We present two own cases of the aglossy-adactyly syndrome and a review of 25 cases of the literature. Our experience concernes two girls. One was followed from birth until 4 1/2 years, the other from 5 to 9 years. This helped us to obtain a good knowledge of the development of these patients. Malformations of the mouth and of the limbs with a normal intelligence characterize the aglossy-adactyly syndrome. The most important features are: shortness of the tongue of variable degree, anomaly of the teeth, hypoplasia of the mandible and ectromelia of different extension with a peripheric predilect

INTRODUCTION: Congenital maxillomandibular syngnathia, or fusion of the jaws, is a rare condition that has a broad spectrum of presentations. The restricted mouth opening can lead to issues with feeding, swallowing, and respiration resulting in failure to thrive and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Early recognition and treatment is necessary for proper growth and development.
CASE REPORT: We report a 1-day-old male with isolated bilateral soft tissue alveolar fibrous bands. He presented with difficulty feeding secondary to trismus. No bony or muscular involvement in the synechiae was noted

Hypoglossia is a rare congenital anomaly and is frequently associated with limb anomalies. In 1971, Hall employed the term hypoglossia-hypodactylia syndrome for the classification of these oromandibular-limb hypogenesis syndromes. The syndrome is characterized by hypoglossia, micrognathia mandible and variable degrees of limb abnormalities, frequent gingival abnormalities, and an absence of mandibular incisors. We describe an unusual case of hypoglossia-hypodactylia syndrome. The newborn had hypoglossia, limb defects and complex congenital cardiopathy, which has to date never been reported to

This report is concerned with the manifestations associated with focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome) in two patients. Goltz syndrome is a rare polydysplastic syndrome. Systemic findings were similar to those previously reported in the literature and are illustrated. More detailed descriptions of the dental abnormalities are presented. The possibility of root resorption being a previously unreported part of the syndrome is hypothesised.

We reported on a Japanese boy similar to the patients previously reported by Malpuech et al. (1983) with mental and growth retardation, hypertelorism, bilateral cleft lips, cleft palate, and urogenital anomalies. He also had undescribed cardiac defects. This is probably the second case report of Malpuech facial clefting syndrome.

A fetus with a severe variant of the agnathia malformation complex (AMC) was delivered following prenatal diagnostic evaluation with ultrasonography. The constellation of anomalies that accompanied the agnathia included holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, situs inversus, and polysplenia. Recently, several authors have reported the association between the agnathia, holoprosencephaly, and situs inversus. We present evidence which suggests that, when hydranencephaly is also present, this may represent the most severe variant of the AMC. Our case is presented, the literature is reviewed, and a hyp

Like many other body structures, the mouth is often affected by disease that principally arises from, or targets, several tissue sites. Indeed, systemic disorders can manifest on the oral mucosa as the first, only, or become the most severe manifestation of a systemic disease and/or become the most significant factor to adversely affect an individual's quality of life. Oral healthcare providers (dentists, therapists and hygienists) may be the first to observe an abnormality in the mouth which sometimes indicates a significant systemic disease unknown to the patient or their general medical pra

BACKGROUND: Monosomy 21 is a rare chromosomal abnormality. It is mainly associated with mental retardation, intellectual disability, growth retardation, microcephaly, and characteristic facial features. General anesthesia in adults with this disease has not been reported. We report difficult airway management of an adult patient with monosomy 21.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old female was scheduled for laparoscopic gynecological surgery. She was diagnosed with monosomy 21 at birth and accompanied with mental retardation. Preoperative examination revealed limited mouth opening with Mallampati

The epidemiologic data on oral lesions in native Indians remain unknown in many countries around the world. This paper reports the prevalence and distribution of oral congenital anomalies and pathologic lesions found in a survey of 107 schoolchildren (ages 12 to 17), from two isolated communities in the ethnographic Mazahua area in the State of Mexico. The main entities identified were: pigmented lesions (47.6%), lingual anomalies (17.4%) and developmental tooth alterations (6.9%). The remaining 24.4% of the lesions were gingival inflammatory hyperplasia, partial ankilosis of the tongue, liche

Clinical picture of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is described by the example of three girls aged 9, 11 and 11 years. Besides mild to moderate mental retardation, all the three girls had a number of physical anomalies characteristic of FAS. Inheritance as the possible cause of these defects was ruled out by genetic testing. Low birth weight, delay in the postnatal growth and development, microcephaly, hypertelorism, malformed and low-positioned auricles, as well as skeletal alterations, were observed in the three girls. In two of them, epicanthus, strabismus, microphtalmia, gothic palate, c

BACKGROUND: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a method of assisted reproductive technology that involves the selection of a single sperm cell and the manual injection of this cell into the egg. The lack of relevant experimental studies, the nature of the technology involving non-natural selection of the fertilizing sperm, and possible damage to the egg have caused concern that ICSI could increase the risk of birth defects. Data from available cohort studies comparing ICSI with standard in vitro fertilization (IVF) should be combined to evaluate the risks involved with ICSI.

Elongation or hyperplasia of coronoid process of mandible is rare condition characterized by abnormal bone development which cause malocclusion and the limited mouth opening. In this study, in an Anatolian skull, a case of bilateral elongation of mandibular coronoid process was presented. Levandoski panographic analysis was performed on the panoramic radiographie to determine the hyperplasia of the coronoid process. The right condylar process was exactly hyperplastic. The measurements of Kr-Go/Cd-Go were 95.10 mm/79.03 mm on right side and 97.53 mm/87.80 mm on left side. The ratio of Kr-Go/Cd-

Microstomia is defined as an abnormal small oral orifice. Burns and injuries of perioral tissues, perioral surgeries, and genetic disorders can lead to perioral scar formations and restrict mouth opening. Treatment of microstomia requires surgical or conservative approaches. The aim of this report is to assess the effects of surgical commissuroplasty techniques combined with the application of semidynamic mouth splints on 4 microstomia patients with different etiologies. The combination of surgical and conservative techniques proves to be the best method of treating compromised perioral tissue

Deep nasal breathing [with the mouth closed] activates [to a certain extent selectively], in the human EEG, epileptic abnormalities of diencephalotemporal origin [Servít et al. 1977]. This activating effect could be suppressed by local anaesthesia of the mucosa membrane in the superior nasal meatus. The same abnormalities could be elicited or activated by air insufflation into the upper nasal cavity, without pulmonary hyperventilation. These results speak in favour of the assumption that a neural [reflex] mechanism of the activating effect of nasal hyperventilation is involved, with a reflexog

This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics according to Tessier classification and evaluate the surgical outcomes in patients with rare craniofacial cleft (RCC) primary repair. A retrospective study on 30 patients with RCC was conducted at the Department of Craniofacial and Plastic Surgery of the Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics. Rare craniofacial cleft was recorded according to Tessier's classification and was analyzed for gender, affected side, clinical characteristics, and associated abnormalities. Primary surgical correction was based on the concept of aesthetic un

Huntington's disease (HD) causes severe motor impairments that are characterized by chorea, dystonia, and impaired fine motor control. The motor deficits include deficits in the control of the forelimb, but as yet there has been no comprehensive assessment of the impairments in arm, hand and digit movements as they are used in every-day tasks. The present study investigated the reaching of twelve HD subjects and twelve age-matched control subjects on a reach-to-eat task. The subjects were asked to reach for a small food item, with the left or the right hand, and then bring it to the mouth for
