Discrimination of edible and noxious food is crucial for survival in all organisms. We have studied the physiology of the gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) in contact chemosensilla (insect gustatory organs) located on the antennae of the moth Heliothis virescens, emphasizing putative phagostimulants and deterrents. Sucrose and the 2 bitter substances quinine and sinigrin elicited responses in a larger proportion of GRNs than inositol, KCl, NaCl, and ethanol, and the firing thresholds were lowest for sucrose and quinine. Variations in GRN composition in individual sensilla occurred without any

Germination of conidia of Entomophaga maimaiga, an important fungal pathogen of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, was investigated on water agar and larval cuticle at varying densities. Percent germination was positively associated with conidial density on water agar but not on larval cuticle. When conidia were showered onto water agar, the rate of germination was much slower than on the cuticle of L. dispar larvae. From the same conidial showers, the resulting conidial densities on water agar were much higher than those on larval cuticle in part because many conidia adhered to setae and did not r

A baculovirus isolated from the moth Glena bisulca was characterized by electron microscopy of its occlusion bodies (OBs) and sequencing of its genome. The OBs of this virus, Glena bisulca granulovirus isolate 1002 (GlbiGV-1002), were ovocylindrical with a single virion, as described for other betabaculoviruses. The 104,702 bp circular genome contained six direct repeat (dr) regions and 121 open reading frames. A core gene phylogeny placed GlbiGV-1002 in betabaculovirus clade b with Cnaphalocrocis medinalis granulovirus (CnmeGV) as the nearest relative. Kimura-2-parameter nucleotide distance e

Processionary moths (Thaumetopoea spp.), particularly the oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea), are an increasingly relevant cause of allergic and toxic disease in Europe, occurring in the context of reported range expansion, changing environmental conditions and persistent contamination with airborne urticating hairs (setae). Clinical manifestations range from toxic-irritant dermatitis and ocular injury to respiratory symptoms, while a subset of exposed individuals develops genuine IgE-mediated disease, including rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, and rare cases of anaphylaxis. These

The codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., is a major oligophagous pest causing serious losses in apple and other rosaceous fruit crops. Although varietal differences in susceptibility to codling moth infestation have been reported, substantial damage may occur under inadequate management practices. The recent establishment of this pest in the apple-growing regions of Jammu and Kashmir, India, has highlighted the need for a better understanding of varietal preference and the influence of weather parameters on pest population dynamics. The present study was conducted during 2021 and 2022 in the kare

"Calling behaviour" is a stereotyped rhythmic motor pattern displayed by female moths, by which they emit the sex pheromone to attract of conspecific males. Calling occurs through a squeezing mechanism based on the turtleneck-like folding and unfolding of the ovipositor cuticle during its telescopic extensions and retractions. This mechanism is under the control of the terminal abdominal ganglion (TAG). By combining anatomical and electrophysiological approaches, here we studied the morpho-functional organisation of the abdominal muscles and the activity of motoneurons from TAG nerve N4-N6 as

Global environmental changes may cause dramatic insect declines but over century-long time series of certain species' records are rarely available for scientific research. The Menetries' Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii) appears to be the most enigmatic example among boreal insects. Although it occurs throughout the entire Eurasian taiga biome, it is so rare that less than 100 specimens were recorded since its original description in 1846. Here, we present the database, which contains nearly all available information on the species' records collected from 1840s to 2020. The data on A. menetriesi

Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus) causes the human sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. Studying gonococcal pathogenesis and developing new vaccines and therapies to combat the increasing prevalence of multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria has made use of many ex vivo models based on human cells and tissues, and in vivo vertebrate models, for example, rodent, pig and human. The focus of the current study was to examine the utility of the invertebrate greater wax moth Galleria mellonella as an in vivo model of gonococcal infection. We observed that a threshold of ~106 - 107 gonococci/larva wa

Caterpillars have many natural enemies and, therefore, have evolved a diversity of antipredator strategies. Most research focuses on those strategies (crypsis, countershading, and warning coloration) targeting visually guided predators. In contrast, defensive sounds, although documented for more than a century, have been poorly studied. We report on a novel form of sound production--chirping--in caterpillars of the common European Great Peacock moth (Saturnia pyri). Chirps are broadband, with dominant peaks ranging between the sonic (3.7 kHz) and ultrasonic (55.1 kHz) and are generated by a ra

A 3-yr field study was conducted at commercial grape (Vitis spp.) farms to evaluate insect management programs for control of the grape berry moth, Paralobesia viteana Clemens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and conservation of natural enemies. At each farm, one vineyard received only reduced-risk insecticides for control of second and third generation P. viteana, whereas the comparison vineyard received conventional insecticides. Both vineyards received a conventional insecticide application for control of first generation P. viteana and other insect pests. Monitoring with pheromone traps showed n

The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni) is an insect of medical significance in the eastern Mediterranean. This report describes three exposure cases in dogs due to ingestion of this moth's caterpillars in Israel. All three dogs were observed in direct contact with caterpillars or pinecones in infested gardens. The disease course and progression of signs were acute in all three cases, and included vomiting and severe tongue swelling. Physical examination findings included hyperthermia, tachypnoea, respiratory distress, cyanosis and tongue oedema, labial angioedema, ptyalism, bila

An experimental microsporidiosis of the wax moth caterpillars from laboratory population had been caused by oral infecting of early stages larvae and by intracavity injections of the spores of the microsporidian species Vairimorpha ephestiae. Peculiarities of microsporidiosis proceeding, manifestations of host defence reactions, and also an effect of the temperature of caterpillars cultivation and conditions of spores keeping on liability of the insects to the infection were studied. The effect of the microsporidia on the host organism was the early death or the delay of larvae development, bu

GABA-gated Cl(-) channels were studied in the nervous system of the larval tobacco hawk moth, Manduca sexta, using electrophysiology, (36)Cl(-) uptake into membrane microsacs and immunocytochemistry. A GABA-induced increase in Cl(-) conductance was recorded from a visually identifiable neurone ( fg1) in the desheathed frontal ganglion. The response was insensitive to the vertebrate GABA(A) receptor antagonist, bicuculline, but was blocked by picrotoxinin. Bicuculline-insensitive, picrotoxinin-sensitive, GABA-stimulated (36)Cl(-) uptake was also detected in membrane microsacs prepared from the

Noctuidonema dibolia n. sp., an ectoparasite of adults of the noctuid moth Mocis latipes (Guenée) is described. The differentiating characters are a club-shaped body with a subterminal vulva in the female, spicules with a reduced matrix and sheath and closely apposed dorsal and ventral arms in the male, very long stylet and conus, moderately prominent stylet knobs, a bluntly rounded head, and a large renette cell in both sexes. Lateral fields, rectum, anus, bursa, and gubernaculum are absent. Noctuidonema dibolia differs from the other species of the subfamily Noctuidonematinae in the size and

The taxonomic composition and systematic position of Agriopodes Hampson is examined through an integrated approach using adult and larval morphology, biology, and molecular sequence data. The type-species of Agriopodes, Moma fallax Herrich-Schäffer is shown to be derived within the Acronicta grisea Walker species-group; accordingly, Agriopodes is relegated to synonymy under Acronicta Ochsenheimer, syn. n. (Acronictinae). Additionally, molecular markers and morphology show that Agriopodes is not monophyletic: Agriopodes tybo (Barnes) is not closely related to A. fallax nor to Acronicta, and is

UK woodlands, forests, and urban treescapes are under threat from invasive species, exacerbated by climate change, trade, and transport. Invasive tree pests debilitate their host and disrupt forest ecosystems, thus it is imperative to quantitatively model and predict their spread. Addressing this, we model the spread of an invasive pest using a spatiotemporal reaction-diffusion equation, representing the spatial distribution as a population density field. We solve this intractable equation numerically and, from the solution, we determine first arrival times of the pest at locations in the fiel

Understanding how natural populations adapt to complex environmental gradients is crucial for predicting evolutionary responses to global change. The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), a major forest pest expanding northward and upward in Europe, provides an ideal model to explore genomic adaptation along altitudinal and/or latitudinal gradients. We combined pooled and individual whole-genome resequencing of four pairs of low- and high-elevation populations from Spain, Italy and France (mainland and Corsica) to detect signatures of local adaptation. Population structure analyse

The Conogethes punctiferalis, a major pest of peach and other fruit trees, causes significant damage by boring into fruits during its larval stage. Indoxacarb, a sodium channel blocker insecticide, has been widely applied in agriculture and horticulture for pest control, particularly against larval pests. However, its effects on adult insects remain largely unexplored. Present study employed C. punctiferalis as model to investigate the toxic effects of indoxacarb on adult moths. The results showed that sublethal exposure to indoxacarb significantly reduced the release of sex pheromones, reduce
