Chemical agents to control biofilm formation in step 1 of care-Toothpastes and mouthwashes/concepts and challenges.

Maintaining optimal oral hygiene is important for overall oral care, ensuring the well-being of teeth and their surrounding tissues. In addition, it promotes fresh breath and a pleasing smile. A key element of oral self-care is the daily use of toothpaste during regular brushing. This plays an important role in preventing tooth decay and addressing broader oral health concerns like periodontal diseases. Toothpaste ingredients offer significant benefits to oral health, particularly stannous fluoride, which contributes to the efficacy of toothpaste formulations by demonstrating notable anticario

Mouthwashes for the control of supragingival biofilm and gingivitis in orthodontic patients: evidence-based recommendations for clinicians.

Properly performed daily mechanical biofilm control is the most important prevention strategy for periodontal diseases. However, proper mechanical biofilm control is not performed effectively by the majority of the population, mainly due to lack of motivation and of manual dexterity. Local biofilm retention factors may aggravate home oral hygiene quality. For this reason, patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances comprise a group that may benefit from the daily use of mouthwashes. The purpose of this review was to perform a systematic search in the literature on antiseptics used to control

Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride and chlorhexidine mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage dental implants: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The growing popularity of non-submerged dental implants in recent years requires a greater emphasis on microbial plaque control. Chlorhexidine (CHX), the most commonly used mouthwash in implant surgery, is sometimes associated with tooth staining and alteration in taste perception. Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride (AmF/SnF2) mouthwash has been shown to have anti-infective properties; however, it has not been tested as an adjunct anti-infective means in non-submerged dental implants. The purpose of this trial was to compare AmF/SnF2 and CHX mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage de

Influence of additional active ingredients on the effectiveness of non-alcoholic chlorhexidine mouthwashes: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic chlorhexidine mouthwashes are equally effective and have fewer potential risks than hydroalcoholic solutions. Nowadays, other active ingredients are added to these mouthwashes in an attempt to improve their effectiveness and reduce side effects. Following an experimental gingivitis model, this study examined three non-alcoholic commercial mouthwashes having 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) in common. METHODS: Using a double masked, cross-over design, 30 subjects underwent three consecutive experimental phases with three mouthwashes: CHX, CHX + 0.05% sodium fluor

Determination of physicochemical, cytotoxic, and whitening properties of plasma-activated liquids for their potential use as mouthwashes.

Multiple drug resistance (MDR) among antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a major challenge in modern medicine, prompting interest in alternative antimicrobials like mouthwashes and toothpastes. Plasma-activated liquids (PALs), produced by exposing liquids to cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), are enriched with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) that may have antimicrobial properties. However, their biocompatibility with mammalian cells remains underexplored. In this study, three formulations were subjected to CAP: (L1) zinc sulfate and calcium chloride, (L2) xylitol and sodium fluoride, a

Human oral retention of zinc from mouthwashes containing zinc salts and its relevance to dental plaque control.

Subjects using 30 mM zinc phenolsulphonate as a mouthwash retained 12 per cent of the zinc. Salivary zinc concentration was increased by using mouthwashes containing 17-35 mM zinc as the sulphate, phenolsulphonate or citrate. For 17 mM zinc sulphate or phenolsulphonate, the effect lasted 3-4 h. Zinc retained in the mouth gave visible fluorescence after rinsing with 8-hydroxyquinoline and was particularly evident on the tongue, cheek mucosa and dental plaque. The concentration of zinc in plaque was increased 13-19-fold 1 h after using 31 or 18 mM zinc phenolsulphonate. A 3-fold increase was sti
