Motion sickness is preceded by differences in the quantitative kinematics of body sway between individuals who (later) become sick and those who do not. In existing research, this effect has been demonstrated only in measures of body sway, relative to the earth. However, body sway can become coupled with imposed oscillatory motion of the illuminated environment, and the nature of this coupling may differ between individuals who become sick and those who do not. We asked whether body sway would become coupled to complex oscillations of the illuminated environment, and whether individual differe

The motion of a 1D image feature, such as a line, seen through a small aperture, or the small receptive field of a neural motion sensor, is underconstrained, and it is not possible to derive the true motion direction from a single local measurement. This is referred to as the aperture problem. How the visual system solves the aperture problem is a fundamental question in visual motion research. In the estimation of motion vectors through integration of ambiguous local motion measurements at different positions, conventional theories assume that the object motion is a rigid translation, with mo

The normal vestibular system may be adversely affected by environmental challenges which have characteristics that are unfamiliar or ambiguous in the patterns of sensory stimulation they provide. A disordered vestibular system lends susceptibility even to quotidian environmental experiences as the sufferer becomes dependent on potentially misleading, nonvestibular sensory stimuli. In both cases, the sequelae may be vertigo, incoordination, imbalance, and unpleasant autonomic responses. Common environmental motion conditions include visual vertigo, motion sickness, and motorists' disorientation

This study investigated the ankle inversion and inversion velocity between various common motions in sports and simulated sprain motion, in order to provide a threshold for ankle sprain risk identification. The experiment was composed of two parts: firstly, ten male subjects wore a pair of sport shoes and performed ten trials of running, cutting, jump-landing and stepping-down motions. Secondly, five subjects performed five trials of simulated sprain motion by a supination sprain simulator. The motions were analyzed by an eight-camera motion capture system at 120 Hz. A force plate was employed

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study the cortical bases of 3-D structure perception from visual motion in human. Nine subjects underwent three experiments designed to locate the areas involved in (i) motion processing (random motion versus static dots), (ii) coherent motion processing (expansion/ contraction versus random motion) and (iii) 3-D shape from motion reconstruction (3-D surface oscillating in depth versus random motion). Two control experiments tested the specific influence of speed distribution and surface curvature on the activation results. All stimuli consiste

OBJECTIVE: To assess the biomechanical impact of commercially available alternate keyboard designs.DESIGN. A repeated measures study was conducted in a laboratory setting, with planned comparisons of Pitch, Roll and Yaw angles of the keyboards. Ten keyboard conditions were tested. Dependent measures included tendon travel, wrist deviations, and wrist and finger kinematics.BACKGROUND. Various alternate keyboard designs have recently been introduced, which vary Pitch, Roll and Yaw angles, separation distance between keyboard halves, and include other novel features such as cup-shaped depressions

When tested monocularly, strabismic and amblyopic subjects often show asymmetries of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), with OKN being more readily elicited by temporal-to-nasal than by nasal-to-temporal stimulus motion. We tested five visually normal subjects and ten strabismic and/or amblyopic subjects by use of motion-nulling stimuli, which consisted of superimposed temporal-to-nasal and nasal-to-temporal sinusoidal-grating components with a summed contrast of 100%. Both the direction of OKN and the subject's perceived direction of motion (PDM) were tested. Most normal subjects showed symmetrical

A sharp distinction should be made between symptoms of motion-sickness per se and phenomena inferred from the symptomatology, which include rates of acquisition and decay of adaptation effects. Foreknowledge of these "derived phenomena" are valuable if it can be shown that they hold true for virtually any motion environment. Recently, we have developed a sudden-stop vestibulovisual interaction test for measuring susceptibility to motion sickness (1). The test procedure involves four successive assessments that provide not only an index of susceptibility to motion sickness but also the rates of

OBJECTIVES: Artifacts in clinical MRI can compromise the performance of AI models. This study evaluates how different data augmentation strategies affect an AI model's segmentation performance under variable artifact severity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used an AI model based on the nnU-Net architecture to automatically quantify lower limb alignment using axial T2-weighted MR images. Three versions of the AI model were trained with different augmentation strategies: (1) no augmentation ("baseline"), (2) standard nnU-net augmentations ("default"), and (3) "default" plus augmentations that emula

Predicting the time course of motion sickness symptoms enables the evaluation of provocative stimuli and the development of countermeasures for reducing symptom severity. In pursuit of this goal, we present an Observer-driven model of motion sickness for passive motions in the dark. Constructed in two stages, this model predicts motion sickness symptoms by bridging sensory conflict (i.e., differences between actual and expected sensory signals) arising from the Observer model of spatial orientation perception (stage 1) to Oman's model of motion sickness symptom dynamics (stage 2; presented in

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical measurement.
INTRODUCTION: Wrist range of motion (ROM) is considered the universal measurement of success for both surgical and non-surgical treatments. A goniometer can be challenging for an individual to use by themselves, whereas the Dartfish app can analyze and provide immediate feedback to monitor and evaluate patients' kinematic changes during recovery after injury.
PURPOSE OF STUDY: To establish the validity and reliability of the Dartfish app measuring ROM to be used in clinical applications.
METHODS: Twelve healthy participants, (18-25 yrs) , with no previous

Many locomotor tasks involve interactions with moving objects. When observer (i.e., self-)motion is accompanied by object motion, the optic flow field includes a component due to self-motion and a component due to object motion. For moving observers to perceive the movement of other objects relative to the stationary environment, the visual system could recover the object-motion component - that is, it could factor out the influence of self-motion. In principle, this could be achieved using visual self-motion information, non-visual self-motion information, or a combination of both. In this st

INTRODUCTION: Vehicle motion characteristics differ between air, road, and sea environments, both vestibularly and visually. Effects of vision on motion sickness have been studied before, though less systematically in a naval setting. It is hypothesized that appropriate visual information on self-motion is beneficial in a naval setting and that task performance is likely reduced as sickness increases.
METHODS: Using a within-subjects design, 24 subjects were exposed to 30 min of motion in a ship's bridge motion simulator with 3 visual conditions: an Earth-fixed outside view; an inside view th

Colorectal cancer is an important public health problem that is amenable to prevention and early treatment. Traditional screening techniques - fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, barium enema and colonoscopy - each have limitations in terms of diagnostic accuracy, cost and/or patient acceptability. Compliance with recommendations for screening has been poor, in part, because of negative perceptions about the available modalities. Virtual colonoscopy, or computerized tomographic colography, is a minimally invasive technique that safely evaluates the entire colon and does not req

Mutations of three major genes are associated with an increased risk of acute and chronic pancreatitis: the cationic trypsinogen (PRSS1) gene, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene, and the pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) or serine protease inhibitor, Kazal type 1 (SPINK1) gene. Some autosomal dominant forms of hereditary pancreatitis are associated with mutations of the PRSS1 gene, which can be readily identified by genetic testing. Mutations of the CFTR gene can lead either to cystic fibrosis or to idiopathic chronic pancreatitis, and to a variety

Hepatitis C is a prevalent infection in North America. However, the natural history of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the general population is not fully understood. Available cohort-based studies suggest that only a relative minority of patients develop significant liver disease, such as cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. Other studies, mostly conducted based on referral patients with established disease, portray much more serious consequences of HCV infection. Although a substantial improvement has been made in the treatment for HCV, the overall impact of antiviral therapy in a

Effects of various types of motion stimuli were compared to investigate optimum method to elicit motion sickness and adaptation in Suncus murinus (suncus). Three different direction of shaking in the horizontal plane, back and forth, right and left and revolving, induced emetic response to the similar extent. However, vertical shaking was far less effective in inducing motion sickness. Mild and severe horizontal shaking (15 min per day) was continued for 14 days and emetic response to standard motion stimulus was compared before and after the training. The severe daily acceleration strongly de

Automated vehicles could increase the risk of motion sickness because occupants are not involved in driving and do not watch the road. This paper aimed to investigate the influence of motion predictability on motion sickness in automated vehicles, as better motion anticipation is believed to mitigate motion sickness. In a simulator-based study, twenty participants experienced two driving conditions differing only in turn directions. The repetitive condition featured a repeating turn direction pattern. The non-repetitive condition contained pseudo-randomly ordered turn directions. To mimic an '

The effect of local photo-triggered heat release on the motion of organic nanopartcles (NP), a process that is itself thermal, is largely unexplored under low-intensity irradiation. Here, we develop organic NP specifically tailored for this study and demonstrate, comparing three different irradiation intensity regimes, that indeed the NP undergo "acceleration" upon light absorption (Photothermal Motion). These NP have a well-defined chemical composition and extremely high molar absorbance coefficient, and upon excitation, they deactivate mostly non radiatively with localized heat dissipation.
