Social class differences in male mortality in New Zealand were investigated separately for Maori, Pacific Island and other New Zealand males aged 15-64. All three groups displayed strong social class mortality gradients but, for each class, the Maori mortality rates were approximately 50% higher than the rates for the "other" category, while the Pacific Islander rates generally occupied an intermediate position. The Maori mortality rates were particularly high for the disease groupings of respiratory diseases, infectious diseases, genito-urinary diseases, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic d

CONTEXT: Hip fractures incur high morbidity and mortality. Data on secular trends in mortality from hip fractures and risk predictive models are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe secular trends in 30-day mortality after hip fracture surgery from the 2011-2017 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database, identify preoperative and on-discharge predictors of 30-day mortality, and develop risk calculators.
METHODS: We calculated yearly proportions of deaths and examined survival using Kaplan-Meier curves. We implemented logistic regressions models, using SPSS and created calculato

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality in French Guiana, a French overseas territory, is 2.7 times greater than in mainland France. Given the importance of better understanding infant mortality we aimed to describe the early & late neonatal, and postneonatal mortality in French Guiana between 2007 and 2022.
METHODS: We used data from the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques to describe trends and performed survival analysis.
RESULTS: Overall, there were 1 073 deaths before one year of age, of which 297 (27.7 %) occurred on the first day of life. The overall proportion of early

There are inconsistent data on mortality rates in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP). Trends in mortality in BP throughout the years are yet to be established. The aim of the present study was to study the mortality in BP patients relative to the general population and to estimate trends in standardized mortality over the past 30 years. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies in Medline, Embase and Scopus (1823-2017). Reference lists of included studies were also searched for eligible studies. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Sc

AIM: We conducted a matched-cohort study to assess mortality in schizophrenia and the relationship of mortality with comorbid somatic conditions and suicide attempts.
METHOD: A full-population register-based prospective matched-cohort study was performed including all eligible patients with schizophrenia in Hungary between 01/01/2005 and 31/12/2013. Control subjects were individually matched to patients with schizophrenia at a 5:1 ratio. The principal outcome measure was death due to any reason. A non-parametric approach was used for descriptive statistical purposes, the Kaplan-Meier model fo

This study sought to determine nationally representative estimates of mortality from or with dementia in the United States, to compare rates derived from various sources of ascertainment, and to estimate the contribution of dementia to morbidity and facility usage in the last year of life. National Mortality Followback Survey (NMFS) data were analyzed. The NMFS is based on a nationwide probability sample of persons aged 25 and over who died in the United States in 1986. For sampled decedents, information was obtained from death certificates, detailed questionnaires and interviews of family mem

The present study, the ninth in a series that began in 1961, extends the time of surveillance 3 more years and covers the period 1950-1985. It is based on the recently revised doses, termed the DS86. The impact of the change from the T65D to the DS86 on the dose-response relationships for cancer mortality was described in the first of this series of reports. Here, the focus is on cancer mortality among the 76,000 A-bomb survivors within the LSS sample for whom DS86 doses have been estimated, with the emphasis on biological issues associated with radiation carcinogenesis. Briefly, the following

BACKGROUND: Patients requiring coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) have multiple co-morbidities which need to be considered in totality when determining surgical risks. The objective of this study is to evaluate short-term and long-term mortality rates of CABG surgery, as well as to identify the most significant risk factors for mortality after isolated CABG.
METHODS: All patients with complete dataset who underwent isolated CABG between January 2008 and December 2017 were included. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression was performed to determine the risk factors for all-cause mortali

OBJECTIVES: Fournier's gangrene is an aggressive, rapidly progressing, and life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal and genital regions. Various scoring systems have been developed for predicting survival and prognosis in Fournier's gangrene. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly developed Fournier's gangrene mortality index (FGMI) in predicting mortality associated with Fournier's gangrene.
METHODS: The study included patients over the age of 18 years who were followed-up with a diagnosis of Fournier's gangrene in the general surgery clinics

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation is the main environmental risk factor responsible for the development of skin cancer. Other occupational, socioeconomic, and environmental factors appear to be related to the risk of skin cancer. Furthermore, the factors appear to differ for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). The purpose of this study is to analyze mortality rates of skin cancer in the different provinces of Spain and to determine the influence of socioeconomic conditions and other environmental and demographic factors in rates.
METHODS: Deaths from melanoma and NMSC in the period

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone's child and maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the world. However, little is known about the causes of premature mortality in the country. To rectify this, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation of Sierra Leone launched the Sierra Leone Sample Registration System (SL-SRS) of births and deaths. Here, we report cause-specific mortality from the first SL-SRS round, representing deaths from 2018 to 2020.
METHODS: The Countrywide Mortality Surveillance for Action platform established the SL-SRS, which involved conducting electronic verbal autopsies in 678 ran

OBJECTIVES: Early mortality after hip fracture surgery is high and preoperative risk assessment for the individual patient is challenging. A risk model could identify patients in need of more intensive perioperative care, provide insight in the prognosis, and allow for risk adjustment in audits. This study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction model for 30-day mortality after hip fracture surgery: the Hip fracture Estimator of Mortality Amsterdam (HEMA).
METHODS: Data on 1050 consecutive patients undergoing hip fracture surgery between 2004 and 2010 were retrospectively collected an

INTRODUCTION: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) risk prediction models are used to compare outcomes for quality improvement initiatives, benchmarking, and research. While such models provide robust tools in high-income countries, an ICU risk prediction model has not been validated in a low-income country where ICU population characteristics are different from those in high-income countries, and where laboratory-based patient data are often unavailable. We sought to validate the Mortality Probability Admission Model, version III (MPM0-III) in two public ICUs in Rwanda and to develop a new Rwanda Mortal

The objective of this study was to assess whether an increasing severity of sleep apnoea is associated with increased all-cause mortality hazards and to assess whether the syndrome is associated with excess mortality, in comparison with the general population. Participants included 14,589 adult males, aged 20-93 yrs, referred to the sleep clinics with suspected sleep apnoea or diagnosed with sleep apnoea. Altogether, 372 deaths were recorded after a median follow-up of 4.6 yrs. The crude all-cause mortality rate was 5.55/1,000 patient yrs, increasing with apnoea severity. Cox proportional anal

A sample of 380 female deaths in the age group 15-49 years from 16 provinces of the Lao People's Democratic Republic were analyzed to determine the most likely cause of death. 127 deaths were classified as maternal, 28% occurred during pregnancy and the remaining 72% within six weeks of the termination of pregnancy. Almost three quarters of all maternal deaths were directly related to obstetrical complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Many of these deaths could probably have been avoided, if appropriate obstetric care had been available. The level of attention to problems related to mat

While an earlier report on the Texaco Mortality Study cohort showed no statistically significant elevations for any cause of death for the white males, it did not preclude any excess risk of mortality within subgroups of workers. In this study, an employee's complete job history was used to determine his work categories, and patterns of mortality were examined for the more common job categories. All of the job categories examined showed deficits for mortality overall, and the patterns seen were similar to those for the entire cohort. Significant elevations were seen in pancreas cancer mortalit

OBJECTIVES: Health economic models commonly apply observed general population mortality rates to simulate future deaths in a cohort. This is potentially problematic, because mortality statistics are records of the past, not predictions for the future. We propose a new dynamic general population mortality modeling approach, which enables analysts to implement predictions of future changes in mortality rates. The potential implications of moving from a conventional static approach to a dynamic approach are illustrated using a case study.
METHODS: The model utilized in National Institute for Hea

BACKGROUND: The fifth Millennium Development Goal (MDG-5) aimed to improve maternal health, targeting a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) reduction of 75% between 1990 and 2015. The objective of this study was to identify all maternal deaths in Suriname, determine the extent of underreporting, estimate the reduction, audit the maternal deaths and assess underlying causes and substandard care factors.
METHODS: A reproductive age mortality survey was conducted in Suriname (South-American upper-middle income country) between 2010 and 2014 to identify all maternal deaths in the country. MMR was comp
