The purpose of this review is to give an up-to-date, thorough, and timely overview of monkeypox (Mpox), a severe infectious viral disease. Furthermore, this review provides an up-to-date treatment option for Mpox. The monkeypox virus (MPXV) has remained the most virulent poxvirus for humans since the elimination of smallpox approximately 41 years ago, with distribution mainly in central and west Africa. Mpox in humans is a zoonotically transferred disease that results in symptoms like those of smallpox. It had spread throughout west and central Africa when it was first diagnosed in the Republi

Mpox (monkeypox) infection cases increased recently in non-Mpox outbreak areas, potentially causing an international threat. The desire to defend against a potential outbreak has led to renewed efforts to develop Mpox vaccines. In this report, mice were immunized with various doses of modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) to evaluate the cross-reactive immune response of MVA immunization against protective antigens of the current monkeypox virus. We demonstrated that MVA induced specific antibodies against protective antigens (A29, A35, B6, M1, H3, and I1), mediating the neutralization abilitie

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox virus clade I is endemic in several central African countries and characterised by an increase in disease severity and mortality. Since October, 2023, a large-scale mpox outbreak has emerged in DR Congo, and in March, 2024, the first individuals with mpox were reported outside the endemic areas in Republic of the Congo. We aimed to provide insight into the epidemic by sequencing samples obtained from individuals with mpox in Republic of the Congo.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional, descriptive study, samples were collected from individuals with suspected mpox between Jan

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a zoonotic disease caused by the Orthopoxvirus monkeypox virus (MPXV). Since 1970, outbreaks of MPXV have occurred in several Sub-Saharan African countries. However, from May 2022 to April 2023, recent outbreaks of Mpox occurred in several countries outside of Africa, and these cases quickly spread to over 100 non-endemic countries on all continents. Most of these cases were found in the region of the Americas and the Europe region. In Latin America, the highest all-age Mpox rates per million inhabitants were in Peru, Colombia, Chile, and Brazil. Given its global impact, Mp

The effectiveness of 1 dose of JYNNEOS vaccine (modified vaccinia Ankara vaccine, Bavarian Nordic) against hospitalization for mpox (caused by Monkeypox virus), has been demonstrated; however, the impact of 2 doses on hospitalization risk, especially among persons infected with HIV, who are at higher risk for severe disease, is an important factor in evaluating vaccine effectiveness against mpox disease severity and Monkeypox virus infection. Surveillance data collected by the California Department of Public Health were used to evaluate whether receipt of 2 doses of JYNNEOS vaccine reduced the

In 1970, the first case of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was documented in an infant in Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).1 Infections with clade I monkeypox virus (MPXV) are endemic in the rainforest regions of central Africa and result from both zoonotic and human-to-human transmission. The cessation of smallpox vaccination in 1980 because of the eradication of smallpox has led to an increase in the number of individuals who are orthopox immune naïve and is felt to be responsible for a recent increase in mpox cases in the DRC. Comparisons of active surveillance in Sa

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a zoonotic viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus. The recent occurrence of Mpox infections has become a significant global issue in recent months. Despite being an old disease with a low mortality rate, the ongoing multicountry outbreak is atypical due to its occurrence in nonendemic countries. The current review encompasses a comprehensive analysis of the literature pertaining to MPXV, with the aim of consolidating the existing data on the virus's epidemiological, biological, and clinical characteristics, as well as vaccina

After the global COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an alarming concern with the monkeypox (mpox) outbreak, which has affected more than 110 countries worldwide. Monkeypox virus is a doublestranded DNA virus of the genus Orthopox of the Poxviridae family, which causes this zoonotic disease. Recently, the mpox outbreak was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). Monkeypox patients can present with ophthalmic manifestation and ophthalmologists have a role to play in managing this rare entity. Apart from causing systemic involv

Since its discovery in 1958, the orthopox monkeypox virus, a cause for mpox, has remained endemic in the African continent. Recently, a major epidemiological change in mpox virology is causing a global emergence. This review focuses on the novel mpox clades and explores transmission methods which are critical for public health measures and infection prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Mpox is a viral disease caused by monkeypox, a highly contagious orthopoxvirus that resulted in a global outbreak beginning in spring 2022. Diagnosis is confirmed via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of swabs from mucocutaneous lesions. Rare reports have documented the histologic changes of mpox lesions, but the cytologic features have not been described. We present the cytology findings of samples taken from swabs of mucocutaneous mpox lesions in 3 different patients.
METHODS: The patients were all male, aged 55, 43, and 37 years, all with mpox confirmed by PCR testing. Sw

Monkeypox virus (mpox), a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopox genus, can affect vulnerable anatomic sites, including the eyes, causing a monkeypox-related ophthalmic disease. The mpox virus may enter the eye via autoinoculation and cause multiple problems from mild lesions including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, to severe ones such as corneal ulcers, corneal scarring, and rarely loss of vision. The aim of this article is to aggregate from an ophthalmologic point of view what is presently known about mpox-related ophthalmic disease (mpoxROD) and to present a particular

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a virus that originally infected only animals. Caused by the monkeypox virus, this infection presents with symptoms similar to smallpox. Although two years have passed since the 2022 outbreak, new cases continue to emerge monthly. Initially, human cases of mpox were confined to outbreaks in central and western Africa. However, the virus has recently spread globally, possibly due to a decline in vaccination rates. In this context, evidence for effective therapies, such as antivirals, is urgently needed. Three antivirals-tecovirimat, brincidofovir, and cidofovir-are known to

The 2022 and 2024 monkeypox (mpox) outbreak highlighted the urgent need for effective, durable, and safe vaccines. In addition to the traditional smallpox vaccines that could bring cross-protection against mpox, mRNA and protein-subunit mpox vaccines were extensively studied after the outbreak of mpox. In this study, we engineered monkeypox virus (MPXV) nanoparticle vaccines by conjugating the M1R and A35R, two well-characterized protective antigens to the mi3 nanoparticle using the SpyTag-SpyCatcher system, generating mi3-M1R and mi3-A35R constructs. An equimolar mixture of mi3-M1R and mi3-A3

INTRODUCTION: Mpox (formerly monkeypox), caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), has historically been confined to parts of Central and West Africa. However, recent outbreaks in non-endemic regions (2022-2024) revealed efficient transmission within sexual networks and a broad range of cutaneous and mucosal presentations. The aim of this review is to summarize key aspects of Mpox, including its epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and public health strategies for outbreak control.

BACKGROUND: The reemergence of monkeypox virus (Mpox, formerly monkeypox) in 2022 in non-endemic countries has raised significant concerns for global health due to its high transmissibility and mortality rate. A major challenge in combating Mpox is its ability to evade the host's innate immune system, the first line of defense against viral infections.
SUMMARY: Mpox encodes various proteins that interfere with key antiviral pathways and mechanisms, such as the nuclear factor kappa B signaling, cytokine production, complement and inflammasome activation, and chemokine binding. These proteins m

BACKGROUND: The Monkeypox Virus (MPOX) has caused a surge in viral infections, leading to the WHO recognizing it as a public health emergency of international concern. MPOX infection shares clinical similarities with smallpox but can cause complications like myocarditis, anorectal pain, ocular lesions, kidney damage, or soft tissue superinfection. The study aims to understand the characteristics of myocarditis, fixed drug eruption, and dry eye syndrome in Monkeypox patients.
METHODS: This review was conducted based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)

Disease names that convey the location of discovery, the discovering scientists, the species of discovery, or the most impacted populations have been increasingly recognized as problematic-often leading to or amplifying xenophobia, disrepute, and stigma. In this context, in 2022 the World Health Organization proposed naming diseases after their causative pathogen or symptomatology instead. This recent guidance has been retrospectively applied to a disease at the center of an epidemic rife with intolerance and misinformation, predominantly affecting the already-stigmatized LGBTQ + community: mp

Mpox, also known as Monkeypox, is an infectious disease known to spread via direct contact and fomites, which poses a significant contagion risk in surgical settings and may increase the challenges already posed by COVID-19. Within the three years following the outbreak of Mpox, we conducted a review of the impact of Mpox on surgical practice. We searched Pubmed/Medline and Scopus, focusing on original studies and case reports in English or German. Our search terms included "Mpox", "Monkeypox", and "Surgery". Out of 60 clinical or epidemiological studies, as well as expert opinions, brief repo
