the drainage channel banks in reclai med areas and have their own helminth complex. The aim of the study is to conduct the 3rd research period during 2015-2019 the helminth fauna of these animals living on the drainage channel banks of model reclamation systems in Brest Polesie (south-western part of Belarus), to establish the species composition of helminths and the animal infection by these, and to compare the data obtained with previous research periods. 4,000 trap-days were worked out. 151 specimens of shrews of 4 species and 510 small rodents of 8 species

Endoparasites of Small Mammals in Edo State, Nigeria: Public Health Implications.

Some small mammals occur as household pests and harbour a number of parasites that could be of public health importance. This study profiled the helminth and protozoan parasites in trapped small mammals within and around human dwelling places (houses) located across 4 major towns (Auchi, Benin, Ekpoma, and Uromi) and environs in Edo state, Nigeria. Six genera (Apodemus sp., Crocidura sp., Mastomys natalensis, Mus musculus, Rattus sp., and Sorex sp.) were identified from 502 trapped small mammals. Overall, M. musculus (71.9%) and Rattus rattus (20.1%) were the most frequently trapped. In total,

Rat bite fever in a pet lover.

Rat-bite fever is an uncommon bacterial illness resulting from infection with Streptobacillus moniliformis that is often transmitted by the bite of a rat. The cutaneous findings in rat-bite fever are nonspecific but have been described as maculopapular or petechial. We describe a 9-year-old girl with acrally distributed hemorrhagic pustules, fever, and arthralgias. Diagnosis was delayed because of difficulty in identifying the pathologic organism. She was successfully treated with 10 days of ceftriaxone.

Rat bite fever: report of a fatal case.

Two days following a rat bite, a 3-month-old boy presented to the ED with a temperature of 40 C and several puncture wounds on his right hand. He died after a fulminating illness. Postmortem examination revealed endocarditis, interstitial pneumonia, hepatic and splenic congestion, and arthritis. Blood cultures revealed the presence of Streptobacillus moniliformis. Rat bite fever is rare in the United States, occurring most commonly in children and laboratory personnel.

Multifocal pyogenic arthritis and osteomyelitis with bacteremia caused by Streptobacillus notomytis: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

Streptobacillus notomytis, recently recognized as a distinct species from Streptobacillus moniliformis-the primary causative agent of rat-bite fever-has been implicated in rare human infections. To date, there are no documented cases of femoral and tibial osteomyelitis attributable to this pathogen. Herein, we report a case of multifocal pyogenic arthritis and osteomyelitis involving the femur and tibia with bacteremia caused by S. notomytis, alongside a review of human infections associated with this organism. A 73-year-old woman initially presented with left knee pain at another hospital, wh

[Acute fever due to rats].

The bite of a rat can transmit diverse micro-organisms; however, the development of health measures and the improved conditions of habitability of homes have meant that the infectious diseases transmitted by the aggressions of these animals are infrequent in industrialised countries. In occasional circumstances this type of aggression can still take place, especially in depressed areas on the periphery of big cities and in uninhabited premises, this being a possibility that it is advisable to bear in mind. The case is presented of fever due to a rat bite in a patient who was attacked while cle

Rat bite fever due to Streptobacillus notomytis complicated by meningitis and spondylodiscitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Only three other cases of rat bite fever caused by Streptobacillus notomytis in humans have been reported since this species was identified in 2015. Data specific to the differences in clinical features and geographic distribution between S. notomytis infection and S. moniliformis infection are scarce. All previous cases of human S. notomytis infection were reported from Japan. This is the first case of S. notomytis infection reported from outside of Japan. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Thai woman was admitted to Siriraj Hospital (Bangkok, Thailand)-Thailand's largest universit

The rise of the rats: A growing paediatric issue.

Rat bite fever (RBF), a systemic infection of Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus characterized by fever, arthralgias and petechial-purpuric rash on the extremities, carries a mortality rate of 7% to 10% if untreated. In Canada, one adult and two paediatric cases of RBF have been reported since 2000. In recent years, pet rats have become quite popular among children, placing them at an increased risk for RBF. Thus, paediatricians need to be more wary of the potential for RBF in their patients. In the present report, a culture-confirmed case of RBF and two additional cases of suspec

Rat bite fever without fever.

Rat bite fever is a rarely reported acute febrile bacterial illness caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus following a rat bite. It is classically characterised by abrupt onset of fever with rigors, myalgias, headache, and the appearance of a generalised maculopapular petechial skin rash. Polyarthritis complicates the course of the disease in up to 50% of infected patients, and numerous hurdles can make the diagnosis particularly difficult in the absence of fever or rash, as in the present case. A high degree of awareness is necessary to make the correct diagnosis in such ca

Rat bite fever with osteomyelitis and discitis: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare systemic febrile illness transmitted by rats. Streptobacillus moniliformis is a pleomorphic Gram-negative bacillus which is the usual etiologic organism for rat bite fever in the United States. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of rat bite fever complicated by vertebral osteomyelitis and discitis. The patient revealed an exposure history of being bitten by pet rats. The patient's symptoms dramatically improved with a six-week course of cephalexin therapy. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to obtain a thorough zoonotic exposure history and maintai

Rat-bite fever in children: case report and review.

We report 2 cases of rat-bite fever (RBF), a multisystem zoonosis, in children and review the literature. RBF is caused by I of 2 Gram-negative organisms: Streptobacillus moniliformis or, less commonly, Spirillum minus. Both of our cases developed in school-aged girls with a history of rat exposure who presented with a multisystem illness consisting of fever, petechial and purpuric rash, arthralgia and polyarthritis. Both responded promptly to antibiotic treatment. An additional 10 cases from a MEDLINE review (1960-2000) are reviewed. RBF must be included in the differential diagnosis of febri

Detection of rodent-borne parasitic pathogens of wild rats in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia: A potential threat to human health.

Rodent species, such as Rattus rattus diardii and Rattus norvegicus are invasive species of wild rats that serve as potential reservoirs of important human's pathogens. Parasitic zoonosis accounts for over 60% of all human infectious diseases worldwide. This situation arises from the recent changes in the global climate and ecosystem composition, which led to the spread of rodents and rodent-borne pathogens globally. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of rodent's parasites and their zoonotic potentials in some selected areas in UPM. Rodents were captured using live-traps and

Oh rats! Fever, rash and arthritis in a young woman.

A 17-year-old girl presented with worsening right-sided hip and low back pain for 2 days. She had also experienced intermittent fevers and a recurring maculopapular rash over the past 2 weeks. Social history revealed the presence of three domestic rats living in the girl's home. Blood cultures returned positive for Streptobacillus moniliformis, the causative agent of rat-bite fever. Rat-bite fever often goes undiagnosed, as the clinical presentation is non-specific. Untreated, the infection can result in death due to sepsis or endocarditis. The bacterium is generally susceptible to penicillin

Serious Rodent Bites to an 8-Month-Old Infant Due to Child Neglect.

Animal bites are among the top causes of preventable traumatic injuries. We describe the case of an 8-month-old female infant who was brought to the emergency department by her grandfather with serious rodent bites on her eyes, nose, right cheek, upper right extremity, and other smaller bites all over her body. This case is another proof of child neglect, or a possible infanticide attempt, as the motives of leaving the child in a hut without proper care, are not cleared up to this date. Rodent bites could be associated with Streptobacillus moniliformis infection and rat-bite fever. If the bite

Rat bite fever: a misnomer?

We report a case of rat bite fever (Streptobacillus moniliformis) in a young man who presented generally unwell with pyrexia, vomiting, arthralgia and deranged liver function. Two weeks before his illness he had disposed of a dead rat but was not bitten by it. This zoonotic infection was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics and he made a complete recovery. It is a rarely diagnosed but likely common infection given the frequent contact between humans and rodents. In the past, confirmation of the organism has been difficult due its dislike of culture mediums, but the advent of polymerase chai

Some experimental approaches to the study of nutrition and parasitic infection.

Two experimental models to examine the relationship between host nutrition and parasitic infection are considered. Moniliformis dubius, an acanthocephalan parasite of the laboratory rat, is dependent on the type and amount of host dietary carbohydrate for growth and reproduction. Starch, glucose, fructose, and mannose in host diets support parasite growth and development, but much lower dietary amounts of starch, fructose, and mannose are needed compared to free glucose. The pig-Ascaris suum relationship is considered as a model for human ascariasis. Experimental Ascaris infections in pigs res

Rats, cities, people, and pathogens: a systematic review and narrative synthesis of literature regarding the ecology of rat-associated zoonoses in urban centers.

Urban Norway and black rats (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus) are the source of a number of pathogens responsible for significant human morbidity and mortality in cities around the world. These pathogens include zoonotic bacteria (Leptospira interrogans, Yersina pestis, Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella spp., Streptobacillus moniliformis), viruses (Seoul hantavirus), and parasites (Angiostrongylus cantonensis). A more complete understanding of the ecology of these pathogens in people and rats is critical for determining the public health risks associated with urban rats and for developing strat

Delayed Emergency Department Diagnosis of Rat-Bite Fever.

Rat bite fever, caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus, is a zoonotic infection with increasing prevalence as more people keep rats as pets. It is a challenging diagnosis due to a broad range of symptomatology, and its causative organisms are difficult to culture. As such, it may be necessary to be diagnosed presumptively in the appropriate clinical context. This report details a case where diagnosis was presumptively made on a second emergency department presentation after no diagnosis was made on the first presentation. The patient in this case presented with fever, rash,

[New awareness for zoonoses using the example of rat bite fever : Case report and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Rat bite fever is a rare but potentially fatal bacterial zoonosis. The symptoms can be unspecific, but severe sepsis can be associated with involvement of different organs. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old homeless man presented with fever, suspected meningitis, acute renal failure, unclear skin lesions as well as joint problems and muscular pain. Bite wounds were not detected. Meningitis could be excluded after lumbar puncture, and there was no evidence of endocarditis as the cause of the skin lesions. After 72 h, growth of Streptobacillus moniliformis in blood cultures was detected. C
