Directional defects in pursuit and motion perception in humans with unilateral cerebral lesions.

We tested motion perception and smooth pursuit in 26 patients with unilateral cerebral hemispheric lesions. We used random dot cinematograms to test motion direction discrimination. We measured pursuit gain as they followed a predictable sinusoidal target moving horizontally at three different frequencies, and an unpredictable horizontal step-ramp target in the ipsilateral hemi-field. Six patients had defects in motion perception when the targets were moving towards the side of the lesions ('ipsi-directional' defects) and two had bi-directional defects. Motion perception defects occurred with

Abnormal activation patterns in MT+ during visual motion perception in major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found that patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) exhibit impaired visual motion perception capabilities, and multi-level abnormalities in the human middle temporal complex (MT+), a key brain area for processing visual motion information. However, the brain activity pattern of MDD patients during the perception of visual motion information is currently unclear. In order to study the effect of depression on the activity and functional connectivity (FC) of MT+ during the perception of visual motion information, we conducted a study combining task-state fMR

Heightened perception of illusory motion is associated with symptom severity in schizophrenia patients.

Abnormal perceptual processing in schizophrenia may contribute to the development of positive symptoms such as hallucinations. Experimental findings suggest that such abnormalities result from impaired processing of local signals into complex cortical representations. Because complex processing is needed to generate the perception of illusory motion from local signals, deteriorated perception of illusory motion would be expected in schizophrenia. However, findings are mixed, and the relationship between complex motion processing and symptoms is unclear. Illusions with multiple flow components

No evidence for after-effects of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation on motion perception.

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) delivered at imperceptible intensities can improve vestibular function in health and disease. Here we evaluated whether nGVS effects on vestibular function are only present during active stimulation or may exhibit relevant post-stimulation after-effects. Initially, nGVS amplitudes that optimally improve posture were determined in 13 healthy subjects. Subsequently, effects of optimal nGVS amplitudes on vestibular roll-tilt direction recognition thresholds (DRT) were examined during active and sham nGVS. Ten of 13 subjects exhibited reduced DRTs durin

Neuronal correlates of motion-defined shape perception in primate dorsal and ventral streams.

Human and non-human primates can readily perceive the shape of objects using visual motion. Classically, shape, and motion are considered to be separately processed via ventral and dorsal cortical pathways, respectively. However, many lines of anatomical and physiological evidence have indicated that these two pathways are likely to be interconnected at some stage. For motion-defined shape perception, these two pathways should interact with each other because the ventral pathway must utilize motion, which the dorsal pathway processes, to extract shape signal. However, it is unknown how interac

Global motion perception is associated with motor function in 2-year-old children.

The dorsal visual processing stream that includes V1, motion sensitive area V5 and the posterior parietal lobe, supports visually guided motor function. Two recent studies have reported associations between global motion perception, a behavioural measure of processing in V5, and motor function in pre-school and school aged children. This indicates a relationship between visual and motor development and also supports the use of global motion perception to assess overall dorsal stream function in studies of human neurodevelopment. We investigated whether associations between vision and motor fun

Effect of Core Temperature and Embolic Load During Cardiac Surgery on Motion Perception.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline post-cardiac surgery is of clinical concern. To better understand it a sensitive and specific measure of post-surgery brain impairment is required. The cerebral territory most likely to be adversely affected by surgery is the posterior "watershed" territory. METHODS: We have designed a psychophysical task involving reading letters defined by motion aimed at measuring the integrity of a cortical area (MT) located in this territory. Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and a healthy control group were given the psychophysical test twice, pre-

The bicycle illusion: sidewalk science informs the integration of motion and shape perception.

The authors describe a new visual illusion first discovered in a natural setting. A cyclist riding beside a pair of sagging chains that connect fence posts appears to move up and down with the chains. In this illusion, a static shape (the chains) affects the perception of a moving shape (the bicycle), and this influence involves assimilation (averaging) rather than opposition (differentiation). These features distinguish the illusion from illusions of motion capture and induced motion. The authors take this bicycle illusion into the laboratory and report 4 findings: Naïve viewers experience th

Object motion perception is shaped by the motor control mechanism of ocular pursuit.

It is still a matter of debate whether the control of smooth pursuit eye movements involves an internal drive signal from object motion perception. We measured human target velocity and target position perceptions and compared them with the presumed pursuit control mechanism (model simulations). We presented normal subjects (Ns) and vestibular loss patients (Ps) with visual target motion in space. Concurrently, a visual background was presented, which was kept stationary or was moved with or against the target (five combinations). The motion stimuli consisted of smoothed ramp displacements wit

Motion perception of short-wavelength sensitive cones in glaucoma using random dots moving.

PURPOSE: To determine whether motion perception of short-wavelength sensitive(SWS) cones is capable of predicting primary open angle glaucoma(POAG) optic neuropathy. METHODS: Motion perceptions of SWS cones were isolated by Blue random dot stimulus displayed on the Yellow background, then the detecting displacement threshold of motion perception from SWS cone in POAG was measured, and compared with the age-matched normal group. RESULTS: The detecting displacement thresholds of motion perception from SWS cones in 8 sites of 15 degrees were all elevated in POAG compared with the normal group.

Dorsal and ventral stream contributions to form-from-motion perception in a patient with form-from motion deficit: a case report.

The main model of visual processing in primates proposes an anatomo-functional distinction between the dorsal stream, specialized in spatio-temporal information, and the ventral stream, processing essentially form information. However, these two pathways also communicate to share much visual information. These dorso-ventral interactions have been studied using form-from-motion (FfM) stimuli, revealing that FfM perception first activates dorsal regions (e.g., MT+/V5), followed by successive activations of ventral regions (e.g., LOC). However, relatively little is known about the implications of

Global motion perception is independent from contrast sensitivity for coherent motion direction discrimination and visual acuity in 4.5-year-old children.

Global motion processing depends on a network of brain regions that includes extrastriate area V5 in the dorsal visual stream. For this reason, psychophysical measures of global motion perception have been used to provide a behavioral measure of dorsal stream function. This approach assumes that global motion is relatively independent of visual functions that arise earlier in the visual processing hierarchy such as contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. We tested this assumption by assessing the relationships between global motion perception, contrast sensitivity for coherent motion direction

The role of vision in sensory integration models for predicting motion perception and sickness.

Users of automated vehicles will engage in other activities and take their eyes off the road, making them prone to motion sickness. To resolve this, the current paper validates models predicting sickness in response to motion and visual conditions. We validate published models of vestibular and visual sensory integration that have been used for predicting motion sickness through sensory conflict. We use naturalistic driving data and laboratory motion (and vection) paradigms, such as sinusoidal translation and rotation at different frequencies, Earth-Vertical Axis Rotation, Off-Vertical Axis Ro

Preserved motion perception and the density of cortical projections to V5 in homonymous hemianopia.

Following a unilateral post-chiasmal lesion of the geniculo-striate pathway, patients develop homonymous visual field defects. Using classical perimetry, patients with 'complete' homonymous hemianopia are unaware of stimuli in the affected hemifield. However, some show preserved vision in the affected hemifield in which the conscious perception of moving stimuli is preserved (Riddoch phenomenon). Prior evidence suggests that preservation of a direct pathway from the lateral geniculate nucleus to visual area 5 (bypassing the primary visual cortex) may be the basis of this type of residual visio

The effect of target speed on perception of visual motion direction in a patient with akinetopsia.

Although much research has been devoted to the neural correlates of motion perception, the processing of speed of motion is still a topic of discussion. Apart from patient LM, no in-depth clinical research has been done in the past 20 years on this topic. In the present study, we investigated patient TD, who suffered from the rare disorder akinetopsia due to bilateral lesions of V5 after stroke. By means of a Random-Dot-Kinematogram (RDK) in which speed was varied systematically, it was found that TD was impaired in perceiving the direction of movement at speeds exceeding 9 deg/s. Our study su

V3A processes contour curvature as a trackable feature for the perception of rotational motion.

Contour curvature (CC) is a vital cue for the analysis of both form and motion. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we localized the neural correlates of CC for the processing and perception of rotational motion. We found that the blood oxygen level-dependent signal in retinotopic area V3A and possibly also lateral occipital cortex (LOC) varied parametrically with the degree of CC. Control experiments ruled out the possibility that these modulations resulted from either changes in the area of the stimuli, the velocity with which contour elements were actually translating, or perceived

Hemispheric integration and differences in perception of a line-motion illusion in the divided brain.

Five people lacking the corpus callosum (two callosotomized, three with agenesis of the corpus callosum) and neurologically normal subjects were shown vertical lines that appeared instantaneously between pairs of rectangles in one or other visual field. When one of the rectangles flashed prior to the presentation of the line, and the line was in the same visual field, all subjects perceived the line as spreading from the flashed rectangle to the other. Normal subjects and one of the callosotomized subjects showed a slight but significant right visual-field advantage, perhaps reflecting a left-

Ventral aspect of the visual form pathway is not critical for the perception of biological motion.

Identifying the movements of those around us is fundamental for many daily activities, such as recognizing actions, detecting predators, and interacting with others socially. A key question concerns the neurobiological substrates underlying biological motion perception. Although the ventral "form" visual cortex is standardly activated by biologically moving stimuli, whether these activations are functionally critical for biological motion perception or are epiphenomenal remains unknown. To address this question, we examined whether focal damage to regions of the ventral visual cortex, resultin

High-level, but not low-level, motion perception is impaired in patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Smooth pursuit eye movements are compromised in patients with schizophrenia and their first-degree relatives. Although research has demonstrated that the motor components of smooth pursuit eye movements are intact, motion perception has been shown to be impaired. In particular, studies have consistently revealed deficits in performance on tasks specific to the high-order motion area V5 (middle temporal area, MT) in patients with schizophrenia. In contrast, data from low-level motion detectors in the primary visual cortex (V1) have been inconsistent. METHOD: To differentiate between
