Mucocele of the hard palate in children.

OBJECTIVE: Mucus retention cyst of the hard palate may result from obstruction of the ducts of the minor salivary glands, and it was defined as a mucocele. Although, the disease is not common in the hard palate, it was previously reported by many authors in the soft palate. The aim of our study was to present pediatric patients who were diagnosed to have mucocele of the hard palate, and to evaluate the outcome of the surgical excision of this lesion. METHODS: This is a case series study included 8 pediatric patients who presented with cystic lesions on the hard palate which were removed surgi

The appropriate management of an appendiceal mucocele.

Appendicectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. Appendiceal mucocele is a relative rare disease, but appropriate management is critical. Indeed, the intact removal of a mucocele represents a curative treatment; conversely, a rupture may result in the spread of epithelial cells throughout the peritoneal cavity (pseudomyxoma peritonei). We report a case of a 61-year-old woman, admitted to our department, who underwent resection of an appendiceal mucocele, focusing, in the discussion, on the clinical and surgical management of this disease.

Laparoscopic appendectomy for mucocele of the appendix.

Mucocele of the appendix is an aseptic dilatation secondary to obstruction. The preoperative clinical diagnosis of appendiceal mucoceles can therefore be difficult because of this lack of clinical symptomotology. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice in benign mucocele. We report a case presenting to the surgeons where initial clinical findings and investigations suggested a cyst in the right adnexa. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed mucocele of the appendix and laparoscopic appendicectomy was done.

[Ophthalmic complications of nasosinus mucoceles].

INTRODUCTION: A nasosinus mucocele is a pseudocystic process filled with mucus arising within the sinus. Despite its benign histology, potential ophthalimic risks are related to mass effect and expansion to the orbit by bone destruction with compression of optic nerves. PURPOSE: We describe mechanisms of ophthalimic involvement in patients with paranasal sinus mucoceles, radiological appearance, treatment and prognosis of this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report 5 cases of paranasal sinus mucocele with ophthalmic complications seen between January 2007 and December 2011 on the ENT and

[Intracranial mucocele of the frontal sinus].

We discuss a case of 49-year-old man admitted to our Department with headache and tumor of frontal region since 3 months. We report clinical features and imaging data of mucocele of frontal sinus that penetrates into cranial cavity. The mucocele had damaged anterior and posterior walls of frontal sinus with intracranial penetration. There was intact dura of anterior fosse. External approach with coronal incision was performed, mucocele was evacuated and mucosa was removed. Then frontal sinus was cranialized with reconstruction of anterior wall and finally wide nasal drainage was performed. Int

Cecal volvulus and mucocele of the appendix.

We report the case of a 75-year-old woman who presented the association of a cecal volvulus with an appendiceal mucocele. A laparotomy showed these two findings and a right hemicolectomy with an end-to-end ileo-transverse colonic anastomosis was done. The role of plain radiograph and computerized tomographic imaging in the diagnosis of this entity is discussed To our knowledge, this association has not been reported in the literature.

A case of a mucocele in an Onodi cell.

Onodi cells have been defined as posterior ethmoid cells that have pneumatized laterally and superiorly to the sphenoid sinus. They are often close to the optic nerve or the internal carotid artery. A patient complained of a sudden decrease in left eye visual acuity and left eye pain due to formation of a primary mucocele in an Onodi cell. A coronal computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging were useful for diagnosing the mucocele.

Mucocele-like tumour of the breast.

Mucocele-like (ML) lesions of the breast are rare tumours and were reported as benign lesions that histologically resembled colloid carcinoma of the breast when first described about sixteen years ago. Only subsequent reports identified ML lesions associated with ductal hyperplasia or carcinoma. The Authors report an additional case of ML tumour of the breast and review the available medical literature. A young asymptomatic woman, without family history of breast cancer, presented with a palpable breast mass. As the radiological aspect was not typical of a simple cyst, the patient underwent a

Fungal mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that fungal mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus do not necessarily require an external approach for eradication of disease. We report 6 cases of fungal mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus seen at UCLA Medical Center from 1980-1999, 4 of which were successfully treated with endoscopic intranasal sphenoidotomy and the other 2 through either a transseptal or transantral approach. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Case series. The medical records of 6 patients with fungal mucoceles of the sphenoid sinus treated at UCLA Medical Center over a 20-year period (

[Ileocecal invagination of a mucocele of the appendix].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 39-year-old patient was admitted because of pain in the right mid and lower abdomen of 2 weeks duration with vomiting and postprandial nausea. He complained of changing stool habits with diarrhoea and constipation. Clinically he showed a slight tenderness in the right lower abdomen. INVESTIGATIONS: Routine laboratory test were normal including CRP and WBC. Ultrasound showed a non-compressible mass with low intensity echoes, 3.6 x 4.6 cm in diameter in the right mid abdomen, slightly tender, surrounded by a circular, intestine-like structure. A gastrografin-swa

[Intracranial mucocele. Report of a case].

Mucocele, usually associated to paranasal sinuses is defined as an abnormal accumulation and retention of mucous secretions. It usually presents with intraorbital or paranasal and rarely with pure neurological symptoms. We report a 41 years old male who presented with a history of supraorbital left headache, diplopia and proptosis. CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging showed an expansive mass in the right frontal sinus. The patient was operated, the presumptive preoperative clinical diagnosis of mucocele was confirmed and the lesion was drained. A postoperative CT scan confirmed the normal

Isolated mucocele in an Onodi cell.

A rare case of retrobulbar optic neuropathy caused by an isolated mucocele in an Onodi cell is presented. A 63-year-old man suffering from left recurrent optic neuropathy had shown improved visual acuity with steroid treatment at the age of 48 and 56 years. Impaired visual acuity and blurred vision in the left eye appeared again, and a marked inferior decrease in the left visual field was noted. Although axial computed tomography (CT) showed no abnormal findings, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a small squamous-shaped lesion (17 x 17 x 7.3 mm) in the left posterior ethmoidal air cell

Double mucocele of the paranasal sinuses.

We have observed two contiguous mucoceles in one patient. Based on the mucoceles' signal intensities on MR imaging, as well as their anatomic location as delineated by CT and MR, we hypothesize that the "downstream" mucocele obstructed the "upstream" sinus, leading to formation of a secondary mucocele.

The mucoceles or pyoceles of the paranasal sinuses.

Fifty-five mucopyoceles in 53 patients were diagnosed during the 10-year period from 1982 to 1992 in our department. These included 8 from the frontal sinus, 25 from the maxillary sinus, 10 from the ethmoidal sinus, 1 from the maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses, 7 from the frontoethmoidal sinuses and 4 from the sphenoethmoidal sinuses. The patients ranged in age from 8 to 78 years (mean 47.1 years). The ratio of males to females was 31 to 22. The rhinologic symptoms occurred most often in maxillary mucopyoceles and were rare in the other groups whereas ophthalmic symptoms were noticed in most of
