Background and objectives: Oral mucositis is one of the main adverse events of cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It presents as erythema, atrophy or/and ulceration of oral mucosa. It occurs in almost all patients, who receive radiation therapy of the head and neck area and from 20% to 80% of patients who receive chemotherapy. There are few clinical trials in the literature proving any kind of treatment or prevention methods to be effective. Therefore, the aim of this study is to perform systematic review of literature and examine the most effective treatment and preventi

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is an autoimmune condition characterised by erythematous target lesions on the skin with involvement of the oral and genital mucosa and conjunctivae. Recent case reports describe incomplete presentations with absence of the characteristic skin changes. This is caused by extrapulmonary manifestations of Mycoplasma pneumoniae lung infection and is now recognised as M. pneumoniae-associated mucositis (MPAM). This case report describes the clinical presentation of MPAM in a 17-year-old girl and highlights the importance of the recognition and the appropriate clinical manag

Objective: To evaluate the use of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM-T) in patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and affected by oral mucositis (OM). Background: Few clinical studies have evaluated PBM-T, particularly in combination with photodynamic therapy (PDT), for the treatment of OM. Methods: Thirty-one patients were divided by convenience into two groups. One received PBM-T (n = 17) alone, consisting of low-intensity laser (LIL) irradiation (wavelength 660 nm, continuous mode, spot energy 4 J, energy density 142 J/cm2, irradiation time 40 s per spot), once weekly for 4 weeks

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a common, dose-limiting early side effect of radio(chemo)therapy for head-and-neck tumors. The epithelial radiation response is accompanied by changes in the inflammatory signaling cascades mediated by the transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB). The present study was initiated to determine the effect of the NF-κB inhibitor thalidomide on the clinical manifestation of oral mucositis in the established mouse tongue model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment protocols comprised single dose irradiation and daily fractionated irradiation (5 fractions of 3 Gy/w

Therapies proposed for the treatment of peri-implant diseases are primarily based on the evidence available from treating periodontitis. The primary objective is elimination of the biofilm from the implant surface, and nonsurgical therapy is a commonly used treatment. A number of adjunctive therapies have been introduced to overcome accessibility problems or difficulties with decontamination of implant surfaces as a result of specific surface characteristics. It is now accepted that following successful decontamination, clinicians can attempt to regenerate the bone that was lost as a result of

Oral mucositis is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy). It is an inflammatory process that affects the mucosa of the oral cavity, giving rise to erythematous areas in combination with ulcers that can reach a large size. The true importance of oral mucositis is the complications it causes - fundamentally intense pain associated to the oral ulcers, and the risk of overinfection. This in turn may require reduction or even suspension of the antineoplastic treatment, with the risk of seriously worsening the patient prognosis. This points to the

Oral mucositis is a condition that is characterized by ulcerative lesions in the mucosa of patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Oral mucositis is currently considered to be the most severe complication of anticancer therapy, affecting 40-80% of patients undergoing chemotherapy and almost all those undergoing radiotherapy of the head and neck. Although they do not prevent lesions from appearing, drugs for the treatment of oral mucositis are required to minimize its clinical aggressiveness and improve the nutritional status, hydration and quality of life of the affected patients. INTRODUCTION: Mucositis induced by anti-neoplastic drugs is an important, dose-limiting and costly side-effect of cancer therapy.
AIM: To evaluate the effect of the topical application of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), a nitric oxide donor, on 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced oral mucositis in hamsters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Oral mucositis was induced in male hamsters by two intraperitoneal administrations of 5-FU on the first and second days of the experiment (60 and 40 mg/kg, respectively) followed by mechanical trauma on the fourth day. Animals received saline, HPMC or HPMC/GSNO (0.1, 0.5 or

PURPOSE: Current strategies for preventing and managing radiation-induced dermatitis, mucositis, and xerostomia are reviewed, with an emphasis on pharmacologic interventions.
SUMMARY: Nearly two thirds of all patients with cancer receive radiation therapy during the course of treatment, frequently resulting in acute skin and mucosal toxicities. The severity of radiotherapy-associated toxicities varies according to multiple treatment- and patient-related factors (e.g., total radiation dose and dose fractionation schedule, volume of organ or tissue irradiated, use of concurrent versus sequentia

Oral mucositis is a debilitating complication of anticancer treatment, characterised by erythematous, atrophic, erosive or ulcerative lesions. Oral mucositis is almost always painful, affects eating, sleeping, and speech and affects the physiological and social well-being of the patient. The pathophysiology of the condition is not well understood. Guidelines to the treatment of oral mucositis are often contradictory so that there is no evidence based standard treatment protocol. Therefore the treatment is empiric. This paper offers a brief review of current knowledge of the pathophysiology and

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to examine the construct validity of the Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale (OMAS) in children receiving doxorubicin chemotherapy.
METHODS: Children between 6 and 18 years of age with cancer receiving doxorubicin-containing chemotherapy were included. OMAS was measured on days 7, 10, 14, and 17 after chemotherapy. Other measures of mucositis obtained concurrent with OMAS were the World Health Organization (WHO) mucositis scale and pain visual analogue scale (VAS). We also recorded analgesia administration.
RESULTS: Sixteen children were studied for 45 post-chemothe

Mucositis pain is a major clinical problem associated with cancer treatment. Mucosal tissue injury is a dose-limiting side effect and also limits nutritional intake and oral function, resulting in weight loss and nutritional deficits for many patients. The pathophysiology of mucositis is thought to be a complex array of cytokine-mediated events, which begins with mucosal atrophy and eventually leads to the painful ulceration of the mucosa. This article reviews current research related to pain management for mucositis. Effective treatment for mucositis pain must be targeted at the various facto

PURPOSE: A new non-toxic drug (compound A) consisting of curcumin, alpha-tocopherol and sunflower oil was developed and its efficacy tested in the treatment of radiation-induced oral mucositis in the rat.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mature (12 weeks old, 200-225 g) female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. While under general anaesthesia, the tongues of the animals were slightly extended outside and a region of the underside of the tongue was irradiated in-situ with single doses of 2.27 MeV beta-rays from a 5-mm diameter 90Sr/90Y plaque. The dose-rate of the source was about 10 Gy min(-1) at the surfac

In an open study, the efficacy of povidone-iodine in the prophylaxis of mucositis during antineoplastic radiochemotherapy was determined. 40 patients were randomly assigned to a treatment or control group (each 20 patients). All patients received standard prophylaxis of mucositis with nystatin, dexpanthenol, rutoside and immunoglobulin. In addition, the patients of the treatment group performed 4 times daily rinsing with povidone-iodine, the control patients with sterile water. Clinical examination of the oral mucosa was performed weekly during the radiation period and up to 6 weeks after the

Four children developed mycotic cervical lymphadenitis while receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy for acute leukemia. Neutropenia, oral mucositis, and broad-spectrum antibiotic administration preceded the appearance of lymphadenitis in each case. Enlarged tender cervical lymph nodes of mycotic origin were not clinically distinguishable from lymphadenitis of bacterial or viral origin. Although cervical lymphadenitis was the initial clinical manifestation of deep fungal infection, computerized tomography of the chest and abdomen subsequently demonstrated asymptomatic pulmonic, splenic, or hepatic le
