Mosquito host-seeking activity was studied using a custom-designed trap to explore: (1) at which time interval of the night adult mosquito abatement would be most effective, and (2) if there exists an avian-specific host-seeking preference. Overnight trials using traps baited with dry ice showed that Aedes taeniorhynchus (Wiedemann) was most active at dusk and was then captured throughout the night. In contrast, Culex spp. (Cx. pipiens (Linnaeus) and Cx. restuans (Theobald) delayed most activity until about two h after dusk and were then captured through the night. This pattern suggests that m

The use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) is one of the most feasible weapons available for malaria control in Africa today. One of the important requirements for ITN use is regular re-treatment at an appropriate time. As a response to the low re-treatment rate when the ITN users are expected to purchase insecticide and re-treat their nets, manufacturers have developed long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) that are pre-treated in the factory, and are claimed to require no further treatment during their lifespan. A study was conducted to assess the possible effects of number of washings, frequ

BACKGROUND: The mosquito net existed long before it was known that mosquitoes transmitted malaria. Therefore it was not intended for malaria control.
OBJECTIVES: To scrutinise the patterns of prevalence and identify any hitherto unknown factors that could explain the findings.
METHODS: Retrieval of records on malaria prevalence.
FINDINGS: Households sprayed in the previous 12 months or owning at least one ITN: 77.8% and IRS: 31.6% in mid-northern districts. Paradoxically, this was the highest malaria prevalence at 80.1%, hence the phenomenon of diminishing-returns. The urban children (28.6%

Many infectious diseases cannot be transmitted from human to human directly, and the transmission needs to be done via a vector. It is well known that vectors' life cycles are highly dependent on their living environment. In order to investigate dynamics of vector-borne diseases under environment influence, we propose a vector-borne disease model with almost periodic coefficients. We derive the basic reproductive number [Formula: see text] for this model and establish a threshold type result on its global dynamics in terms of [Formula: see text]. As an illustrative example, we consider an almo

BACKGROUND: Non-inferiority trials are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to demonstrate that health products show comparable efficacy to that of existing standard of care. As part of the WHO Global Malaria Programme (GMP) process of assessment of malaria vector control products, a second-in-class insecticide-treated net (ITN) must be shown to be non-inferior to a first-in-class product based on mosquito mortality. The public health impact of the first-in-class pyrethroid-piperonyl butoxide (PBO) ITN, Olyset® Plus, has been demonstrated in epidemiological trials in areas with i

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles that represents a significant global health challenge, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. In malaria-endemic areas, malaria control programmes have widely adopted long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) as primary protection strategies against mosquito bites to interrupt transmission. To achieve maximum efficiency with these tools, proper community orientation through Health Education and Social Mobilization Strategies (HESMS) is necessary. This study

Malaria remains a significant public health burden in Cameroon, with high prevalence in the North Region. The success of control strategies depends on community understanding and practices. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards malaria and mosquitoes in the region. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2021 using structured questionnaires with 500 households across 50 randomly selected villages. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Malaria awareness was universal (100%), nearly all respondents (99.6%) correctly identified mosquito bit

In a study carried out in the Ghassreghand Division (Baluchistan, Iran) from March through November 1995, efficacy of cyfluthrin-impregnated bednets was compared to that of untreated nets, in relation to malaria control. Ten villages with a total population of 4,572 and 3 villages with a total population of 1,935 were used as treatment and control, respectively. The collection, impregnation (target dosage of 40 mg active ingredient [AI]/m2), and redistribution of the nets (9% nylon, 52% light cotton, 30% medium cotton, and 9% heavy cotton), carried out in mid-April, were done by local health w

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases are still a major health risk in many developing countries, and the emergence of multi-insecticide-resistant mosquitoes is threatening the future of vector control. Therefore, new tools that can manage resistant mosquitoes are required. Laboratory studies show that entomopathogenic fungi can kill insecticide-resistant malaria vectors but this needs to be verified in the field.
METHODS: The present study investigated whether these fungi will be effective at infecting, killing and/or modifying the behaviour of wild multi-insecticide-resistant West African mos

With the climate changing and worsening rainfall patterns, dengue, and its vector, the Aedes spp. mosquito, are becoming an urgent matter both in Colombia and globally. The limited availability of vaccines for this arbovirus, combined with the risk of severe disease with each reinfection, means that dengue control primarily relies on targeted vector control tailored to specific areas. This study aims to analyze the social perceptions and environmental risk factors that affect mosquito presence and dengue acquisition in Restrepo, Meta, Colombia. A knowledge, attitudes and practices questionnair

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are essential for malaria control, but their effectiveness is threatened by increasing resistance of Anopheles to pyrethroids. In 2021, Côte d'Ivoire distributed both standard and new-generation LLINs during its mass distribution campaign. This study assessed the physical integrity and residual efficacy of these nets 3 y after their distribution.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 10 health districts chosen for ecological diversity. A total of 570 LLINs were withdrawn from randomly selected households and evaluated through WHO

Nets treated with lambdacyhalothrin 15 mg a.i./m2 were distributed in four villages of Korhogo area in northern Côte-d'Ivoire, and four other villages without nets were followed as controls. Mosquitoes were collected every three months from June 1999 to August 2000 in the villages, and then tested to determine their genotypes for kdr mutation L1014F conferring cross-resistance to pyrethroids and DDT and for M and S molecular forms of Anopheles gambiae s.s. The frequencies of the resistant allele at kdr mutation L1014F locus were very high and they varied from 0.82 to 0.96. Before the trial, th

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem, with over half of the world's population, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, at risk. Climate change is already affecting the prevalence of malaria, in part by altering the distribution and density of mosquito vectors. This study assessed the relationship between climate variables and mosquito species distribution on malaria prevalence in Kenya from January 2019 to June 2021.
METHODS: Data from 23 Kenyan counties were analyzed using mixed-effect regression, spatial analysis, correlation analysis, and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selectio

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic nasal disease characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and turbinates. Occasionally, nasal myiasis complicates AR. This case illustrates an uncommon complication of nasal myiasis, palatal perforation. A 35-year-old South Asian woman presented with recurrent bilateral epistaxis and expulsion of maggots from the nose. She had a history of nasal obstruction, foul-smelling nasal discharge, and anosmia. On examination, the patient had atrophied nasal turbinates and later developed 2 perforations in the palate. She was offered conservative management for AR. B

Anopheles coustani has long been recognized as a secondary malaria vector in Africa. It has recently been involved in the transmission of both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax in Madagascar. As most secondary malaria vectors, An. coustani mainly bites outdoors, which renders the control of this mosquito species difficult using classical malaria control measures, such as the use of bed nets or indoor residual spraying of insecticides. For a better understanding of the biology and vector competence of a vector species, it is useful to rear the species in the laboratory. The absence of a colony

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a global disease burden, especially in Africa, with Nigeria having the highest prevalence of malaria, with approximately 50% affecting children. Children under five years of age are vulnerable to the risk of malaria spread. This research aimed to identify the determinants of malaria spread among children under the age of 5 in Nigeria.
METHODS: This study used national malaria indicator survey data from 2021 (2021NMIS). The NMIS was implemented by the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), and data were collected between 12 October and 4 December 2021. This study

BACKGROUND: Eliminating malaria requires vector control interventions that dramatically reduce adult mosquito population densities and survival rates. Indoor applications of insecticidal nets and sprays are effective against an important minority of mosquito species that rely heavily upon human blood and habitations for survival. However, complementary approaches are needed to tackle a broader diversity of less human-specialized vectors by killing them at other resource targets.
METHODS: Impacts of strategies that target insecticides to humans or animals can be rationalized in terms of biolog

A decade-long decline in malaria cases has plateaued, primarily due to parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides used in bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Here, we explore the innovative control strategy targeting Plasmodium with antimalarials during the mosquito stages. This strategy has the potential to reduce the risk of resistance emerging because a relatively small population of parasites within the mosquito is subject to selection. After validating mosquito feeding strategies, we screened a range of parasiticidal compounds by feeding them to mosquitoes already
