The effect of structured checklist-assisted multimedia interactive education on postoperative pain management and quality of life in patients with lower extremity varicose veins: a randomized controlled trial with 1-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Lower extremity varicose veins (LEVV) are common chronic venous disorders. Adherence to perioperative self-care plays a vital role in managing postoperative pain and enhancing long-term quality of life (QoL). Traditional health education models often struggle with issues such as incomplete information and high cognitive load. METHODS: This study utilized a single-blind, randomized controlled trial design. LEVV patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group [checklist-enhanced multimedia interactive education (CE-MIE), n = 96] or a control group [multimedia interact

Quest to identify geochemical risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in an endemic region of Sri Lanka-a multimedia laboratory analysis of biological, food, and environmental samples.

The emergence of a new form of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka's North Central Province (NCP) has become a catastrophic health crisis. CKDu is characterized as slowly progressing, irreversible, and asymptomatic until late stages and, importantly, not attributed to diabetes, hypertension, or other known risk factors. It is postulated that the etiology of CKDu is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, nutritional and dehydration status, exposure to one or more environmental nephrotoxins, and lifestyle factors. The objective of this limited geochemical la

Web-based training for primary care providers on screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

This project evaluated a Web-based multimedia training for primary care providers in screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for unhealthy use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Physicians (n = 37), physician assistants (n = 35), and nurse practitioners (n = 20) were recruited nationally by email and randomly assigned to online access to either the multimedia training or comparable reading materials. At baseline, compared to non-physicians, physicians reported lower self-efficacy for counseling patients regarding substance use and doing so less frequently. All provi

Evaluating the effectiveness of reformulated extended-release oxycodone with abuse-deterrent properties on reducing non-oral abuse among individuals assessed for substance abuse treatment with the Addiction Severity Index-Multimedia Version (ASI-MV).

OBJECTIVE: Original brand extended-release (ER) oxycodone tablets (OC) for oral use were reformulated (ORF) with abuse-deterrent properties (ADP) against inhalation and injection routes in August 2010. This product transition provided an opportunity to compare "before and after" reformulation abuse trends. Our goal was to assess the change in abuse of brand oxycodone ER from before and after introduction of ORF. METHODS: Change in self-reported non-oral "OxyContin" abuse in the previous 30 days during two years pre- and four years post-reformulation was assessed among adults evaluated for sub

The evaluation of different information methods on behaviour and anxiety levels of children aged 6 to 9 years: a randomised controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the alteration of pre-post informing anxiety levels and behavioural scores of the children in the groups between those who were shown the multimedia-application and verbally explained. METHODS: In this randomized controlled study, healthy children, who applied to a paediatric-dental-clinic who never had a dental visit or dental procedure rather than oral examination were included. In the waiting room evaluation of children with a behaviour-control-list and Frankl's-Behaviour-Rating-Scale were performed, Venham-Picture-Test (VPT) was shown to the children. Then, the random

Single-item screening for agoraphobic symptoms: validation of a web-based audiovisual screening instrument.

The advent of web-based treatments for anxiety disorders creates a need for quick and valid online screening instruments, suitable for a range of social groups. This study validates a single-item multimedia screening instrument for agoraphobia, part of the Visual Screener for Common Mental Disorders (VS-CMD), and compares it with the text-based agoraphobia items of the PDSS-SR. The study concerned 85 subjects in an RCT of the effects of web-based therapy for panic symptoms. The VS-CMD item and items 4 and 5 of the PDSS-SR were validated by comparing scores to the outcomes of the CIDI diagnosti

Preconsultation education promoting breast cancer screening: does the choice of media make a difference?

BACKGROUND: Multimedia technology can be a valuable resource for health promotion and patient education initiatives because it allows messages to be presented within an environment that is both sensory-rich and interactive (i.e., the user can explore the information according to his or her particular needs and interests). Using clinic waiting time as an opportunity for breast cancer education, this investigation examined whether an educational intervention promoting breast cancer screening would be more effective when using interactive multimedia than when using written materials. METHODS: Ov

A systematic review of information format and timing before scheduled adult surgery for peri-operative anxiety.

We included 34 trials with 3742 participants, identified through 6 database and supplementary searches (to May 2017): 29 were randomised; 4 were quasi-randomised and 1 was cluster-randomised. Disparate measurements and outcomes precluded meta-analyses. Blinding was attempted in only 6 out of 34 (18%) trials. A multimedia format, alone or in combination with text or verbal formats, was studied in 20/34 (59%) trials: pre-operative anxiety was unaffected in 10 out of 14 trials and reduced by the multimedia format in three; postoperative anxiety was unaffected in four out of five trials in which f

Comparison of multi-media transport and transformation models: regional fugacity model vs. CalTOX.

Two multimedia environmental transport and transformation computer models are summarized and compared. The regional fugacity model published by Mackay and Paterson (1991), termed Fug3ONT, is a four compartment steady-state model designed to simulate the relative distribution of nonionic organic chemicals in a multimedia system. CalTOX is a seven compartment multimedia total exposure model for hazardous waste sites. Both models are based on the principles of fugacity. CalTOX, however, separates the soil into three layers (surface, root, and vadose) and uses a different approach to estimate the

The Design and Validation of a Child Developmental e-Screening System.

An effective screening test could significantly impact identification of developmental delays at an early age. However, many studies have shown that delay screenings still use text-based screening survey questionnaires. Unfortunately, the traditional text-based screening method tends to be fairly passive. In addition, the advantages of using an interactive system and animation have been shown to lead to positive effects on learning in medical research. Therefore, a multimedia screening system is necessary. This study constructs a system architecture to develop an e-screening system for child d

Future-proofing agricultural research: FAIR principles for agriculture AI agents (FAIR4AG2).

The rapid shift of large language models from conversational use to agentic reasoning is changing how scientific outputs must be structured for machine consumption. Agriculture stands to gain the most from this transition but currently has the least of the centralized, machine-ready infrastructure that biomedicine has built over decades. Agricultural knowledge remains dispersed across peer-reviewed journals, extension bulletins, technical reports, and multimedia field demonstrations, with associated code, data, and models often inaccessible to autonomous agents. We argue that the foundational
