Area-Level Normative Social Context and Intimate Partner Physical Violence in Mozambique.

Violence against women is considered a serious public health problem. It is estimated that about 30% of women who have been in a relationship in the world have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence from their intimate partners. In sub-Saharan Africa, one of the regions in the world with the highest prevalence of intimate partner violence, there have been studies of factors associated with intimate partner violence. However, few studies have explicitly examined the influence of the normative social context on women's accepting attitudes toward spousal abuse and their risk of expe

Rift Valley fever: a sero-epidemiological survey among pregnant women in Mozambique.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) causes abortion in sheep and cattle. However, the teratogenic and abortogenic potential of RVF in humans is not known. Sera from a total of 1163 pregnant women in Mozambique were tested for RVF virus antibodies by ELISA and 28 (2%) were found to be positive. Mothers experiencing fetal death or miscarriage (155) had the same RVF virus antibody prevalence as those with normal deliveries. Analysis of maternity histories showed some indication of increased fetal wastage among women positive for RVF virus antibody. The ELISA used in this study was compared with a plaque redu

Joint modelling of left- and interval-censored viral load for couples in Mozambique.

Mathematical and statistical models have been essential tools in exploring the dynamics of viral load measures, understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection and in assessment of the potency of antiretroviral therapies. However, this can be challenging due to the potential intra-couple correlation as well as the presence of multiple measurements collected from the same study site or cluster. A second complication arises due to censoring of the individual viral load measurements. The aim of this paper is to investigate the association between age and viral load of woman and man within a

Household structure is independently associated with malaria risk in rural Sussundenga, Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Mozambique has the fourth highest malaria cases and malaria mortality globally. Locally, malaria incidence increases from low in the southern region to high in the central and northern regions. Manica Province in central Mozambique has the fourth highest prevalence of malaria out of the 11 provinces, and the highest in the central region of the country. In this area where coverage of interventions has been limited, household level risk factors can be important for understanding the natural history of infection, as well as the implementation of current and future interventions. From a Chicken Model to a Patient: Microsurgical Repair of a Brachial Artery in Mozambique.

In sub-Saharan Africa, options for reconstruction of traumatic injuries are limited due to lack of access to microsurgery-trained surgeons. Recently, the Plastic Surgery Foundation-sponsored Surgeons in Humanitarian Alliance for Reconstruction, Research and Education group hosted a virtual microsurgery skills course for junior plastic surgeons in this region. In this report, we describe a case of complete brachial artery transection requiring microsurgical techniques and use of vein graft for repair at our provincial hospital in Mozambique. By highlighting this case, we aimed to describe a dir

Mental health and ART adherence among adolescents living with HIV in Mozambique.

Little is known about the mental health needs of adolescents living with HIV (ALWH) in Mozambique, including the potential relationship between mental health challenges and poor antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence. We examined mental health problems (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD] symptoms and impairment) and their association with self-reported ART adherence among ALWH ages 15-19 in Nampula, Mozambique. The associations between each mental health problem area and sub-optimal adherence were estimated using logistic regression, controlling for age, education, an

Quality of malaria data in public health facilities in three provinces of Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Malaria data reported through Mozambique's routine health information system are used to guide the implementation of prevention and control activities. Although previous studies have identified issues with the quality of aggregated data reported from public health facilities in the country, no studies have evaluated the quality of routine indicators recorded in health facility registries. This study addresses this issue by comparing indicators calculated from data from exit interviews and re-examinations of patients with data based on registry records from health facilities in orde

The Political Economy of Tobacco in Mozambique and Zimbabwe: A Triangulation Mixed Methods Protocol.

Changing global markets have generated a dramatic shift in tobacco consumption from high-income countries (HICs) to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); by 2030, more than 80% of the disease burden from tobacco use will fall on LMICs. Propelling this shift, opponents of tobacco control have successfully asserted that tobacco is essential to the economic livelihoods of smallholder tobacco farmers and the economy of tobacco-growing countries. This nexus of economic, agricultural and public health policymaking is one of the greatest challenges facing tobacco control efforts, especially in LM

The Epidemiology of Trachoma in Mozambique: Results of 96 Population-Based Prevalence Surveys.

PURPOSE: Surveys are needed to guide trachoma control efforts in Mozambique, with WHO guidelines for intervention based on the prevalence of trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) in children aged 1-9 years and the prevalence of trichiasis in adults aged 15 years and above. We conducted surveys to complete the map of trachoma prevalence in Mozambique. METHODS: Between July 2012 and May 2015, we carried out cross-sectional surveys in 96 evaluation units (EUs) covering 137 districts. RESULTS: A total of 269,217 individuals were enumerated and 249,318 people were examined using the WHO simpl

Community-acquired bacteremia among children admitted to a rural hospital in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Although community-acquired bacteremia is an important cause of childhood mortality in Africa, recognition of disease burden and potential impact of bacterial vaccines is limited. METHODS: Blood cultures for bacterial pathogens were conducted systematically among children <15 years of age admitted to Manhiça District Hospital, from 2001 to 2006. RESULTS: Blood-stream infections were identified in 8% (1550/19,896) of pediatric hospital admissions. Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) and Pneumococcus were the most prevalent pathogens isolated (26% and 25% of 1550 cases, respectively). Un

Vaginal practices: eroticism and implications for women's health and condom use in Mozambique.

This paper analyses two female sexual practices in Tete Province, Mozambique: (1) the practice of elongating the labia minora and (2) what is sometimes called 'dry sex' involving the insertion of natural and/or synthetic products into the vagina or the ingestion of these products orally. These practices are fundamental to the construction of female identity, eroticism and the experience of pleasure. Notions such as 'closed/open', 'dry/damp', 'hot/cold', 'heavy/light', 'life/death', 'wealth/poverty' and 'sweet/not sweet' are central to local understandings of sexual practices and reproduction.

Trichinella zimbabwensis in wild reptiles of Zimbabwe and Mozambique and farmed reptiles of Ethiopia.

In 1995, a new species of Trichinella (Trichinella zimbabwensis) was discovered in farmed Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) in Zimbabwe, where the mode of transmission was the consumption of the meat of slaughtered crocodiles, used as feed. To determine whether T. zimbabwensis affects poikilotherm vertebrates in the wild, monitor lizards (Varanus niloticus) and Nile crocodiles were collected in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. In 5 (17.6%) of the 28 monitor lizards from Zimbabwe, T. zimbabwensis larvae were identified. For the wild Nile crocodiles from Mozambique, species-level identification was

Cyanogenic potential of cassava flour: field trial in Mozambique of a simple kit.

The cyanogenic potential (ppm HCN equivalents) of 80 samples of cassava flour (obtained from the Mujocojo and Terrene-A areas of Nampula Province and the markets of Nampula City in Mozambique) were determined using a new simple kit, based on the use of picric acid paper (Egan et al., 1997). The kit is compact, requires only a small amount of water and is very simple to use in the field. Comparison with the results of a semi-quantitative method shows a mean deviation between the two methods of 20% (SD 12%). All samples fitted a single population distribution with a mean value of 45 ppm HCN equi
