A return to the environment in epidemiology: multilevel analysis of diabetes mellitus in a large urban agglomeration of Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of disease due to diabetes mellitus has shown an increasing trend worldwide. Given the potential of physical structures to create opportunities for the adoption of individual behaviors, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between neighborhood food environments and green spaces and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the Mar del Plata-Batán urban agglomeration in Argentina, while also considering individual characteristics, from 2013 to 2018. METHODS: A cross-sectional design with a multilevel approach was used. Individual data from the National Risk Factor Su

A multilevel analysis of mortality and determinants among patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome in Ethiopia.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a heterogeneous syndrome with substantial morbidity and mortality globally. Body of evidence revealed that the epidemiologic estimates are currently disproportional due to differences in patient populations, risk factors, resources, and practice protocols around the world, and the rate of mortality and its predictors are uncertain in Ethiopia. A multi-centre retrospective cohort study was conducted in Ethiopia from January 2018 to June 2023. After receiving ethical clearance from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Dilla University College of H

The relationship between emotional intelligence and resilience in healthcare practitioners and students: a multilevel meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare practitioners operate in high-pressure environments characterized by complex interpersonal dynamics, making emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience critical competencies. This meta-analysis systematically examines the association between EI and resilience among healthcare practitioners and explores potential moderating factors. METHODS: A comprehensive search of six databases (ERIC, Web of Science, Medline, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Scopus) was conducted through September 2024. The analysis incorporated data from 34 studies involving 8,515 participants, yielding 90 effect

A longitudinal multilevel analysis of individual- and contextual-level predictors of cross-ethnic friendships in the UK.

Intergroup contact plays a central role in fostering positive intergroup attitudes; yet, factors promoting intergroup contact are less understood. Using three waves of data from a nationally representative UK household panel study (N = 18,807), we applied longitudinal multilevel models to examine how individual- and objective neighbourhood-level indicators jointly predict cross-ethnic friendships. At the individual level, higher openness and agreeableness, stronger neighbourhood belonging and a left-leaning political orientation were associated with more cross-ethnic friendships. At the contex

A multilevel analysis of the predictive effects of internal migration and region of residence on women's empowerment in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing research interest on the influences of migration and regions of residence on human behaviors, studies on the influences of migration and region of residence on women empowerment especially in sub-Saharan Africa are lacking. Thus, this study investigated migration status and region of residence as correlates of women empowerment in Nigeria. METHODS: The study utilized data of 37,762 women aged 15-49 years from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The outcome variables were indices of household decision making, financial decision-making, sexual right, expe

The relationship between self-reported interoception and depression: A systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research highlights interoceptive dysfunction as a potential mechanism underlying depression. Whereas physiological measures of interoception (e.g., cardiac accuracy tasks) have shown inconsistent associations with depression, subjective self-report measures may provide greater insight. However, no previous meta-analysis has synthesised evidence on self-reported interoception and depression. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science identified 49 studies (N = 21,755) meeting our inclusion criteria. A three-level meta-an

Electroconvulsive therapy in Germany: a nationwide multilevel analysis of determinants, regional patterns, and institutional variation.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for severe psychiatric disorders, yet its use may be shaped not only by clinical need but also by structural and institutional factors. Using nationwide 2023 administrative data from the German psychiatric prospective payment system (PEPP), we examined whether regional ECT utilization corresponded to regional diagnostic burden and assessed patient-, institutional-, and regional-level factors associated with receiving ECT. The analysis included 837,762 inpatient psychiatric discharges; in addition, descriptive information on day hospital

The association between childhood maltreatment and drug use: A systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis.

While there is evidence that childhood maltreatment (CM) is positively associated with drug use (DU), the strength and difference of the association between CM and its subtypes (hereafter CM + ST) and DU remains to be further explored. A multilevel meta-analysis was conducted on 101 independent studies reporting 333 effect sizes (N = 132,341; Mage = 24.65; 43.80%males). Results showed significantly positive correlations between CM + ST and DU (range from 0.109 to 0.185). The results of the subgroup analysis revealed notable disparities in the correlations between distinct CM subtypes and DU (F
