Carbon‑nitrogen compounds, alcohols, mercaptans, monoterpenes, acetates, aldehydes, ketones, SF6, PH3, and other fire gases in coal-mining waste heaps of Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Poland) - a re-investigation by means of in situ FTIR external database approach.

Coal-fire gas jets emanating from waste heaps are chemically very complex and variable mixtures, as proved by our former studies. The current paper is a result of further exploration of the GASMET FTIR system via an iterative external databases search. This allowed to pinpoint a number of subsequent chemicals, both in terms of (semi)quantitative analysis and occurrence probability (fit). Some compounds represent new finds. The most likely candidates found, with fit often >90%, are CN compounds - especially hydrogen cyanide and isocyanic acid; acetylene, various alcohols, monoterpenes, formic a

Geraniol targets KV1.3 ion channel and exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and in vivo.

Naturally occurring monoterpenes are known for their various pharmacological activities including anti-inflammation. KV1.3 ion channel is a voltage-gated potassium channel and has been validated as a drug target for autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases like psoriasis. Here we experimentally test the direct interaction between monoterpenes and KV1.3 ion channel. Our electrophysiological analysis determined that monoterpenes (geraniol, nerol, β-citronellol, citral and linalool) have inhibitory effects on KV1.3 ion channel. Representatively, geraniol reversibly blocked KV1.3 currents in a

Identification of extremely low-terpene-emitting variants from an urban greening tree species Quercus myrsinifolia.

Terpene-emitting plants may risk air quality and agricultural yields by increasing tropospheric ozone with nitrogen oxides. However, the number of non- or low-terpene-emitting species is limited, leading to a potential trade-off in species diversity when air quality considerations are prioritized for afforestation and urban greening. To expand the available choices, developing non- or extremely low-terpene-emitting cultivars from species with high-terpene emissions could be a feasible solution. In this study, we observed terpene emissions from multiple individuals of a common afforestation tre

Nutrient-rich plants emit a less intense blend of volatile isoprenoids.

The emission of isoprenoids (e.g. isoprene and monoterpenes) by plants plays an important defensive role against biotic and abiotic stresses. Little is known, however, about the functional traits linked to species-specific variability in the types and rates of isoprenoids emitted and about possible co-evolution of functional traits with isoprenoid emission type (isoprene emitter, monoterpene emitter or both). We combined data for isoprene and monoterpene emission rates per unit dry mass with key functional traits (foliar nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, and leaf mass per area) a

A Blend of Ethanol and (-)-α-Pinene were Highly Attractive to Native Siricid Woodwasps (Siricidae, Siricinae) Infesting Conifers of the Sierra Nevada and the Allegheny Mountains.

Woodwasps in Sirex and related genera are well-represented in North American conifer forests, but the chemical ecology of native woodwasps is limited to a few studies demonstrating their attraction to volatile host tree compounds, primarily monoterpene hydrocarbons and monoterpene alcohols. Thus, we systematically investigated woodwasp-host chemical interactions in California's Sierra Nevada and West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. We first tested common conifer monoterpene hydrocarbons and found that (-)-α-pinene, (+)-3-carene, and (-)-β-pinene were the three most attractive compounds. Based

An experimental comparison of a kinetic model for the reaction of alpha-pinene and Delta(3)-carene with ozone and nitrogen oxides.

UNLABELLED: A kinetic model was compiled to simulate reactions of the monoterpenes, alpha-pinene and Delta(3)-carene, with O(3), NO(2) and NO. The influence of different initial settings of O(3), NO(2) and NO on the monoterpene reaction was evaluated. At initial levels of 75 p.p.b. of O(3), NO(2) and NO each, 1.5% of alpha-pinene and 1.1% of Delta(3)-carene were calculated to react after 215 s. The corresponding experimental results showed that 9.3-12.2% of alpha-pinene and 9.9-11.7% of Delta(3)-carene reacted. The calculated levels of O(3), NO(2) and NO were compared to experimental measureme

Does green mean clean? Volatile organic emissions from regular versus green cleaning products.

Cleaning products emit a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including some which are hazardous or can undergo chemical transformations to generate harmful secondary pollutants. In recent years, "green" cleaners have become increasingly popular, with an implicit assumption that these are better for our health and/or the environment. However, there is no strong evidence to suggest that they are better for indoor air quality compared to regular products. In this study, the VOC composition of 10 regular and 13 green cleaners was examined by headspace analysis. Monoterpenes were the most p

Evaluation of IMS drift tube temperature on the peak shape of high boiling fragrance compounds towards allergen detection in complex cosmetic products and essential oils.

Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) has recently gained increasing attention for the analysis of volatile compounds due to its high sensitivity, selectivity, and robust design. Peak shape distortion, including peak tailing or broadening, are well known challenges in chromatographic analysis that result in peak asymmetry and decreased resolution. However, in IMS analysis peak tailing, which is independent on the column separation technique, have also been observed. As high boiling substances, such as monoterpenes, are mainly affected by enlarged peak tailing in GC-IMS, we prop

Increase of the indoor concentration of volatile organic compounds after the use of incense and scented candle in studio apartments determined using passive sampling.

Burning incenses and scented candles may provide harmful chemicals. Although many studies have evaluated volatile organic chemicals emitted by their use and related health risks, extension of our understanding for guiding appropriate use under various use conditions is necessary. In this study, emission characteristics of commercial incenses and scented candles were evaluated in a laboratory chamber using real-time measurement and the time-weighted average exposure concentrations of monoaromatic compounds and monoterpenes were assessed using passive samplers while volunteers living in a studio

Seasonal Variation in Chemical Constituents and Bioactivity of Ageratina adenophora.

Ageratina adenophora (A. adenophora) is a globally invasive plant with strong ecological adaptability. To elucidate its adaptive chemical basis and seasonal dynamics of bioactive constituents, this study used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to analyze volatile oils and ethanol extracts from the aerial tissues of A. adenophora across four seasons. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was applied to link seasonal metabolites with antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Essential oils contained monoterpenes and ses

Essential Oils from Colombian Plants: Antiviral Potential against Dengue Virus Based on Chemical Composition, In Vitro and In Silico Analyses.

Currently, there are no therapies to prevent severe dengue disease. Essential oils (EOs) can serve as primary sources for research and the discovery of phytomedicines for alternative therapy. Fourteen EOs samples were obtained by distillation from six plants used in Colombian folk medicine. GC/MS analysis identified 125 terpenes. Cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction assays revealed differences in antiviral activity. EOs of Lippia alba, citral chemotype and carvone-rich fraction; Lippia origanoides, phellandrene chemotype; and Turnera diffusa, exhibited strong antiviral activity (IC50: 29 to 82 µg

Potentiation of antifungal activity of terbinafine by dihydrojasmone and terpinolene against dermatophytes.

Dermatophytoses are infections that affect keratinized tissues. Their main etiologic agents are fungi of the genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. The emergence of resistant fungi and the clinical relevance of dermatophytosis have encouraged studies that aim to increase the arsenal of drugs or act on mechanisms that confer multiple drug resistance. This study investigated the modulating activity of terbinafine promoted by dihydrojasmone and terpinolene against Microsporum canis LM 216, Trichophyton interdigitale H6 and T. interdigitale Δmdr2. Chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oil of Skimmia laureola leaves.

The composition of the essential oil from leaves of Skimmia laureola was determined by GC and GC-MS. Twenty-eight components were identified, accounting for 93.9% of the total oil. The oil is mainly composed of monoterpenes (93.5%), of which monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes represent 11.0% and 82.5%, respectively. Sesquiterpenes constitute only 0.3% of the total oil. Linalyl acetate is the main component (50.5%), with linalool (13.1%), geranyl acetate (8.5%) and cis-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (6.2%) as other principal constituents. The essential oil showed a significant antispasmodi

Jingle bells, what are those smells? Indoor VOC emissions from a live Christmas tree.

Every year in the United States conifers are purchased to serve as Christmas trees in homes where they emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the indoor environment. Although many studies have measured the ecosystem-level emissions of VOCs from conifers outdoors (characterizing monoterpene, isoprene, and aldehyde emissions), little is known about VOC emission rates once a conifer is brought indoors. Using a proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometer we characterized the VOCs emitted from a freshly cut Douglas Fir for 17 days in an environmentally controlled chamber. Ozone injections were al

Selecting goats for juniper consumption did not improve their liver Phase I detoxification.

A sodium pentobarbital-induced sleep time study was conducted on 15 adult intact male Boer × Spanish goats selected for high (J+, n = 7) or low (J-, n = 8) juniper consumption (estimated breeding values of 13.1 ± 1.0 and -14.3 ± 0.8, respectively; mean ± standard deviation). Pentobarbital sleep time is an in vivo assay of Phase I hepatic metabolism that can be induced by exposure to barbiturates and monoterpenes. Monoterpenes and pentobarbital are initially oxidized by this pathway; thus, we hypothesized that J+ goats would have shorter sleep times than J- goats. Time to the righting reflex af

Enhanced efficacy of carvacrol and thymol in combination with benzalkonium chloride for the control of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.

The control of Rhipicephalus microplus represents a major challenge for livestock production due to the widespread emergence of tick populations resistant to conventional acaricides, highlighting the need for alternative strategies capable of improving control efficacy. Bioactive constituents of essential oils, such as the phenolic monoterpenes carvacrol and thymol, have demonstrated acaricidal activity, although their performance may vary depending on formulation and exposure conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of carvacrol and thymol in combination with the cationic surfactan

Perception of noxious compounds by contact chemoreceptors of the blowfly, Phormia regina: putative role of an odorant-bindingpProtein.

The blowfly, Phormia regina, has sensilla with four contact-chemoreceptor cells and one mechanoreceptor cell on its labellum. Three of the four chemoreceptor cells are called the sugar, the salt and the water receptor cells, respectively. However, the specificity of the remaining chemoreceptor cell, traditionally called the "fifth cell", has not yet been clarified. Referring to behavioral evaluation of the oral toxicity of monoterpenes, we measured the electrophysiological response of the "fifth cell" to these compounds. Of all the monoterpenes examined, D-limonene exhibited the strongest oral
