Darwin, in the tropical north of Australia, is subject to high numbers of mosquitoes and several mosquito-borne diseases. Many of Darwin's residential areas were built in close proximity to tidally influenced swamps, where long-term storm-water run-off from nearby residences into these swamps has led to anthropogenic induced ecological change. When natural wet-dry cycles were disrupted, bare mud-flats and mangroves were transformed into perennial fresh to brackish-water reed swamps. Reed swamps provided year-round breeding habitat for many mosquito species, such that mosquito abundance was les

BACKGROUND: Traps baited with synthetic human odors have been proposed as suitable technologies for controlling malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. We investigated the potential benefits of such traps for preventing malaria transmission in Africa and the essential characteristics that they should possess so as to be effective.
METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: An existing mathematical model was reformulated to distinguish availability of hosts for attack by mosquitoes from availability of blood per se. This adaptation allowed the effects of pseudo-hosts such as odor-baited mosquito traps

Differences in mosquito control practices at the local level involve the interplay of place, scale and politics. During the Chicago West Nile Virus (WNV) outbreak of 2002, mosquito abatement districts represent distinct suburban clusters of human WNV cases, independent of characteristics of the local population, housing and physical environment. We examine how the contrasting actions of four districts reveal a distinct local politics of mosquito control that may have contributed to local-scale geographic differences in WNV incidence. This politics is rooted in political, economic and philosoph

Trypsin synthesis and secretion is induced after the female mosquito takes a blood meal. Its peak activity has been shown to be proportional to the amount and quality of food uptake. Further regulatory elements, hormones from the brain and the ovary, increase the synthethic rate of trypsin in the midgut by a factor of two. We investigated the temporal effect of removing the humoral factors by decapitation and ovariectomy. Trypsin synthesis was reduced to less than half its normal output when the operations were performed prior, or immediately after the blood meal. Postponing decapitation resul

Dengue remains a major public health challenge, and national strategies for Aedes control vary widely across countries. This review synthesizes official national guidelines from 14 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific to identify shared priorities and key differences. Most guidelines emphasize integrated vector management frameworks, combining environmental, chemical, and biological measures, alongside strong community engagement and structured surveillance systems. Several countries incorporate digital tools, adult mosquito monitoring, or innovative approaches such as Wolba

Mosquito-borne diseases are an emerging public health challenge in Europe, driven by the spread of invasive mosquito species capable of sustaining outbreaks of tropical arboviral diseases. Rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, human-driven habitat changes, and prolonged transmission seasons have increased the risk of dengue, chikungunya, and West Nile virus outbreaks, among other vector-borne diseases. Effective control requires a multifaceted approach, combining traditional and novel methods with advanced surveillance technologies and community involvement. However, growing in

Despite great leaps forward in preventing and treating malaria, several challenges, including insecticide resistance, have hindered progress in fighting the disease. Thus, there is a pressing need for new tools to control malaria, including the use of genetically modified mosquitoes (GMMs) in the field. Various genetic strategies for vector control are currently explored, ranging from self-sustaining GMMs with unrestricted geographic and temporal spread to self-limiting alternatives. Here, we describe a self-limiting gene drive strategy called Male Drive Female Sterile (MDFS) targeting Anophel

Mosquitoes act as vectors of pathogens that cause most life-threatening diseases, such as malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow fever, Zika, West Nile, Lymphatic filariasis, etc. To reduce the transmission of these mosquito-borne diseases in humans, several chemical, biological, mechanical, and pharmaceutical methods of control are used. However, these different strategies are facing important and timely challenges that include the rapid spread of highly invasive mosquitoes worldwide, the development of resistance in several mosquito species, and the recent outbreaks of novel arthropod-borne vi

Predators and their interactions with target prey influence the efficiency of control strategies. In the present study, we demonstrate the implementation of natural predator selection for controlling dengue vectors in northern Vietnam through field-based observation of aquatic insect predators in natural habitats and lab-based assessment of predatorial capacities for several aquatic insect predators. The selected species was then used to evaluate the predatory-prey interaction using functional responses (FRs) toward 3rd- and 4th-instar larvae of four major medical mosquito species (Aedes aegyp

Climate variability is highly impacting on mosquito-borne diseases causing malaria and dengue fever across the globe. Seasonal variability change in temperature and rainfall patterns are impacting on human health. Mosquitoes cause diseases like dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria, Chikungunya, West Nile and Japanese encephalitis. According to estimations by health organizations, annually one million human deaths are caused by vector-borne diseases, and dengue fever has increased about 30-fold over the past 50 years. Similarly, over 200 million cases of malaria are being reported annually. Mosq

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of four complementary and combined strategies to minimize the presence of the invasive mosquito Aedes albopictus, firmly established in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Catalonia, Spain. A quasi-experimental design including six neighbourhoods was performed in 2008-2009. The abundance of mosquitoes was monitored through ovitraps. The multiple intervention strategy consisted of four actions: source reduction; larvicide treatments (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and diflubenzuron); adulticide treatments (alfacipermetrin); and cleaning up uncontro

Malaria continues to pose significant public health issues globally. This disease is primarily spread through the bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes that are infected with the Plasmodium parasites. While conventional vector control strategies such as insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) have significantly reduced malaria burden, their long-term effectiveness is increasingly compromised by widespread insecticide resistance. Recent research has proposed manipulation of the Anopheles gut microbiome as a complementary malaria control strategy; however, the stren

Mosquito-borne viruses are a growing global threat. Initial viral inoculation occurs in the skin via the mosquito 'bite', eliciting immune responses that shape the establishment of infection and pathogenesis. Here we assess the cutaneous innate and adaptive immune responses to controlled Aedes aegypti feedings in humans living in Aedes-endemic areas. In this single-arm, cross-sectional interventional study (trial registration #NCT04350905), we enroll 30 healthy adult participants aged 18 to 45 years of age from Cambodia between October 2020 and January 2021. We perform 3-mm skin biopsies at ba

BACKGROUND: Blood-sucking insects incorporate many times their body weight of blood in a single meal. Because proteins are the major component of vertebrate blood, its digestion in the gut generates extremely high concentrations of free amino acids. Previous reports showed that the tyrosine degradation pathway plays an essential role in adapting these animals to blood feeding. Inhibition of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), the rate-limiting step of tyrosine degradation, results in the death of insects after a blood meal. Therefore, it has been suggested that compounds that block the

BACKGROUND: High coverage of personal protection measures that kill mosquitoes dramatically reduce malaria transmission where vector populations depend upon human blood. However, most primary malaria vectors outside of sub-Saharan Africa can be classified as "very zoophagic," meaning they feed occasionally (<10% of blood meals) upon humans, so personal protection interventions have negligible impact upon their survival.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We extended a published malaria transmission model to examine the relationship between transmission, control, and the baseline proportion of bloodmeals o

Arthropod-borne diseases caused by a variety of microorganisms such as dengue virus and malaria parasites afflict billions of people worldwide imposing major economic and social burdens. Despite many efforts, vaccines against diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, with the exception of yellow fever, are not available. Control of such infectious pathogens is mainly performed by vector management and treatment of affected individuals with drugs. However, the numbers of insecticide-resistant insects and drug-resistant parasites are increasing. Therefore, inspired in recent years by a lot of new data

Malaria remains a significant public health burden in Cameroon, with high prevalence in the North Region. The success of control strategies depends on community understanding and practices. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards malaria and mosquitoes in the region. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2021 using structured questionnaires with 500 households across 50 randomly selected villages. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Malaria awareness was universal (100%), nearly all respondents (99.6%) correctly identified mosquito bit

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are vectors for dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses, which threaten over half the world's population. Therefore, new techniques are needed to control vector mosquitoes. The present study aimed to control female Ae. aegypti by targeting 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and ecdysone receptor (EcR), which could potentially disrupt egg development, using sulfasalazine (SSZ)-double-stranded RNA (ds-RNA) nanoparticles (NPs).
METHODS: The SSZ-dsRNA NPs are characterized by light microscopy, field emission scanning electron micro
