Motion capture of the upper extremity during activities of daily living in patients with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Investigations using motion capture to analyze limitations in range of motion (ROM) of the upper extremity in adults with cerebral palsy (CP) are scarce. To evaluate the influence of those limitations on activities of daily living (ADL) and to determine potential mechanisms of compensation, we investigated 15 adults with hemiplegic CP using motion capture while they performed 10 defined ADLs. Data from the nonaffected body side and those from an age-matched able-bodied group were also collected and compared with our subjects. We measured motion of the elbow, shoulder, and trunk and found signi

Investigating How Brain Stimulation Mitigates Motion Sickness Using Spatiotemporal Nystagmus Parameters Captured in VR.

Mitigating motion sickness with non-invasive cortical vestibular brain stimulation (vBS) is promising because it does not require redesigning VR content or altering the motion profile of a moving platform. Instead, it aims to enhance individuals' intrinsic resistance to motion sickness. However, the mechanism underlying its online efficacy remains unclear (Here, "online efficacy" means the observed motion sickness reduction during vBS not before or after vBS). Motivated by lower motion sickness susceptibility observed in congenital nystagmus patients, we hypothesized that reductions in motion

Effects of arousal and valence on standing kinematics and kinetics in young men: An approach using a motion capture system.

The emotional impact on body kinematics and kinetics during quiet standing was investigated using a motion capture system. Twenty-two participants stood on a force plate while viewing affective pictures for 72 s. The task was repeated six times under different picture conditions categorized by arousal (High and Low) and valence (Unpleasant, Neutral, and Pleasant). We analyzed variabilities of the center of mass, lower-limb joint angles (ankle, knee, and hip), and joint torques. Additionally, breathing parameters, including tidal volume, breathing rate, and minute ventilation, were estimated ba

AI-smartphone markerless motion capturing of hip, knee, and ankle joint kinematics during countermovement jumps.

Recently, AI-driven skeleton reconstruction tools that use multistage computer vision pipelines were designed to estimate 3D kinematics from 2D video sequences. In the present study, we validated a novel markerless, smartphone video-based artificial intelligence (AI) motion capture system for hip, knee, and ankle angles during countermovement jumps (CMJs). Eleven participants performed six CMJs. We used 2D videos created by a smartphone (Apple iPhone X, 4K, 60 fps) to create 24 different keypoints, which together built a full skeleton including joints and their connections. Body parts and skel

Validation, characterization, and utility of markerless motion capture in a large cohort of pediatric patients with complex gait patterns.

Markerless motion capture has emerged as a potential substitute for traditional marker-based systems, offering scalable, non-invasive acquisition of human movement. Despite increasing adoption in research and sports applications, its clinical utility for children with atypical gait remains an open question. To address this gap, simultaneous marker-based and markerless data were collected in 202 children with complex gait patterns (12.1 ± 3.9 years). Marker-based kinematics were processed using the Shriners Children's Gait Model (SCGM), while markerless outputs were computed using Theia3D with

The accuracy, validity and reliability of Theia3D markerless motion capture for studying the biomechanics of human movement: A systematic review.

Recent advancements in computer vision recognition combined with the use of pose estimation algorithms has led to a rapid increase in the use of 3D video-based markerless (ML) motion capture to study human movement. One such prominent system is Theia3D. To determine the accuracy, validity, and reliability of Theia3D, a systematic literature review was conducted across five electronic databases using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. Studies were included if they investigated the accuracy, validity, or reliability of Theia3D against a sta

Effects of Exoskeletons on Error Between Marker and Markerless Motion Capture in Children With Crouch Gait: A Pilot Study.

This study evaluated if a lower-extremity exoskeleton affects error between marker-based ($M^{+}$) and markerless ($\mathbf{M}^{\boldsymbol{-}}$) motion capture in children with crouch gait. Two participants (P1: female, P2: male, ages 6 and 11 years old, cerebral palsy and spina bifida, both with assistive devices) walked with (Exo) and without (NoExo) an exoskeleton spanning the knee and ankle. Mean absolute difference (MAD) between $\mathrm{M}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{M}^{-}$ of gait cycle normalized hip, knee, and ankle angles were analyzed. Key outcomes of an ongoing clinical trial including mea

Assessment of the Accuracy of a Deep Learning Algorithm- and Video-based Motion Capture System in Estimating Snatch Kinematics.

In weightlifting, quantitative kinematic analysis is essential for evaluating snatch performance. While marker-based (MB) approaches are commonly used, they are impractical for training or competitions. Markerless video-based (VB) systems utilizing deep learning-based pose estimation algorithms could address this issue. This study assessed the comparability and applicability of VB systems in obtaining snatch kinematics by comparing the outcomes to an MB reference system. 21 weightlifters (15 Male, 6 Female) performed 2-3 snatches at 65%, 75%, and 80% of their one-repetition maximum. The clinical application of three-dimensional motion capture (4D): a novel approach to quantify the dynamics of facial animations.

The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of measuring the change in magnitude, speed, and motion similarity of facial animations in head and neck oncology patients, before and after lip split mandibulotomy. Seven subjects (four males, three females) aged 42-80 years were recruited. The subjects were asked to perform four facial animations (maximal smile, lip purse, cheek puff, and grimace) from rest to maximal position. The animations were captured using a Di4D motion capture system, which recorded 60 frames/s. Nine facial soft tissue landmarks were manually digitized on the

Inverse Dynamics Meets Markerless Motion Capture during Standing: Concurrent Validation of Center of Mass and Center of Pressure Estimations.

INTRODUCTION: Observational balance assessment is frequently used clinically but remains subjective and limited in accuracy. Although laboratory-based methods provide precise biomechanical measurements, their need for specialized equipment and expertise limits clinical use. This study presents a multi-view, open-source markerless motion capture system (MMCS) using OpenPose to identify body landmarks, enabling objective balance assessment via center-of-mass (COM) and inverse-dynamics-based center-of-pressure (COP) estimation. METHODS: The proposed MMCS was experimentally validated. Twelve non-

Inter-examiner and inter-day reliability of dynamic tibiofemoral movements measurement using motion capture during walking and jumping tasks.

BACKGROUND: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) primarily restricts dynamic anterior tibia translation (ATTd) and internal tibia rotation (ITRd). Measuring these movements dynamically is essential for evaluating injury risk factors and their potential consequences. This study aimed to assess the inter-examiner and inter-day reliability of measuring ATTd and ITRd during walking and jumping tasks using optoelectronic motion capture. METHODS: Nineteen healthy participants performed walking, side hop, single-leg hop for distance, and triple hop for distance. To assess inter-examiner reliability,

Dual-Model Artificial Intelligence Framework Integrating AI-Based Markerless Motion Capture for Dynamic Gait Prediction and Health-Status Classification.

Background/Objectives: Human gait analysis is essential for identifying biomechanical alterations associated with pathological conditions. However, conventional laboratory systems that combine optical motion capture and force plates remain costly, space-demanding, and difficult to implement in routine or accessible settings. This study proposes a dual-model artificial intelligence framework designed to bridge kinematics and dynamics and subsequently support gait health-status classification from motion data. Methods: The first model was developed to estimate ground reaction forces (GRF) and ce

A Proof-of-Concept Framework for Upper-Limb Segment Definition and Joint Angle Computation Using Marker-Based Motion Capture.

Marker-based motion capture systems are widely used to estimate joint kinematics, yet their accuracy depends strongly on how anatomical segments and coordinate systems are defined. This proof-of-concept study aimed to describe and technically evaluate a structured and reproducible framework for upper-limb segment definition and joint-angle computation. Reflective markers were placed on anatomical landmarks of the trunk and upper limbs, and joint angles were computed using custom-developed MATLAB R2022b (MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA) routines. Baseline-corrected model-derived joint angles were co

A validation study demonstrating portable motion capture cameras accurately characterize gait metrics when compared to a pressure-sensitive walkway.

Digital quantification of gait can be used to measure aging- and disease-related decline in mobility. Gait performance also predicts prognosis, disease progression, and response to therapies. Most gait analysis systems require large amounts of space, resources, and expertise to implement and are not widely accessible. Thus, there is a need for a portable system that accurately characterizes gait. Here, depth video from two portable cameras accurately reconstructed gait metrics comparable to those reported by a pressure-sensitive walkway. 392 research participants walked across a four-meter pre
